Horse Slaughter Ban Stupidity

Congress imposed a back-door ban on horse slaughter in 2006 to try to improve humane conditions, but a new government report says it has backfired and the same horses are now being exported for slaughter in Canada and Mexico, and they likely are suffering more along the journey.
The Government Accountability Office said the policy has led to “unintended consequences” such as depressed prices for all horses and an increase in reports of animal neglect, abuse and abandonment. GAO said Congress and the Obama administration may need to revisit the entire issue.
“Those horses are traveling farther to meet the same end in foreign slaughtering facilities where U.S. humane slaughtering protections do not apply,” GAO said in unusually blunt language that said that the horses are sometimes shipped in too-small containers for hundreds of miles, and that the inspection regime is too lax to help.

Exactly why can't people eat horsemeat if they want to?

Isnt it pretty much the same problem with stem cell? We are losing jobs and falling behind in science due to our moral issue. In the mean time Japan, Singapore and South Korea are making more progress than us because they don't give a dman

It's not morality, it's stupidity.

Morality would be looking out for the poor, really reigning in the crooks on Wall Street, and protecting the environment. Doing things that require real leadership, courage, and hard work.

This is just bullshit propaganda designed to get out the moronic "I like horsies" vote. There's no good reason why horses somehow deserve more protection from the slaugterhouse then pigs and cattle.

Why can't we just eat people? Lets solve morality all together... throw people under the bus, literally, then scrape up what's left and make some delicious soylent green.

lame

The whole situation is rather idiotic, like dogs a huge number of not good enough for show animals are produced for those few animals "worthy" of show status and increased food costs combined with high unemployment has resulted in the market for these extra animals hitting rock bottom. There have been a few news articles in our paper over the last couple years about people letting horses starve to death, and dumping living and dead horses up in the mountains because in some cases the horses aren't even worth enough to even pay for the shipping to a foreign slaughter house.
But then telling someone to eat a bag of dicks wouldn't have the same meaning.
Nah, it's just selective then. I may like Filet Mignon but you prefer Ribeye.

Agreed. This is a bunch of sentimental idiots forcing dopey policy that is bound to backfire. I like horses as much as the next guy but I don't assume that everyone everywhere in America can afford to properly care for all of their horses to the end of their "natural life" (which is really not natural because the horses have grown up in captivity)

Beyond sanitary and humane grounds, I have absolutely NO idea what right the US government has to step in and dictate what meats Americans can and can't eat.
slaughtered horses are rarely if ever used for food in the human population
so wtf are they used for?

I would assume that they are also used for food for certain zoo animals. I know that Disney feeds their lions horse meat at their Animal kingdom park.
