As someone who volunteers to work with the homeless, I can tell you from my own personal experience that many of them have the same story in regards to family. They have parents, kids, brothers/sisters that want to help them. Their family has tried reaching out to them, and tried to get them to come home but many of them just don't want to. It is the life that they chose to live, and it is hard for someone in our position to understand that.

Obviously the guy isn't all there, I can't really give him a hard time for hiding the boots. To him, they are a treasure and he wants to treat them as such. The last thing he wants to do is get in a fight over something that was given to him.
 
whether he hid the shoes or sold them for w/e reason IDK. But helping homeless people randomly is sadly a waste of time, most of them do not want or are incapable of accepting "real" help.

whether its through addiction, mental issues or just depression/despair alot of them just aren't willing to change.
 
Again, you are looking at it from a narrow perspective. They don't want "real" help because they are just fine with where they are in life. All you can do is try to better their situation, feed them a meal, or give them some clothes. It is the little things that matter.

Right-o. The attempt to portray him as greedy or ungrateful comes from a perspective that (1) doesn't understand the perspective of the homeless man, (2) has zero interest in understanding that perspective, and (3) seems to think that any goodwill gesture that isn't responded to with complete capitulation and adulation on the part of the needy towards the giver is evidence that the recipient is greedy/ungrateful/helpless/etc.

It's quite unfortunate, really, that we demand to be lauded for our gifts when the idea is that we are supposed to give selflessly. More importantly, they aren't my shoes, so where do I have any right to express outrage over what he does with something that was never mine, nor anything I have any direct stake in?

I work with a lot of homeless in my job. Many of them have local families but choose to live the "urban outdoorsman" lifestyle. They refuse to follow any house rules given by people who might aid them. Two guys live under the bridge by my station. They come up to fill water jugs and charge their cell phone and dvd player almost every day. I helped look up the EBT card's new schedule for them. When I told them that they would get their money on the 9th instead of the 1st, the one guy gave me a pissed off look and said "I gotta buy food outa my own wallet?" ...sigh...The funny or sad part, depending on your outlook, is that one of the guys is from Puerta Rico and complains adamantly about the Indian and Pakistani immigrants taking all of the jobs.
 
I can't fault the man for his stubborness, look at how our Congress works. It's kinda smart of him to put the shoes away for an important day, especially since they were $100, which is plenty of money.
 
This "homeless" guy being a completely greedy fuck-wit doesn't take away from the awesome thing the cop did.

I hope someone sees this "homeless" guy in the street and breaks his nose. What an greedy, selfish scumbag.

Greedy how? Because he's afraid to wear a $100 pair of boots? Or because he's raking in all that dough begging for money and living the lavish lifestyle? Or because he might be mentally ill and in need of help? Just ridiculous.
