So, right now I have my pc and my video game console area separate. However, I'd like to run fighting game emulators on my big screen where my video game consoles are. I have an older pc with a 9800 Pro with DVI and VGA out. My television across the room has vga, hdmi, and component in. Now, in theory, I could just run vga straight to the television, right? But my Xbox 360 currently occupies the VGA input. And, my pc monitor is currently using the vga output on the pc.

So, if the 9800 pro puts out a picture via VGA and DVI at the same time (as I read that it does) and I use a DVI to VGA dongle, now I have solved my problem of getting video out of the pc, right? How about my input problem of the television? Do they make a KVM-style device that just switches between VGA and audio only?

Does this make any sense? This all just came to me since I ordered a fighting stick for the 360 that happens to be XP compatible. I'd love to play Street Fighter, King of Fighters, etc. on the big screen.

Is there any reason why you're not using the component cables for your Xbox 360? I had this EXACT dilemma you're having; I had 360 hooked up via VGA to the TV and I wanted to hook up my PC to the TV. So I bought one of these DVI to HDMI cable thinking that my problem is solved. Little did I know is I experienced a minor video lag from my keyboard and mouse (rendering it very difficult to play intense FPS) when my computer is hooked up to the TV with that cable. So I gave up VGA on the 360 and used component and left the VGA port on the TV for the computer.

You might be looking for that cable for easy solution, or give up VGA on the TV and move the 360 to component cable.

From what I am reading, are you wondering how to get audio from the computer to your tv?

Well, I was trying to get audio and video in the most simple way possible.

Also, my 360 was using VGA because I was using it as an upscaling DVD player as well. It will not upscale over component. However, I forgot I traded my launch 360 in for an HDMI-equipped 360 last December.
So, I'll switch the 360 over to HDMI and that leaves me the VGA free for the pc. As far as audio goes, I do have an extra stereo 3.5mm lineout being used by a headset. I'll just scrap the headset (as I don't use it) and use that out to get sound to the tv. I'm also running a long usb cable behind the television as well to plug it an arcade stick.

And, apparently, that 9800 Pro (like most cards) does output two video sources with two different resolutions.

So, my only question left is....

Will a 15' USB cable and a 15' VGA cable cause lag between the television and the pc? Because I'm mainly doing this for 2D fighting games and those are damn quick.

I believe they made component adapters that worked with a 9800 Pro. I bought one for a 9500 and it works well. It might also be better for you because some (most) HDTV's have lower resolution over VGA than over component...
So just to clarify, the primary problem you have is the distance? Around 15 ft, right?
Yeah, pretty much. I initially didn't know an easy way to get the pc to the television but that has since been resolved. Now I'm just hesitant that there may be some lag while playing games. Right now the pc is less than 10' from the television, but I may move it later and wanted longer cables just in case.

15 ft will be fine, just use one cable straight from PC to TV, no switch box or input selector. 15 ft USB cable will also be fine for your joystick.
