No, this isn't a story. Sorry

But I was wondering if someone could provide me with some info. I am pretty certain that currently Philadelphia has the highest murder rate in the country. However, isn't it on a level of "Highest murder rate among large cities"? Compared to cities such as New York, Los Angeles, Chicaco, etc

What about the smaller cities? And what about overall murder rate? See my friend was saying Camden, NJ was the worst overall..and I don't think it IS. But I could easily be wrong. I'm just looking for that info and I can't seem to google the right words

(I put this in the Vs Forum due to it's it being a political & controversy forum..so yeah)

I'm looking for the most current lists if it's available.

Not looking to know the big cities since I KNOW it's Philadelphia. But smaller ghetto cities such as Compton and Camden ..LOL

Look in the fifth column (Murder and nonnegligent manslaughter); there you'll find the number of homicides as well as the rate per 100,000 citizens. Washington DC, Baltimore, and Detroit put Philadelphia to shame, though I didn't look through this too much.

Philly, Camden, and Wilmington are considered the same metropolitan area (I'm not a geography dude; are these areas right next to each other?), with an overall rate of 553 homicides per 100,000 citizens. PHilly contributes the most , with 406 per 100,000. They also contribute the largest raw number of homicides (22,883 in 2006).

Short story: Camden is Disneyland compared to Philadelphia.

Lemme glance at the rest of the table real quick and see if other cities topple Philadephia.

EDIT: Huh. So far, New York/White Plains is higher (978 homicides per 100,000, for a total of 82,273 homicides in 2006). Los Angeles, Miami and Detroit are all very, very, very close to Philadelphia, but Philly retains the title of the "second city you're most likely to be murdered in."

Yeah. The Ben Franklin Bridge goes Philly => Camden.

Going through this, it does look like Philly is the highest. But I might be reading wrong?

Close. Check New York (and the LA metropolitan area) and you'll find higher per 100K rates, but disaggregating LA into portions, it breaks down somewhat (though Long Beach is still crazy high).

another example of Philly not being able to win anything.

We do. Period.

Its been relaxed for a while, but everyday someone appears to be shot down or killed in some way. Its incredibly sad, everyone hides inside after 6pm now...even though I still go out.

I was raised in the rough part of Paris so Im a bit hardheaded haha

Guess you didn't look at the reports. New Orleans has a paltry murder rate of 266 persons per 100,000 citizens, just about half that of Philly, which isn't even the top. Moreover, the number of homicides in Nawlins in 2006 was about 6,600, which is 90% lower than the raw number of homicides in New York, which doesn't even have the highest number of murders in the country.

I always figured that on the eigth day, tHe Lord had to take a big ol' dump and squatted right above the Jersey/Philly area.

Ohhhh ZZZzzing!!

I have a good sense of humor about the steelers when they are 4-1 going into the bye week.

Wow this coming from someone from PGH? I know Philly is a dump but Shittsburgh is right with it.

I know this is old but I couldn't let a chance at take a shot at Piggsburgh go by.

Ya know, I'm pretty sure you're reading that chart wrong. There weren't 82,273 homicides in one year in New York (jesus christ did they just walk down the streets spraying bullets? That's like 30x 9/11). There were 596 total homicides in New York City, 5.2 per 100,000 people in the whole region (total 978).

The 82,273 was the next column over, counting the raw number of violent crimes. New Orleans does have one of the highest, if not the highest, per 100,000 at 21.7. Memphis, TN is pretty close with 13.7, so you're actually more likely to get murdered in Memphis than New York due to the population size.

EDIT: I think the only cities higher than New Orleans (per 100,000) are in Puerto Rico, but I just skimmed it.

Nope, Detroit has the highest (outside of one city in Puerto Rico) with 23.0 per 100,000. So New Orleans loses...I guess...or wins

Pittsburgh may be kind of shitty, and yeah, we do have more than our fair share of Mullets; but overall I would describe my experience in this city as very academic. Almost all of the people I have met and now have relationships with have been through college/law school and alot of areas close to the city are very liberal. Its nice.

Outside of the city (or any city for that matter) is where you start running into more confederate flags.

Back on topic: Hardly anybody ever gets murdered here either. People in philly get murdered all the time compared to Pittsburgh. Per capita I am not sure how it stacks up since Philly has a lot more people and therefore, statistically speaking, should have a lot more murders.

This is sort of a tangential question but for the purposes of these statistics, what is a murder? Is it only a murder conviction? What about acquittals, was that victim still murdered? Is every homicide a murder? Are accidental killings murders?

New York City is very safe as long as you're in the city itself. It's all chique. Bronx and Brooklyn have some issues though.

I'm horrified to ever step into Detroit again. It's literally like being in a horror film and as you walk down the streets you feel as if in every window there is a pair of eyes watching you, studying you, hunting you. I mean watch any film set in NYC from the early 90s and that is what Detroit is now... but with less people and more murderers.

Looks like you're correct. Crap. Well, I don't feel like looking through it again to pick out the highest. Thanks for pointing that out, though.

New York City is completely safe. Your only going to get into trouble if you hang around the wrong people. I dislike Queens since it is the only place where you could find a drug dealer and grandma living side by side.

Mahhattan is the tourist area and duh of course it is safe only on that fact.

Harlem is also safe while you might see alot of young people dressed in black smoking all over the place it is safe.

South Mahhattan is where there is companies like RockStar but I have not been to where the gays flock.

I know there is alot of respected artists in the city. Like the Final Fantasy guy and the guy who made all those rocky paintings.

Fire Island beach is the beach you want to go when you come here. It is probably one the last beach besides stick beach that is clean.

Coney Island is shuting down but you can practically walk to it and back from your current desitation is less then six hours and twelve if you live elsewhere.

Brooklyn is really nice and the father away from the city areas the more freindlier and realistic the people are. Closer to the city areas you will find bums all over the place.

Night clubs mostly young people and college students comes there to dance. I hate the clubs and prefer polo and horse back riding. Yes you can ride around a horse in New York all over the place. Club people will most likely get into fights.

There is no group related crime problems but after the 9/11 there has been a rise in crime since the return of the so called troops. Most is sadly youths.

New York is the least of people concerns. I would have to say new Orleans is currently in the worst shape ever. I mean for people to ride around with a giant machine gun blowing cars off the sidewalks and people shooting from building tops is just unrealistic to bear in this day and age.

You have to be a coward to be afriad of Bronx. Bronx is beautiful compared tothe rest of the city. It is a stone throw away from New Hamsphere. Brooklyn is really really nice like I said the closer you are to the city it starts to get shity.

Also for some reason people are moving out of there homes. Some are heading south and I don't understand where the rest are going. This is why I see so many "out of townies" all over the place.

New York is a great place to live.
