How many of you shop at Wal-mart?

If so, how often? I personally despise Wal-mart and would never even think of buying something from there unless there was no other alternative.

Why do you "despise" them?

Waits for typical answer......

I hate them for running Toys R Us and KB toys into bankruptcy. I have 1 wal-mart near me and I hate it (worst then my local Kmart IMO). I would hate to see what would happen if Wal-mart drives under companies into the brink of extinction. I also hate the way the way they handle their suppliers. To their credit though, while out of state, I went by a Wal-mart and it wasn’t so bad (it was a superstore). I also have seen their return policy and it is good. They are also forcing companies to use RFID’s which I think is a great idea (but a bit too costly for companies right now).

Wal-Mart is the nation's (and the world's) biggest retailer. But the problem is not just Wal-Mart - Toys R Us, McDonalds, Microsoft, Barnes and Noble, Starbucks, the Gap, Kinko's, Circuit City, Home Depot, Nations Bank...all wipe out the smaller, more local competition. Why? Because they can. McDonalds in the Eiffel Tower, K-Mart in Greenwich Village - is this our destiny? Read on....

Only a company of their size can buy direct from manufacturers, cutting out the distributor. They buy so cheaply they can resell to other stores at cheaper than wholesale. Thus they can ruin the competition through PREDATORY PRICING.

The trend of mega-mergers and huge chains is wiping out small business everywhere, and with it the distinctiveness of local cultures. Not just in the U.S., but all over this great varied planet. Chains are everywhere, and who benefits? Not the small business, not the small town, not the individual - only a few guys pretty high up in the chain's food chain. Consider: Wal-Mart's annual sales are larger than the entire Gross Domestic Product of 161 countries! Do the Wal-Math: They are bigger than most nations, yet they have no government that answers to the people it affects. They are unaccountable to anyone. Democracy must include the ability to control those who control us!

WAL-MART RULES

If a town declines to welcome GodzillaMart, the next town over will take it, pulling trade and tax dollars out of local coffers. The town has no choice - the terms are dictated by the retail giant from afar. Is this right, fair, or decent? Is this Middle American family values? No more mom and pop stores here. The nation is being covered by a Wal-to-Wal-Mart carpet, the nation blanketed not with daisy chains of wildflowers, but something more like kudzu. Welcome, Weed-Mart.
Big businesses put their money in big banks, taking it far out of town. Money spent in a chain store leaves town on the next electronic transfer, while money spent in a local store circulates in the community seven more times before leaving. In other words, chains use local workers and consumers as a colony, extracting their wealth and exporting to the mother country. Sound familiar? Can you say American Revolution?

BUT IT'S CHEAP AND CONVENIENT!

YES. For shoppers. But guess what: Democracy, human rights, and social justice are never cheap, and seldom convenient. If we shop conveniently while Rome burns, we'll have only ourselves to blame when they've reduced our workforce to workfare and our towns to malls, our culture to cookie-cutter sameness.
YES. IT'S CONVENIENT TO HIRE CHEAP LABOR.
But there are harmful, hidden costs to convenience.

SMALL BUSINESS PEOPLE...

...end up working in a department of Wal-Mart, nostalgic for their homey store and friendly neighborhood shopping experience. And lots of these jobs are part-time and without benefits. Who are the pillars of your community? The merchant, the banker, the principal, the poet, the police chief, the alderman.....None of these people can decide what sort of town you'll have. ONLY Wal-Mart CAN. Megastores tear the social fabric.

SMALL TOWN LIFE ALTERED

Downtowns destroyed, the shopping experience robbed of its community flavor, reduced to Downtown in a Box. Shopping malls are all the same - you could be anywhere in the country (or world), except where you really are - your town.

THEY'VE GOT US...

...filing through their aisles and checkstands in orderly fashion, buying their wares and buying their revision of the flavor of our lives. Perhaps we've forgotten what it was like to walk instead of drive, to encounter our neighbors on foot instead of in traffic. Perhaps we've forgotten the vibrancy of civic life - the discussion of issues, the (God forbid!)...

