How long should I wait to buy the 360 slim?

I've been wanting to buy a 360 for years, but decided to go with the PS3 for the free wireless online. The new 360 sounds like it has fixed most of the issues that bugged me about the elite, but I don't know how reliable it will be, so I want to read some reports about it's failure rate first. Does anyone know how long it took for the original 360 models to start showing problems? I would love to get one this year, but I don't want to get one at all if it's going to have even more problems than the original. Also, will it work well if I use it horizontally? (I want to put it exactly where my Xbox is currently)
