I've got two computers. None of them are old, just that I have some big files that I want to put on another computer. Is it possible to connect them through an ethernet port?

Thanks

I believe you then have to network them together. What about connecting them through a USB? Wouldn't that then make one of them like an external harddrive and then easy transfer could occur? I'm just throwing some ideas because I've never thought about connecting two computers through a USB really.

Can't ,I don't have a usb cord for that. But how would I network them together?

You have a couple of options depending on how you are set up. Do you have a home network and WinXP? You can just share the files/folders and transfer em that way.

You could also use a cross-over cable to hook the two computers up via ethernet cards and do the transfer that way.

You could try just directly connecting them, I dunno if it will work though. Serial ports are the way to go :p.

You could just use a network hub, I know that would work.

EDIT: Ah yes you would need a crossover to just connect them together.

Why don't you just pop the drive out of the old pc, slave it on the new PC and copy your files? It's a little more invasive than using a crossover cable, but it's quite a bit quicker.

Make sure both machines pull an IP, attach the crossover cable between the two machines, and map to the C drive on the machine you want the data from.

It's actually rather simple. If both machines are newer, you may not even need a crossover cable to do the transfer, a normal network cable may be fine.

I have a Windows 98 computer and eventually I will buy a Vista computer. I am going to have these same problems too.

Haha, that's what I do even though I have a network... it's just that much faster for me and incredibly easy to do.