POLITICAL ACTIVITY

that takes place on city streets. In a privately owned shopping mall, it's illegal to pass out leaflets telling shoppers about the suffering of the workers who picked the strawberries, sewed the sneakers....This separation of commerce from social responsibility means that we don't get to vote on basic human rights where it really matters, where we have power: at the point of sale.

WHAT ABOUT THE WORKERS?

The concentration of ownership and power, along with treaties like GATT and NAFTA, means more and cruder exploitation of workers everywhere. Jobs flee America as manufacturing is done by people like Wendy Diaz in Honduras. Diaz told Kathie Lee Gifford what it was like to earn 31 cents an hour, allowed to go to the bathroom only twice a day, be cursed and screamed at, and be able to do nothing about it. There is one unionized Wal-Mart - it's in Ontario.
Wal-Mart's "Faded Glory" t-shirts were made by workers earning 23 cents an hour. Faded Glory indeed! One wishes to ask Wal-Mart, in the famous words asked of Senator Joe McCarthy, "Have, you, at long last, no human decency?"
Most of the workers in these cheap or slave-labor factories around the third world are WOMEN - or GIRLS!. Think FAMILY VALUES here. And two-thirds of employees in the retail industry are women. Retail is marked by low wages, low benefits, poor health care, and powerless employees. The United Food and Commercial Workers led a Women's Day protest against Wal-Mart; according to UFCW Vice President Patricia Scarcelli,
"We cannot change the economic condition of women until we change the wages and working conditions in the retail industry. And we cannot change the retail industry until we change Wal-Mart. They will not have our consumer dollars to wage war on our paychecks."

The White House, under pressure from workers' movements around the world, has instituted a Task Force on sweatshops, pushing for independent monitoring and a living wage. Wal-Mart has refused to join in. They have also opposed health care reform and minimum wage increase, and defied the embargo on Haiti's former military regime, paying workers 14 cents an hour. Why? That's their job. What's ours?

MUSIC

Wal-Mart tells the record industry what they don't like, and the industry produces special "clean" versions for sale by Wal-Mart - versions which are then resold to other retailers. Not to defend obscenity, but look who's deciding what's obscene? Is Wal-Mart your daddy? They are the biggest music retailer in the country - in many places, the only music retailer. Wal-Mart has become the W-chip, blocking or altering album covers and lyrics - not on your home television, but at the global level. Such power is never restricted to obscenity - it always leads to wider controls. They cause musicians to censor themselves in advance. Get Wal-Mart out of the censorship business!

THE ENVIRONMENT

The more concrete we lay, the more we get in a motorized box to drive to a great box to buy things in boxes to take home to our boxes...the more we box ourselves and the environment in. Mall means sprawl. Look at the landscape that is our heritage, our birthright, and decide if you want it malled. Do you want America to become Generica? Stop Sprawl-Mart.

IT'S INEVITABLE - IT'S PROGRESS.
YOU CAN'T STOP IT. IT'S MORE EFFICIENT.
IT'S CONVENIENT. I LIKE IT. GET OVER IT.

Well, God help us. Convenience and efficiency do not make it right. Placing a high value on economic effectiveness and a low value on human fairness and diversity is not the American way. It's not any way at all, except the survival of the meanest.

IT'S NOT PROGRESS!

Wal-Mart may have won this round, but David did beat Goliath in the end. Among those opposing Wal-Mart are the UFCW, FIEF (an international labor organization working against Wal-Mart's exploitation in many countries), and community organizations from Gig Harbor, Washington, Santa Clarita, California, De Land, Florida, Bath, Maine, Guelph, Ontario....to the fine folks at "Save Our Small Town Way of Life" in Lancaster, Pennsylvania.
When you make decisions as a consumer, you may be cutting your own throat as a worker.

BE A CITIZEN

think, learn, and act. It's a matter of community vs. consumerism.....

BRAINS VS. CHAINS

Waits for typical answer......
Because they are a big corporation and therfore evil.....

