Help on what to do with a 60 GB 360 gift for my nephew.

So...let's premise this by saying something that hardly has anything to do with the story...my brother is a dick and his ex-girlfriend is a bitch. Their kid is like my kid and he's 12 years old (I'm 26). For Christmas this year, I'm getting him a 360 with a few games. I bought him the $300 60 gb holiday bundle at Amazon that comes with the free points card and Lego Batman on top of the Kung Fu Panda and Lego Indiana Jones. I've gotten my mother to pitch in a little, my girlfriend to pitch in a little and his mother (my brother's ex) to pitch in a little. I'm also getting him a router and a 12 month subscription to live. So all in all, we'll be paying $400 for him and I'll have paid a little more than $200.

Here lies my questions: I only have a 20 gb harddrive with about a gig left. I'm wondering if I should just give him my 360 that I've had for two years and me keep the new one or if I should trade the harddrives with him as part of a stipulant....or just do nothing. I'm already most likely going to keep the 1600 Point card. I may sell the Lego Batman to ease some of the pain of the costs (he doesn't really have interest in these kinds of games, he's much more into adult games...don't give me shit for it...believe it or not, he knows right from wrong much more than most adults that I know).

I have no reason to feel bad about it because he'll probably never have any use for even 20 gb, let alone 60. I just feel a tiny bit wrong for it and wanna see if anyone else would or wouldn't do similar.

PS: I'm not sure where this should go...it's video-game related, so I wasn't sure about OFF-TOPIC. I consider it a shopping discussion, since I'm shopping for my nephew.
I think it sounds reasonable. Go for it!

If I was the kid I think the 360 itself would just be badass!
QFT. Holidays consist of a system and if your lucky one decent game, and one terribad game.

request a transfer kit, transfer your HDD to the 60gb, and give him the new system with the 20GB. Let the kid have the new system.

Also later on you can sell the transfer kit for some money

Sounds like the best plan for me. Couple questions though. I'm new at this transfer kit thing...how do I request one? Am I eligible for the free one or whatever? And if so, what all do I need for the free one eligibility? Also, you don't send in the harddrive when you send in your 360 for repairs, right? 'Cause I'd hate something to go wrong with my 360 or his and me or him having to ask the other for the harddrive back to send away with the console for repairs...leaving both of us out of a 360 temporarily.

Yea it is free. Here is the request form.

If you need to send it for repair you keep the HDD

If you request a transfer kit, you should get it in a week or two tops. If recent events are any indicator, you'll probably even get two.

Your nephew is going to be stoked.

If you don't want to wait for a transfer kit, you could just redownload everything. My friend got a new hard drive and he didn't seem to have any license probs. Some saves are stupid and don't transfer though.

If you told the others that you had bought all that for the kid, then go and keep or sell some of it for yourself, you'll look like a dick to them. Regardless, if you give him a new 360 Pro, it better have the 60GB drive on it, or you'll look like a dick to the kid.

How would that make him look like a dick? Any kid would be happy as hell to get an xbox 360 let alone one with a HDD. Up until recently the pro came with a 20GB HDD so swapping the HDD's isnt a very big deal. Getting your nephew a 360 is awesome and I applaud you in taking all the time, effort, and money to get this for him. I hope he enjoys his xbox and hope you two get to play some games online together.

Yeah, he's not even the father so that's pretty awesome. If the kid isn't going to use the 60GB then might as well. The only thing I can see is when it says 60GB on the box and since hes getting help with paying for it the parents might complain but seriously, I'd be happy if I was a 12 year old.

Here is how I see it and maybe if I explained it more in depth, your view on it might change...I don't know. I'm footing the majority of the bill by far. It was completely my idea to get it for him. I know he has wanted it for a long time. His living situation sucks because his mom is an alcoholic, his live-in uncle is an alcoholic-druggie and his older sister (16 yr old half-sister, not really related to me, but that doesn't make a difference to me, she's my niece) is already going down the wrong path because of this. There are plenty more negatives in his life, but somehow he has managed to push everything away and be the coolest, most grown up and understanding 12 year old in the world. He looks up to me like I'm a god and always has (for some reason). Any positive influence that I can continue to hold onto throughout the next long and hard years of growing up under peer pressure will be well worth any price to me. Take all of that in and decipher how bad things could turn out for him in the future. All of that said, I'm a struggling college student and am going above and beyond for him with this gift. If it wasn't for me, the gift wouldn't even be close to happening. So anything that I can do to make it happen and make it more reasonable in my slim wallet's eyes, is a huge plus. I actually just got the 360 in the mail today from Amazon. I will be throwing the Lego Batman up on ebay to foot some of the bill. My nephew barely understands what the HDD is when it comes to games (much like myself before I bought my 360 a few years ago), let alone know which HDD comes with what and blah blah blah. I'm not going to make a sneaky swap without telling him. I'll tell him that the only stipulation in you getting this huge present is by swapping out the hard drives with me...I doubt he'll throw up any sign of anger towards me on that. He'll know that I'm a huge gamer and if the 20 GB HDD was good enough for me for the past few years, he'll have no problem with it. I could easily just by him the arcade and a memory card and he'd be happy as hell, but I refuse to support that arcade console.

Looks like I've already made up my mind lol. I was never really worried about anyone thinking I was a dick for doing it. I was just worried about my self-conscious and wondering if it was a wrong thing to do. The huge support in this thread has helped me out.

Thanks everyone.
Clean up your old system and switch them in the box. He won't know the difference.
lol...thought about it at first, but not with people pitching in...I can't go that far lol...that said, out of the people pitching in: my mom & girlfriend say switch the harddrives and my nephew's mom...well, I can't even guarantee I'll see that money

PS: Thanks PhreQuency

Considering others pitched in for the system you should keep intact and give to him including the batman game. If you had payed for it yourself then do what you wish.
Keep the points, ask him to swap hdd after given to him, maybe he will be cool with that.
