I was wondering if you guys could help me find a topic for my research paper. I was thinking It could have something to do with video games or the video game industry. Any suggestions?

How about any connection between those that play video games and laziness regarding school work (i.e. asking for "help" in on-line forums, asking for research paper topics, etc.).

Actually, I even found one real-life example of this. I imagine you can use it as a source for your paper. Check it out.

You should see if playing video games has an impact on a person's income. Shit should be easy if you find the right data set - SPSS is your friend.

SPSS is draconian, though I still use it. Stata's the new shit. Where will you find data on gameplay and income? The GSS?

OP, what subject is this for?

If you want to toy around with data (sales numbers), perhaps comparing and contrasting the changes in Western/Eastern gaming habits over the past 5-10 years might be worth exploring. Stuff like Gears, Halo, Fallout, Oblivion, CoD, Guitar Hero - all the rage here, but sell like garbage in Japan.

You could do something along the lines of how surgeons who play video games have a higher success rate of surgeries since surgeries such as laparoscopic typically use controller type method of controlling the tools.

You should do it on the tendency for gamers to spend more time sitting on a forum talking about video games then actually playing them (which is my problem)

Lol thanks guys these are all good ideas!

Do you think I could get an interview from Wombat or Cheapy, or both?

How would I go about asking them?

does bull shit count? in video games, there are going to be many biases and is why i ask if bull shit counts. if you had to end up describing the casual gamer, are you going to label them as retards as compared to a hardcore gamer? of course technically, you wouldn't directly say a casual gamer is a retard, but you'd probably say they have the lack of ... and give a reason that is based on your reasoning. of course you can offer sources to back your reasoning but are those sources from reliable sources of which party. so if bull shit counts, then it's okay to do a topic on video games, if not then try to avoid it.

if you really want a hard one, explain how 2d and 3d gaming is very different, and i'm not talking in terms of graphics, i'm talking about the gameplay. 2d concept games don't particularly work that good with 3d games, why?

Lol. You could do something on building a company on the gaming industry and what it takes to do so. Then an interview with Cheapy or Wombat would be great!

Yeah just an email interview would be great! But I cant find their press secretaries..

I did a research paper on violence in games and it's effects on those who play them. I found a ton of articles from Kotaku (used their sources) on good examples of real-life violence AND video games. There's also a really good study and interview posted in one of the CAGcasts that I used for my paper...I can't remember which cast it was though, it's been 2 years since I wrote it.

Why not do a history of Video Games in genral. Focus on the the Video Game inustry's trancedance from a few guys working in their spare time at home, to one of the largest Media Industries in the world.

I wrote a 15 page paper for my Persuasion class on how Nintendo turned the gaming industry around after the crash of '83. Got the only A in the class on it.