I hate Walmart, but not for the reasons most people give. I just don't like people that go there for the most part, so I shop elsewhere.
What a bias, bleeding heart liberal view.

Get a clue and back up your "post" with some facts.
You talking to me DX? I know my facts, but am too lazy to type everything out. This topic was not even supposed to be how Wal-mart is evil. I am just asking if CAG members shop there often.
I go there when I need little shit. Tape, clasp envelopes, shampoo. That stuff is way cheaper than anywhere else.
Really? I find that my local shoprite or CVS has better prices on everything compared to my closest Wal-mart. I guess I am the only one.
I go there when I need little shit. Tape, clasp envelopes, shampoo. That stuff is way cheaper than anywhere else.
Same but for everthing else there are other places

The fact that people in this thread are talking about shopping at "other places" than WM disavows Mookys post.

You obviously have a choice, dont shop there.

But dont go talking shit out of your ass about how WM does this and that when you know NOTHING about the facts.

Im in a small town, a village actually of 5000 people. There is a mom and pop drug store, but the are pricey, $2 more for a bottle of head and sholders.

i hate when people call walmart evil...

DAMN YOU WALMART AND YOUR REASONABLY PRICE ITEMS IN CONVENIENT LOCATIONS! *shakes fist at sky*

so a business is a good one if it doesnt do good? you're basically saying walmart is a evil because people are shopping there instead of other stores. so apparently in your mind, the only stores that are good are ones who are doing really shitty in sales and nobody shops at.

Calling walmart evil b/c they're company is doing good is stupid. People dont have to shop at walmart.

too many people have been bitching about this recently and its annoying as hell.

I shop at Walmart. It is the closest place around here that sells video games. It takes about 30 to 40 minutes to get the nearest Best Buy, Circuit City, Target, Toysrus, and the mall. It is cheaper for me to buy groceries at Super Walmart than it is to buy them at the grocery store.

But dont go talking shit out of your ass about how WM does this and that when you know NOTHING about the facts.

And you do? You haven't provided a single rebuttal to any of the arguements presented in this thread other than to say they are wrong.

For every town you say doesnt want WM Ill show you 5 that welcome them with open arms.I have already stated that WM is one of the main things keeping inflation down and providing deals for "cheapass's" like yourself.

I work at Wal-Mart. I'm a Support Manager. I'm certainly not brainwashed.

They incorporate well-known and extremely sharp business tactics. I've been with the company for 7 years. Yes, there are things that piss me off, but hey, it's business.

All the small business owners & "Mom & Pop" shops need to realize that they cannot just continue doing what they've been doing for years to get by. They need to see a Wal-Mart grand opening as a wake-up call to use more agressive and imaginative ways to continue to bring customers in. It can definately keep small business from growing stale & withering away.

It's a shame that everyone blames Wal-Mart for the problems of the small business owner. If the business owner truly tries hard & makes big changes involving selling practices, business hours, daily specials, etc. I would indeed feel for them if they fail. But, like I said- those that sit on their asses and whine "Woe is me. Damn Wal-Mart!" have no place in the business world.

"There is only one constant thing... Change."

1. For years they proclaimed that "We Buy American" and that they supported American companies and American workers. They moved their worldwide purchasing headquarters to China and is America's largest importer of goods from China. They are a major factor in the loss of American manufacturing jobs.

2. Walmart routinely engages in illegal union busting and worker intimidation. The meatcutters in Jacksonville, TX organized into a union, Wal-Mart first refused to recognize the union, and then responded by firing almost all meatcutters nationwide and switching to prepackaged meat. Walmart is also being prosecuted for worker intimidation and illegal union busting in Aiken, SC and Palestine, TX, among other places nationwide.

3. Walmart routinely violates labor laws and hires illegal aliens. Workers are often forced to work off the clock, are often not paid overtime, and are often denied lunch or rest breaks as required by law. Walmart also routinely violates child labor laws, and was forced to pay the largest child labor law fine in Maine history. There are other allegations and investigations ongoing nationwide. They routinely lock in workers during late shifts. And they are under federal investigation for knowingly hiring illegal aliens to clean their stores nationwide.

