History Repeats Itself

MarkMark

CAGiversary!
I have titled myself as a classic gamer. I like old school but also know that history repeats itself. History says that everysystem priced over $350 at launch has died utterly. Atari rules video games for more than 2 generations know what happened? video game crash! expensive games that were just cheap rehashes sent the video game industry to the gutter. Nintendo came along with a new idea and a decent price The Nintendo. After that sega came but did not claim #1 till SNES vs Genesis time and was barely #1. now we have Sony being number 1 twice over. the new generations bring a higher price and maybe a closer step tp video game crash. It will happen again sooner or later. Its only taking longer this time aroun because although sony is #1 is has not taken over 85% of the entire market. If the Ps3 is indeed priced at $499 Either Sony will crash or We will be one more step closer to video game death.

Breakdown- Sony has taken a step that will either envelop the farfarfar majority market (like 90%) or sony will die

Microsoft- Plain and simple nearly every first "next gen" system has meant death.
Sega felt this twice with the Saturn and the Dreamcast.

nintendo- the Nintendo console actually was #1 in the age of SNES vs Genesis for a few months nintendo has been able to keep away from the extreme Red danger zones so to speak by staying in thier own zone. nintendo hasnt had a few superb years but they are far from in danger. nintendo will stay alive althoguh not #1 far from being in dnager of death

History Wrong?

The PSP has begun its life as many others have in the handheld world. More Power More etc. Higher price+bare battery efficiency have meant death to all enemies of the gameboy. Although it has survived the first tets of survival (alot of people have it to begin) it faces the gamegear test. The gamegear found it self on par with the gameboy. It has a similar start. people bought the system and the initial games. However in the end a gameboy market just drowned it. Forget the DS games even the Ds system, GBA games are still hugely popular and make up a huge part of the handheld market. Gameboy killed its own brother the virtual boy (note* to anyone that says virtualboy was an utter waste just to sound cool your a dumbass, the virtualboy had an interesting concept but people were not ready to accept something new) I wouldnt be suprised if both the ds and psp died The gameboy advance has the largest library of games period with its backwards compatibility It remains the greatses handheld ever made wether u prefer GBA, SP, or the new Micro

Yeah, I think most people will agree sooner or later we'll see a decline in the video game market, but I don't think it will die. Some good thoughts, but a little difficult to see where it's going unless you are truly trying to say the industry will die.

Btw, no next gen systems have announced prices (although I wouldn't be surprised at $350+).

A few problems with this theory.

Microsoft has 1000 times more money than Sega. Microsoft can afford to give away the consoles if they have to in order to get customers.

If Sony breaks the $500 barrier then an Xbox 360 for $399 or $299 is going to look like a bargain.

To be honest I think Nintendo is going to be in the most danger. Launching first does not mean death. The key is to launch at a decent price and to launch with great games available.

Sega killed themselves because the price was too high, the release games were weak, AND they had manufacturing issues getting the systems on the shelf in time.

Also 3rd party publishing is much better than in the 80's The game quality is much better.

As long as nintendo has the gameboy they will not be in any danger.
MS may have the most money but they wont be able to take a lost forever. They already took a hit with Xbox1 so they have to break out even soon.

I dont think Nintendo is in the most trouble here. Granted, 3 major hardware companies in the market is a precarious balance. I actually think Sony might be the one to watch. And you are correct about MS being able to (in the worst case scenario) being able to just buy market share and continue to not make any money, yet mysteriously be considered a success.

Yeah, sony isn't atari, but sony can only do so much and make the bubble so big before it pops. I would also like to point out 60 and 70 dollar games are gonna hurt the industry IF it is indeed true and they are that high in price. After that we are all gonna love Gamerush (if you have one) cuz trade 3 get new title for 29.99 better be there still in a few years!

Sorry I have had a crappy work day. Trust me when your boss yells at you to try to help someone who knows only Spanish (i only know a little) and thinks you are being lazy because there is 4 people that only speak Spanish are waiting for help.

Almost exactly the same analogies...same bs. Do a search next time OP.

It is not the same bs...Hitler did not learn from history and made the same mistake a Napolean (srry for grammar) say what you wish but in the end those that do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it Besides, posting a broke link isnt the best way to get your point across either lol

as for everyone who says sony isnt atari...you are right...name wise...but thats pretty much it. Sony Fanboys i guess.... I mean im a Nintendo fanboy but im not out saying nintendo will P-own you o whatever they have just been around the longest
And also, this is the wrong forum for this thread. I appreciate you doing all that typing, though. Really I do.
actually it is because this is the deal we will be getting for the next generation of gaming

Sony and MS have far deeper pockets than Nintendo. I don't see Sony dying whether or not the PS3 is a big success.

