Hell has frozen over... Star Wars saga coming to BR in 2011!!!

Lucas also clarified that the original trilogy movies will be included as they were shown theatrically in 1997 and released on DVD in 2004 - i.e., the original versions will not be included. "You have to go through and do a whole restoration on it, and you have to do that digitally," he said. "It's a very, very expensive process to do it. So when we did the transfer to digital, we only transferred really the upgraded version."

Well that's an easy not-buy. I'll wait until 2013 when he milks it again by releasing the real versions on Blu.

I know right? it's too bad a seamless branching can't be done...

The original films have already been restored/cleaned up a long time ago...just lucas wants everyone to except the SE release as the final and only workable release.

Cool deleted scene, but the original theatrical releases are what I'm after.

Not only do the special editions have a bunch of added crap, this release will probably be another grainless Lowry transfer like the last one.

Get Robert A. Harris and Criterion on the job. Some people are so desperate for a proper release of the original editions (that non-anamorphic DVNR'd add-on from 2006 doesn't count), that they're doing Laserdisc captures (some of which are better than said 2006 release) to pass the time...

P.S. I wonder if Jedi's sandstorm sequence will be revealed too...

If I want to watch the special editions in HD, those have already played on HD movie channels (DVR'd). I'll hold out for the classic edition Blurays. And hey, I don't mind that another, archival-level remaster is coming. The Blu-Ray releases of the classic editions need to be perfect, and I'm counting on the biggest collection of bonus features ever.
They need to go do Episode 7!!!
How about no.

Yea the Spike TV releases of the saga have looked pretty good (very good on a 58 inch 1080p plasma ). I am so betting that the HD masters were done a long time ago as a test bed to see if the market is ready for an HD release of the saga.

As for episode 7....my guess based on the Zahn trilogy correct? hmmm...maybe.

I am wondering how much this is gonna cost us? The 2004 OT trilogy dvd release cost like 40 I think.

I am also wondering if the guy who did the dvd menus is coming back to do the br release or they just porting over the stuff from the dvd menus of the 2004 OT release to br..

I really don't get the excitement of that lightsaber deleted scene. If lucas felt that was SOOOO important to ROTJ...then he would have included it in the 1997/2004 release.

I thought that deleted scene was pretty epic. While I really want these on blu ray, I'm not sure if I want drop the money for this first release.

So that probably means 2012-2013 until the movies can be individually purchased. That's too bad, but there's no way I'm paying money for the god-awful prequels.

He'd rather include stupid shit, like a halfhour podrace. The guy is a total embarrassment as a director. "No, we don't need to do another take, I can fix your poor line delivery with CGI." Literally, the guy does just one take, like Clint Eastwood. The difference is actors are scared of pissing off Clint Eastwood so they make sure they get it right.

American Graffiti was his only truly good movie. Back when he actually directed. Now he just milks one thing for all its worth, retroactively ruining it with each effort. Like the cringe-worthy sight gag of Han stepping on Jabba's tail. Turning a fearsome intergalactic crime lord into a fucking clown.

With all that said, yes, I'm a sucker. I'll buy it. Probably at any price.
i guess theyll finally add in that jaba raping leia scene as well as the jawa orgy......cant wait........
Jabba has to get past Chewie first.

Dude, Carrie Fisher was so hot. What happened?

Wait a minute...why exactly is this "hell freezing over," OP? Was there like, some sort of insurmountable doubt that Star Wars would ever be released on Blu-Ray? Now, if they were releasing the classic editions first, yeah, I would call that hell freezing over, but this was nothing short of inevitable. Just FYI, the phrase "when hell freezes over" means that something is unlikely.
Dude, Carrie Fisher was so hot. What happened?
She got old, like everyone else ever has/will, I suppose.

This is not a surprise OP the only mystery of the release was when not if.

George Lucas never created Star Wars. He merchandised it. Blu ray release was inevitable.
I will probably end up buying it... They need to go do Episode 7!!!
I hope this is some sick joke.
She lost it long ago though. Reportedly it was because she smoked and drank enough to make Keith Richards blush.

Is this some sort of really counter-intuitive metaphysical statement that I just am not understanding or what?