4. Walmart routinely practices predatory pricing, illegally selling goods below cost temporarily in order to drive competitors out of business.

5. Walmart is essentially government subsidized, because they pay their workers so little, and because workers are rarely eligible for health benefits, state and federal tax dollars go to these people in the form of welfare, food stamps, healthcare programs, and housing.

6. Walmart discriminates against women. Women are frequently paid less for the same job, and are not trained or promoted at the same levels as men. The largest civil rights class action against a private employer ever is underway, and damages could be in the billions.

What I will say, though, is that it is possible to compete with Walmart, and even beat Walmart. A grocery store in the company I work for has a store that shares a wall with a Walmart that has a full supermarket. The grocery store is not only profitable, they're kicking Walmart's ass. It helps that their illegal strategies are not tolerated here, but it took major planning and maximum effort for a large regional chain to do this. But it can be done.

Crickett003, what do you say to the small business owner who was put out of business by Walmart's illegal predatory pricing?

I rarely shop at Walmart, maybe 2 or 3 times a year. Every Walmart I have been to in my area has been dirty, and just junky looking especially compared to Target. I have never found a deal on a video game at Walmart either. I'd rather go to Target.

Well I hate Walmart and I've shopped there mabye 3 times. I find there quality to suck and there prices really aren't that much better so I choose not to shop there.

Last time I went to a Wal-Mart, it was in a bad neighborhood and this lady was trying to get people to apply for their charge card. She said, "Apply for the Wal-Mart charge card, no ID required."

there none near me is that a good or bad thing??
Crickett003, what do you say to the small business owner who was put out of business by Walmart's illegal predatory pricing?
1)That was almost ten years ago.Show me ONE commercial where this has been stated in the past 8 years?Oh but you need something so you will go that far back.Yeah shit is cheaper to make overseas.Like WM is the ONLY retailer to do that.

2)Union Busting? What is this the damn 1920's?WM doesnt bust unions, they show employess they dont need to pay someone $60 a month to speak for them. They have that right now.Friviolous lawsuits that watse taxpayer money.Unions are just not needed anymore.PERIOD.

3)Hiring illegals?Once again you have the WRONG FACTS!That was a contracted company to clean floors in certain WM stores.WM never hired the people, the people who contracted did.WM has to police everyone else as well as themself?Get a clue and get some facts.

The case of working off the clock in Oregon...once again Im going to prove you have ZERO facts. That "case",which had over 100K people involved wound up being whittled down to 60 which got about $130 each.LOL

4)Predatory pricing? You obviously dont know how retail works. Many items you automatically take hits on.Televisions,diapers,formula,etc...this is NOT AN OPTION if you intend to stay in business. You think WM wants to lose money? They lower their prices only after someone else beats them to it.Unless its on of the staples I listed above.

5)70% of all WM associates have health coverage.Try again!

6)Another lawsuit that has ended in the 100K range.Never proven and WM has shown diversity initatives in the past year to make up for you bleeding heart liberals.

You a member of the UFCW?You sure sound like one of those cowardly, liberal, using only certain parts of stories idiots.

Or are you "Im so cool cause I hate WM" idiots?

I go there probably twice a week, but not by choice. Besides Wal-Mart, we have a Krogers, Hastings, and a bunch of fast food .. but no where to really buy products. Wal-Mart owns this town.

:applause: Unions were needed when the were no or few employment laws.

In a free market economy, people have the freedom to go wherever they choose and pay whatever they want. I shop at Wal-Mart every week. Wal-Mart creates jobs for many people, and provides shoppers with cheap goods. If you hate Wal-Mart, don't shop there. If enough people do this, they will have to change.

I once worked for Wal-Mart for about 3 months. I am grateful that they allowed me to work for them and make money.

Businesses (including small businesses) have to change and adapt over time. It is a dog eat dog, survival of the fittest world.

