Alright, so I'm turning 16 in May, and I really want to start working as soon as I can. That's why I'm planning ahead of time. The week after I turn sixteen, I'm going to Ralphs to get a job application, and then to school for a work permit. I just hope that the whole strike thing will be settled by then, because I heard that you have to be 18 and older to work, while the strike is going on. I don't want to work at a fast food place mostly because I'll be the only asian guy there. Now, I don't wanna sound racists, but I live in an area with a lot of mexicans, and ALL the fast food places close to me, are just fully employed with mexicans. It'd just be odd for me to work there.

So, what I'm asking is what were the first job you guys had. Or, what job should I try to go for, in this day and age.
 
Age: 16

My first job was last summer at a bank(www.ranchofcu.org) where my mom worked. I got paid minimum $6.75 and it was boring. I was the phone operator and i had to file stuff the whole day.

some of my friends,who are 16, have been working in Ralphs and Albertsons. I think you should be able to get a job even tho ur 16. Btw, who cares if ur the only asian there. You are there to make money. Period.
 
Don't work fast food. I worked at K Roger when I turned sixteen. Not sure if Ralphs is a super market, but if it is go for it. It was fun. Only thing bad is the union thing. Starting out at low wages, then on top of that the union dues they take out, it all sucks. I don't think it's worth being in a union if your a bagger or clerk anyway. Most unions are pointless moneysuckers.
 
I delivered pizza for a couple years, pretty easy work and you can make some good tips that I never paid any taxes on
 
My first job was at Hallmark. One of the big ones at the mall. Before you all laugh and snicker, it was nice! I was the only guy there and when I worked, it was with nothing but high school girls (I was 16 at the time so that was ok with me). During Christmas, all the college girls came back to work and that was fun, too!

I don't think Hallmark usually hires guys, especially not teenagers but I got lucky as the manager was quitting and he hired anyone who walked in and asked cause he wanted to take the store down before he left.
 
My first job was at the Kay-Bee Toys in our local mall. I was sixteen, and earned minimum wage, which was $4.25 at the time.

If you have a couple of teachers or other adults that aren't family who are willing, make sure to use them as references on your job applications. I got my first job because the manager at Kay-Bee's went to high school with my drama teacher, whom I had listed. He recognized the name, which made him notice my application as opposed to all the others.

It's polite to ask someone before putting them on an application, though. I didn't know that at the time.
 
my first "real" job was at a krogers as a bagger which wasn't too bad..... it didn't take me that long to find one either I got hired there about 2 weeks after I tunred 16

My first job was at Busch Gardens of Tampa Bay, I was working as a lifeguard at the water park and earned $7.75/hr.

My second job, which I am currently working at still, is as a bus boy and food runner at a seafood restaurant making anywhere from $7 - $12 and hour (my hourly wage is $3/hr.)

I recommend trying to get a job at a restaurant, because that way you can easily become a server when you turn 18. And if you get a position with tips, you can save your checks and use the tips as spending money. Before you know it you'll have hundreds, maybe thousands saved, and have hundreds of video games and other stuff. It's great.

Its not that bad, they'll take a lot at first and call it "initiation." After that it turns to "dues" and is about $5 a week.

I'm glad the grocery store I worked at didn't have unions, it was Winn-Dixie.
 
It varies on the amount they take, depending on which union it is. If it's only $5.00 a week it doesn't sound like much, but add that up. About $20.00 a month, $260.00 a year. Not worth it IMO. I would look for a comparable place to work that doesn't have a union. Unless of course the union job pays more and it all balances out in the end.

so what did you end up doing? how was the job? would you recommend it to others? do you still have the same job/
