WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. House of Representatives voted on Wednesday to overturn a recently enacted law requiring safety trigger locks on all hand guns sold in the United States.

The Republican-controlled House handed a victory to opponents of gun control by a vote of 230-191.

Rep. Marilyn Musgrave, a Colorado Republican, argued that the added cost of the trigger locks is passed on to gun owners and that they "do not stop accidental shootings."

Last fall, President George W. Bush signed legislation giving gun makers broad protections from civil lawsuits, but that law contained the mandatory trigger lock provision.

The amendment overturning the requirement for trigger locks was attached to a larger law enforcement spending bill for next year that has not yet been considered by the Senate.

Tell me, am I missing something here? Is the thought of people, say........... not killing themselves threatening?

Well if you knew a little about the topic before you shoot your mouth on it.

Trigger locks are worthless. They come with any new handgun that you buy but no one ever uses them. It is just in unessacary expence for us law-abiding gun owners. This just shows how out of touch lawmakers are when they make ignorant laws like the trigger locks.

Most law-abiding gun owners keeps their guns under lock and key anyways. This is just one of those laws that were put in place "for the children". I am glad most of Clinton era gun laws are getting overturned and expiring. Trigger locks should be available for anyone that wants to buy them but being mandatory is/was excessive.
No comprimise. That's the republican mentality.
If their was only "comprimise" before this law was voted in it wouldn't have to be overturned.

Why must we fall into the trap that politicians want us to. The Republicans vs. Democrats war is the state of mind all politicians want us be in. Then they can make out of of touch laws and we will defend them since "your" party made the law/bill... etc. Be a good citizen and don't defend a law just because your party wants you to be a mindless tool for them.

Don't fall for the "for the children" trap.

This sounds remarkably like the auto industry's criticism of the idea of mandating that cars come with seat belts back in the 60's.

nice pun.

Me too. I've always wanted me some automatic weapons, in case the UN tries to come take them from me on July 4. Charlton Heston's comin' over with his bazookas, grenades, a bottle of leibfraumilch and some hookers. We're gonna snort coke, watch "On Golden Pond" and "Rambo: First Blood Part 2" and make sure them UN bastitches don't try to come take our guns!

Ya see ... trigger locks were made mandatory for the simple fact that most law abidding gun owners did not have their guns under lock and key. The slight extra cost ( a whopping 62 cents per gun) that was passed on to the consumer was to help ensure that at least the owner had no excuse for not having a lock at their discretion upon purchase. As a gun owner I whole heartedly support trigger locks being required as much as I support seat belts being required to be installed as you purchase a car. If you don't like the locks, don't use them.

Okay, remove the trigger locks. But impose life-time jail sentences for anyone whose child or child's friend gets ahold of your gun and shoots/kills someone.
