So, I've been saving my pennies for a last few months, and after Christmas i'm going to finally get an hdtv. Problem is i'm having trouble deciding on one. I was pretty set with getting the Panasonic 42 inch plasma they had at best buy for $899, but alas, it isn't on the website anymore. Anyway heres what i'm looking for.

-around 42 inches, (i don't think my tv stand can accomodate more than 42, but my couch is a fair distance away so i need something fairly big.)

-Around $1000 (give or take 200 or so)

-At least 2 component inputs, and at least 1 hdmi.

-Don't care about speakers as i have a surround setup.

I'm going to be using this primarily for gaming (360/wii/ps2) and watching movies.

I'm not adverse to getting a 720p tv, as i realize that's what's reasonable in my price range, and from what i've looked at on tv's i've seen, at 42 inches, i couldn't see a HUGE difference between 720/1080. Also, i'd rather get a quality 720 set than a mediocre 1080 one.

LCD/Plasma/DLP? i don't really care, as long as it doesn't effect my gaming experience, i play guitar hero a lot, and i don't want a tv with a noticable delay. In general, i've been more impressed with plasma pictures in general from what i've seen so i've been leaning towards those.

Shipping is an issue for me, i get home from work after 8 or 9 every night, and i live in an apartment complex and have had a large expensive package stolen from outside my door. So i'd rather do an in store pickup or a scheduled white glove delivery.

Anyway, i'm just looking for some suggestions, any advice would be much appreciated, thanks!

There are plenty of 1080p 42inch TVs out there for around your price. Look @ contrast ratio aswell... But to be honest, if you can wait.. wait. You're gonna be seeing a 20-35% price drop in 1080p TVs in the coming months (prolly 3-6.) As the technology becomes easier to manufacture, the cost is driven down by alot of value companies, like Vizio and Westinghouse. I I have a 32inch 720p 1k Contrast... looking @ a 1080p LG 42inch LCD the other day with 6k contract... BLOWS my TV away, and the picture on my TV is actually very good. Thankfully, the GF is buying the 42inch 1080p... Ill stick with my $550 32inch for right now. Every once in a while you can see 1080p TVs in that size for around 1k. Im gonna wait till I can get one for about $700 and put my TV on the wall in the crapper.

Contrast ratios mean nothing...do not look at those ratings.

Plasma...if you game all the time, well you risk more IR than an LCD or DLP/LCoS, but burn in is supposed to be a thing of the past.

I'm not a fan of LCD's at all due to motion blurring due to poor response times.

DLP, they need lamp changes unless you go with the new LED based sets.

I'm not recommending any single tv, but keep shopping around until the perfect sale hits.

I got my Samsung 56" DLP new for around $1,150. Try and find it anywhere else now for under $1,600.

yeah, i'm probably just going to wait for a decent sale. probably right before Super Bowl time they'll have some deals.

I've just got this money burning a hole in my pocket... :)

what do you mean by IR?

I have been leaning towards plasma mostly because of the blurring i've noticed on a lot of tvs.

Actually on clearence for $799. And if you get the floor model they will discount 30%. For a total of $560.

You might also wait after the Super Bowl for discounts on last years models.[/QUOTE]

I've been really happy with my Olevia, which I've had for about a year now. I bought an upconverting Samsung dvd player, and I couldn't be happier with the performance. Once I get my 360 on Tuesday, I'll let you know how that works, too :D
