Hori Arcade stick 3, Arcade pro, and new Madcatz stick

CAGiversary!
to someone who didn't grow up playing arcades...

and has trouble consistently pulling off special moves in street fighter..

what would be the best stick?

I got the hori arcade stick 3 (the $45) one on amazon...

the unit feels a little light...and the joystick feels light although there is good "action"

It has a square gate, which I hear is standard in japan....but it might be easier for me to do quarter circles and half circles with a circular or octagonal gate........i think octagon would be awesome...

anyway, for someone like me...who wants a little HELP when it comes to pulling off special moves in frantic fights, etc.. would these more expensive $80-150 sticks with real sanwa parts, etc....make any difference at all for me?

Thanks!

I say try to learn through the stick you got first. Since you already paid $45 for a stick, don't spend on higher quality until you're certain you'll like the feel of the sticks. And if you don't, look for sticks that have Happ parts since those have circular gates. Worse comes to worst, you can always mod your stick.

There's a good thread on Arcade sticks in the CAG General Gaming thread.

Personally, I own the Hori Fighting Stick 3 (the one you mentioned), and I can pull off a dragon punch about 1/2 to 1/3 of my attempts playing SSF2THD Remix. (F-D-DF is my gold-standard for testing....since I was never good enough to do it regularly back in the SF2 arcade days.) I'm much better at QCF / QCB moves with the Hori stick.

I've pre-ordered the TE stick (at Amazon), since the FS3 is just too light. I'm hoping the MadCatz stick will have enough weight that I can put it on my lap without it sliding around on me. I'm sure we will be seeing a lot of "hands on" reviews of these sticks in the next 2-3 weeks....and they won't all be coming from the hardest of the hardcore fighting gamers.

FWIW, MadCatz's Standard Edition stick is supposed to be cheaper than that $80 price threshold, and should be more accommodating to an octagonal gate than the FS3 is (from what I've read -- I've never tried to mod a stick before).

I feel your pain. I'm still looking around for a good stick for street fighter 4 and tekken. For SSF2HD, the 360 controller just isn't cutting it.

When you get it post your impressions of it.

thank you! 1/3 or 1/2 times just isn't good enough! I probably have 1/3 or 1/4...maybe even less odds of pulling off these moves..

Yes, I've found it to be too light...and i also find that for whatever reason, I'm able to use it better while crossing hands and using left hand for the joystick.

so you pre-ordered the TE ($150 stick?!)

hope it's worth the $$

I probably would rather get the hori arcade PRO 3 over the cheaper new street fighter stick..

i already HAVE the hori arcade fighting stick 3. The $45 one.. and that's what i'm having difficulty with. It's almost easier with the PS3 controller..but not easy enough for me.

I actually just got my HRAP 3 a month ago and I have to say that I love it. I kind of wish I had waited a little longer for the SFIV TE stick, but what I have is good enough for now. Once the TE sticks become available again, hopefully in April, I'll probably pick up one.

The best way to pull off dragon punches with Japanese sticks is to just do a zigzag motion. Since the gate is squared off, the final motion follows a straight line on the bottom side of the gate to the DF direction. Then again, I grew up playing fighting games at the arcade that it seems so natural to me.

does the stick feel light to you?

with my hori arcade stick 3, the stick is very clicky...but very light.

do you find the button layout unnatural feeling? crossing my hands over feels better to me...and faster

also would you say you can pull off the moves pretty much every time?

The HRAP isn't light at all. I usually put it on the coffee table when I play, but when I do put it on my lap, it's pretty stable. You have the Fight Stick3 I believe, I bought the $100 Hori stick.

The stick is always going to be "clicky" and the buttons will have that layout. That's just how Japanese arcades are made. The thing that's special about the SFIV TE stick buttons is that you can use the lefthandside buttons if you want the Japanese layout and the righthandside buttons if you want the American layout:

The forums on shoryuken.com are really helpful with all things arcade sticks.

I meant the little joystick itself. does it feel too light that it's a little too easy to move?

and can you pull off the moves pretty much every time you want to?

Mine feels fine. I think the Fight Stick 3 uses a Hori joystick. THe HRAP3, on the other hand, uses an actual Sanwa stick. Maybe that's why yours feels light.

As for the moves, yes. The only time my execution isn't there is when I'm not sitting properly in front of the stick. Like I said, I grew up playing fighting games. That doesn't necessarily mean I'm good, but pulling off the special moves is second nature to me.

Oh and there's that thing in Tekken with the Mishimas and their EWGF shenanigans. But that's another issue. haha