Personally I don't see the video game industry dying or even having a major slump. I think there are a lot more older gamers than there were in the Atari/NES/SNES generations. And the quality of games is such that they can capture the imagination of the casual gamer.

But I could be wrong.

I think the whole OP's post was to convince us (himself?) that nintendo will come out ahead. I'm not saying it can't happen but let's analyze the facts in sexy bullet form. edit star form

* Xbox will be first out of the gate, that's clear, so right there we have a major appeal both to xbox fanboys and casual gamers looking for the latest hardware. Sony and Nintendo will face closer release dates which doesn't really help out either.

* Sony out of the major 3 has been the most accomodating to it's fanbase. Sony does not define itself in one genre, age group, or hardware. Things like backward compatibility, dvd player, online gaming, huge selection of games etc have stolen most of nintendo's thunder in a way that Sega never could. Let's not even use sega because they had great ideas but horrible execution (Sega CD, 32X).

* Nintendo continues to rehash old series like mario everything (pinball, golf, tennis, what's next mario basket weaving?) and relies mostly on first party exclusives. Third party publishers are jumping ship like the Titanic so fast that nintendo can't even claim exclusivitivty of games like Viewtiful Joe. Nintendo has yet to grow up with it's fans, sure there's younger gamers but I'm not.

* Gameboy did destroy all handhelds so far due to it's history. But now with the DS, it's relying on a very big gimmick in order to hold gamers attention for the average life of a handheld console( 5 years) and it will fail without the help of a "Gameboy" which it plans to do and within another 1/1 1/2 years will end up killing off the DS. Gamegear also never did what the PSP is doing, which is redefine what a handheld can do. While gamegear was a port happy machine, the PSP is leagues ahead of what we had until recently (GBA). And yeah the Virtual Boy was a disaster which is evident by it's severe lack of games given it's lifespan coupled with the medical problems people received and oh yeah it never sold well.

Conclusion: Xbox has lots of money since they don't rely solely on video games as support. Same with Sony. Nintendo however has to remain strong in gaming because that is their business. Xbox will stay in the market as long they continue to make any kind of headway in the market. Xbox will also end up most likely will the most advanced hardware because they deal with computers and have access and the technology to implent it into their gaming machines. Sony has massive fans and has managed to stay ahead in the market for 2 console wars, and don't even try to argue that the N64 was better overall, it had some things going for it but it was definately a failure especially compared to the NES and SNES. As long as sony continues to offer the selection combined with it's selection of hardware and massive list of exclusives it will continue to cut nintendo's and ms bottom line for years to come. It's to early on the PSP, it's WILL destroy the DS, I'm confident of that, and unless the new gameboy comes out and is wow worthy is will be a bad day for the big N. Having two handheld systems and competing against themselves at the same time, that would be disastorus. Imagine Sega throwing support at two console systems at the same time, oh wait I can, genesis and sega cd and look what happened to that, it can't be done. Nintendo will have to seriously make some changes if it hopes to gain ground, shed it's kiddy image and start attracting third party people, it has to look at what the other guys are doing right and try not to be so different all the time.

The home console market was very young (in terms of mainstream marketplace) at the time of the "big video game crash" of the 80s. Nintendo changed video games forever (we still are on the coat tails of the NES system, still get sequels to those games).

I think it'll be hard for the DS to compete in the cartridge format. It's been done forever. People don't want cartridges anymore. ever. Nintendo needs to make an "all in one" type system and maybe the revolution is that system. But as it looks like no its not. I think the next generation will be a failure if consoles sale for above 350. and 60-70 dollar games are way too high and no one will buy them. (they have a hard time selling them for 40-50 right now. I understand high end gaming comes at a high end price. but the majority of the core market place will be the 18-30 age group and i'm sorry the majority of that market aren't able to afford those kinds of prices. I think Nintendo needs to keep coming up with innovative ideas (like donkey kongas.. but not quite as late in the fold as it was this time.)

being able to be completely backward compatable with all Nintendo software is great.. but will we have to pay for that? or will it be free? that will define the next era..

and someone make my xbox replace my computer.. please M$ please.

First off, my link in the original post and this one is completly correct. When you click on it, it works. When you tried to quote me, it broke the link. Learn how to quote someone correctly next time. Here is the link in question. http://www.cheapassgamer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=45725