Well i did before where i used to live cause i had to.It was 20 miles away and It was the only store around besides Price Chopper. But PC doesnt have like shampoo and stuff like that so it was more conveinent. But now i shop at Hannaford cause its 20 seconds away from me and if i need something else i can go to Target or a few other places. Though since i went to walmart so long i have a detailed route that makes hannoford just not the same.

WM has been great for our area, they gave 1st consideration for jobs to locals, they have donated lots of $$ to local charities, they have donated goods and time and service, and even their grounds for local groups. Prices are great, price matching is the bomb, it is clean, it is close, it is always open, and if Mom and Pop can't hang they need to move outta the way. Evil? Hell no.. Scary, yeah if you are in it's way >.< Now if only they could stock more Anime......

I don't go to Walmart because there aren't any Walmart stores in my area. But there is one about an hour drive from my house. Sometimes there's some stuff I gotta do in that area, and there's times where I might go to the Walmart there just to check it out. However, I prefer Target much more.
Last time I went to a Wal-Mart, it was in a bad neighborhood and this lady was trying to get people to apply for their charge card. She said, "Apply for the Wal-Mart charge card, no ID required."

WTF is with that? Are they actually expecing people not have ID on them? Hope Walmart has a few $$$ stuck aside to cover the write-offs on credit card applications for people like that. No ID, no audit trail for the bill.

I only go into WalMart when I can't find an item anywhere else, which involves exhausting the local supermarket chains, K-Mart, Target and Walgreens.

Their sales do nothing for me, since they're on items I don't use or need or want.

1. They were forced to stop doing that in late 1998 after it was completely exposed as the fraud it was. They still ran ads about helping American manufacturing jobs afterwards. Lets see, 1998... Thats two years into your window. Yes, lots of companies buy cheap crap from China, but they don't proclaim themselves the champions of American workers.

2. Unions are not needed anymore? With the increasing size of these mammoth corporations, Unions are needed now more than ever. The power of collective bargaining is the only chance these workers have of negotiating anything close to a fair deal, and Unions are there to protect you when the company decides it doesn't want to play by the rules. Yes, its a free market, but workers have the legal right to organize and collectively bargain. Walmart illegally denied that right to the meatcutters in Jacksonville TX, and then fired all meatcutters nationwide in retaliation. Walmart intimiates workers, threatens to fire them if they even speak of Unions, and uses tactics such as transferring anti-union workers into a store days before a union election in order to rig the vote, and then transfer them back out again after. What industry do you work in anyway?

3. Of the illegal workers, yes, they were hired by contractors, but Wal-Mart is currently under investigation for not only knowing that these contractors were using illegal workers, but for conspiring with these contractors in order to save money and protect themselves legally. Walmart executives are accused of doing this, not just locals.

About the case in Oregon about overtime, 83 workers were found to have not been paid overtime. There were only 134 workers involved in the lawsuit in the first place, not 100,000, this was not a national class action suit but only involved some of the 18 Walmarts in Oregon. There are currently lawsuits ongoing regarding either being forced to work off the clock, or not being paid overtime, in 30 states. Walmart recently settled such a case in Colorado for 50 million.

I notice you didn't touch any of my other points about child labor laws or lock-in at night.

4. YOU obviously do not know the law, or the facts. Predatory pricing is when you sell items below cost in order to put your competition out of busines. It is against anti-trust laws. What Walmart has done is sell staple items, common things that people buy, below cost, have higher margins on other items, and then once the competitor is gone, raise the prices on the money losing items. Again, this is an illegal practice which they have been prosecuted for on numerous occasions.

5. This is the myth of Wal-Mart. 70% of their workers have health coverage, but this includes Medicare, state programs, and being covered by a family member's health insurance. Less than 40% of Walmart employees have health insurance through Walmart, but very often it is too expensive and does not cover basic needs, and workers use Medicare to cover those costs. Part time workers must be employed there for 2 years to be eligible, and even then, only for themselves and not for their family.

6. That lawsuit is nowhere near over. Its the largest civil rights lawsuit in history, it is ongoing.

I'm a cowardly liberal for fighting for fair and equitable treatment at work? And what are you, brave for sitting back and taking it in the ass from your employer?
