Hey there,
I'm Christmas shopping for my Dad. I've known for a while he's wanted "Beats by Dre" headphones, but based on what I've read, they're overpriced and not even the best headphones around. So it seems from both a quality and cost perspective, I could do better. Does anyone have a suggestion for high end headphones I should consider?

I've come across these. and they seem to be pretty solid.

I second Sennheiser's they're awesome and (at least the old ones) are semi-modular, so if something breaks/rips/tears you can buy the replacement part(s) and fix it yourself.

ATH-M50s sounds great, although you can save money by buying the straight cabled version (M50S - same headphone, but "S" stands for straight cable)

They are currently out of stock by amazon (selling for $115) so if you need it by Christmas it might not be reliable.

Here's an in depth look into several cans under $200 that you might be interested:

The general consensus on Beats headphones is that they are extremely overpriced and that the only real quality Beats can is the Studios (which is still severely overpriced).

One thing to keep in mind is that some expensive headphones really need amps to get the most out of them.

Thanks guys-- antlp89, I saw that too. I did place an order-- hopefully Amazon pulls off a miracle and gets stock in soon. So I've got that in place while I investigate other options-- I may just go through one of the vendors selling them. They're still cheaper than the coiled version.

Can you explain about the more expensive headphones needing amps?

After doing quite a bit of research I just picked up a set of Klipsch Image One's...Sound better than any other high quality cans I've tested out and cheaper as well.

Op, what is your budget? I'll sell you my Sennheiser HD650 for $300.

I'm currently using the Denon D7000