Oh, it's not just reportedly. She's said as much out of her own mouth, on countless occasions.

if they do another one the jedi will be gay and spend most of their time at raves swinging their lightsabers around like glow sticks. "use that force you filthy manimal"!!!
if they do another one the jedi will be gay and spend most of their time at raves swinging their lightsabers around like glow sticks. "use that force you filthy manimal"!!!
They already did that, didn't you see episode 2?

the ewoks are tapdancing all up inside my business right now eagerly awaiting the climax that is.... the release date of sheer perfection.

you know if lucas had any balls hed do a documentary and let all of the stars of his films speak candidly about what they went through doing them. i remeber hamill doing dinner for 5 and talking about how he had all these ideas for what he wanted to do in return of the jedi but lucas shot them down and later used them in the new star wars films.

super excited!!! On a separate note.... im half retarded/in the bag right now... where the hell do I change my profile pic again?? pm me if ya wanna help out.

Not re-mastering the originals because it is too expensive? Bullshit, How is it that classic movies like the Wizard of Oz, and Casablanca get great transfers to Blu Ray, but the worlds biggest movie franchise does not due to costs?

Oh well, at least the deleted scene was cool.

I'm sure that the Metropolis restoration cost way more than what one of the Star Wars theatrical releases ever could, and it'll sell a tiny fraction of what SW would.

Plus, George Lucas/Lucasfilm/20th Century Fox are loaded. There is no cost argument to be made.

Again, people are so desperate, they're using this instead of this to get what they want... :whistle2:(

He owns the studio and those guys get a paycheck no matter what project they are working on. The real truth is he has no plans to release the original cuts again. He sees them as "flawed."

Wow tough room. You guys really really really hate the new versions alot don't you? I actually don't hate the new versions since those are the ones I watch in the movie theater back in 97.

Maybe another reason I'm not full of nerd rage is because I only own two copies of the OT. One on VHS and the triple pack on dvd. I think its good news and if the features and price is right I might even pick it up day one.
I'm probably one of a handful of people that only cares about the prequel trilogy.
Did I read that right? Only the prequels?
Is this some sort of really counter-intuitive metaphysical statement that I just am not understanding or what?
A lot of his original ideas for the film were changed or scrubbed due to technical limitations, lack of funds, or straight up the artist or actors weren't doing it because it looked or sounded absurd.

Lucas merely created the concept. It was the people around him who created the great film.
This next one is called we hate you please die.
Actually, the next one should be called Star Wars 7: The Search For More Cash.

Thank God I gave up buying DVD's unless they're used and under $5 and I'm not this obsessed with some silly movie franchise.:D

I nearly puked when I saw the new, all CG musical number in Jabba's palace (RotJ). Lucas would have me believe that's how originally envisioned it. Yeah, right...
The real truth is he has no plans to release the original cuts again. He sees them as "flawed."
Come now. People said the same thing when the Special Edition DVDs came out, and just a couple years later, we got our classic editions (half-assed though they were).

You can't have it both ways, people. He can't be greedily trying to milk the franchise for every dime it's worth by any means possible, and also be completely unwilling to release a second set of Blu-Ray releases that would obviously sell like hotcakes with the fans.

The original theatrical versions of OT would be awesome but, I have gave up all hope of ever seeing those again (if that happens then hell truly has froze over). I'm tired of changes to the OT, those films are from late 70's early 80's and when you add new technology it just looks so strange it takes you out of the film.

Yea although cool..it was really out of place.

Honestly it would be nice if they have Fett actually escape the sarlac pit... fans would love that more than saber building scene...

Fett is a bad ass who deserves a better death than that.

I'm fine with it since it doesn't look out of place. Unfortunately, George never filmed that scene and I don't want a CGI one.

This should be no higher than $80-90 - given the volume that will be sold. If this approaches $100 or more, it'll be a shame.

The '97 Special Editions aren't too bad. The colours are a little oversaturated, and there is a bit much CGI, but all in all it's WAY better than the grainless ghost-replacing '04 editions...
Lucas merely created the concept. It was the people around him who created the great film.
Again, bingo.
Come now. People said the same thing when the Special Edition DVDs came out, and just a couple years later, we got our classic editions (half-assed though they were).
I'll clarify. He'll never put any money or effort into releasing the classic editions.
Wait...don't tell me you weren't making a reference to Spaceballs?
Yea... even I caught on to it.. and the Yogurt...

I'm still waiting on a proper Spaceballs sequel, not that shitty cartoon.
