I just realised why I started getting away from PC's and back into consoles.

Ok,

Small Rant the short and sweet kind.

I had not done to much of either types of gaming but about 2 years ago I built a PC and it seemed great and all. Then I had a craving for some console gaming.

Fast forward to now and I decided to get some older PC games and most seem to be playing ok. I have had to do some work but that is expected. Then I try to get some of the newer games and most those play ok. Key word being MOST.

Undying, Serious Sam:Second Encounter, etc and they simply will not run. I have well over the specs and the most current drivers, updates, patches. I have played with Bios and I still have trouble.

No wonder the PC market is a dying breed....

The pc market is not dying.

And I have undying and it runs fine.

If you are overclocking I suggest you stop since many problems stem from that.

Heh. Were you a PC gamer a decade + ago? Used to have to jump through hoops to get games to work properly.

I play a select few PC games, and gear my machines towards the games in question. I prefer console gaming for several reasons, 1 of them being that every game works out of the box.

Yeah back when you might have to adjust the high memory or make sure to add NOEMS to your config.sys file etc to get enough low base memory.

Now its Bios, Drivers, updates, rendering options. The list just goes on. I am still trouble shooting it and I know Undying works fine on a lot of computers. Thing is I have high enough specs. I just went out and bought more ram and a newer video card.

I am reluctant to upgrade to XP due to the fact that I have such great succes with running older early 90's software on my computer now and besides the few adventure games and FPS there isnt much else I have time for on the PC front right now.

I buy a lot of PC games and still support it. I actually prefer it to consoles most times (as there is nothing like sitting on the couch/chair and having to only worry about a controller in your hand) but the gamemakers have to go through so much to make it compatible and then someone always has a problem.

Sounds to me like you are a Win 9x/ME user. If this is the case, then THAT IS THE PROBLEM. I don't care what it says on the box. Win 9x/ME is not worth using for current/future PC games.

He said he can't get older games to work. Undying should be able to work on Windows 9x.

It will all get figured out eventually I didnt know that Win 98 causes a lot of problems with current software.?

Anyway yeah the old stuff is where I am spending my time right now. The advantage is that you can get the creme of the crop very cheaply.

The newer games (and actually they arent that new) but they are the ones with which I am wasting time trying to get to work. I will get it figured out in the next couple of days or drop the whole issue and hold them for the new computer I am bound get in the next 1-2 years.

Anyway being a part of this board allows me to find stuff at sweet prices so I will always have a ncie supply of games.

The way i see it is that windows xp is allot more stable and user friendly, but highly tweak-able. It is kind of like the jump from 3.1 to 95. it was a big one where you loose a little but gain allot more. Most of my school is run off xp. The server computers are all XP and it has really help streamline everything. I'm not saying that XP is the best out there but for compatibility with games (come on guys, that is all we buy our computers for anyway) windows is good. Most semi resent games that don't automatically work with xp have xp patches available. AND even if you are not one for downloading patches xp even has an option to run exe's with 9x and the like support. AND even if all of that doesn't work than there are dos emulators out there for the classic games. I still will say that Linux or Amiga is better but xp Is a good choice for the mainstream. Pro not home.

I'd perfer added support with mods, patches, (good and easy) multiplayer as opposed to a game that works right but may have alot of bugs on the consoles. Just me though.

I really like that option as well as the whole "mouse look" thing. Something that kind of bugged me was that allot of FPS console games used to be designed around the more limiting controls. Games like Time Splitters 2 have allot of up and down action where as oldies like goldeneye are less vertical (||| right?) intensive.

Console games are so much simplier it seems. There are rarely any problems running a game, no system requirments to worry about, etc. Not to mention consoles are much cheaper. I mean a real nice gaming rig would cost you quite a lot, but consoles cost aboput 300 tops. Computer games def. have their advantages over some console games. But take my case for example, I never had a computer until I got to college really. I had access to them in high school, but it was a catholic school so the computers really sucked. However, I have had gaming consoles since I was about 4 or 5 so now i can't imagine trying to play games with a mouse or such. I guess what I'm trying to say is whether you lean towards console or pc it comes from a habit you form at some point.

PC Gaming sales have been dwindling as compared to console sales the past few years, but the fact that a high-end PC will still demolish any console combined with the PC's inherent superiority for FPS and RTS games will keep it around as long as there is gaming.

I gave up on PC gaming when I figured that my gaming options were either a $199 PS2 or approximately $400-$500 in upgrades.

There is no such thing as Server XP! Server 2000 or Server 2003 but not XP.

FYI. XP is based off of Windows 2000. I prefer to use 2000 for gaming because the install takes up much less space (1.5 gigs vs. XP's 3+ gigs) and it has less of the fluffiness. If 2000 had the improved plug and play features and the improved start menu, I would have no need for XP.

We use xp pro on our school servers. We have personal network space on that server and the server is run off of windows xp
