Hey, I am trying to get Xbox Live. My parents were ok with it before I told them that you need a credit card number that is. They then freaked out and said no, they wouldn't give me their credit card number because someone could easily steal it. They then launched into the talk about credit fraud and crap like that.

What am I going to do, I really want Xbox Live, but my parents dont think their credit card number is safe. Can anyone tell me how they keep all your information safe and stuff. And what are some ways I could get my parents to let me get Xbox Live?

Thank you so much!

Tell them it is only sent once, and it's no less secure than making a purchase with their credit card at an actual store - probably more secure, since there are people at the store that could maybe see your numbers and write em down if they were really so inclined. The card number is not stored on the XBOX, only the last 4 digits. Someone could 'easily steal it' by breaking the security of the largest computer-related company in the world? Ok. Personally, I'd trust Microsoft with my CC number over some random place in the mall.

Anyway, how old are you? Go open a checking account and get a debit card. That's what I use for all my online purchases. And really, if you're scared of fraud, just get $150 and put it in that account, and then spend it on a year of XBOX live. Then you have like $100 left over for the 'minimum' balance -- most places require this for the first few months, at least. And if someone takes the time to steal your debit card number somehow, and they get that $100, big deal.

I agree with Dusty. Just get a debit card from the bank. Shop around, my bank has no mimimum balance at all, even when I first opened the account.

Tell them they're paranoid. Why? Because they are. Transmitting credit card information over a secure internet connection is much safer than phone or mail orders.

I hate paranoid people who won't give CC info to legitimate businesses like Microsoft, Amazon or eBay. When I worked as a customer service rep for Amazon, people would always place their order and then phone in their credit card number. They just don't understand that the CC number goes directly into the secured computer without anyone verifying it by hand. On the phone, you've got possible wire taps, the rep on the other end of the line might be a crook, and much more possible problems.

LOL. Once you start using that laggy service known as Xbox Live this quote will have a lot more meaning to you Spector

[quote name='Ericnmel99']or if you dont want to open a banking account, i know my bank carries cash visa cards. you can buy them in different amounts, $20, $50, $100. Their sort of like a cross between a gift card and a CC but you use them just like a CC. Heres a link:

I've heard you can't use those for Live (as it requires a credit card mostly to ensure you're 18 (or have your parents permission), it somehow doesn't allow Visa cash cards to work. But... I have no proof of that.

I set my account up with a Visa Debit Card and it worked fine. I have never had any lag or been disconnected from Live and I have had it since it launched.

Yeah, subscription cards, but you still need a credit card number. Thanks so far guys, I'm gonna talk to them right now!

www.simongiftcard.com you can get these at local malls or on the website. Its basically a prepaid credit card (like a debit card) but can be used where ever visa is accepted. It works for XBLives verification purposes

They probably just want you having it... that is the stupidest thing i have ever heard. If you wont use your credit card then you dont deserve to have one. Tell them that you can turn off the premium content tab in the xbox live service. It doesnt make it any safer but it does say that your card can not be charged for any additional fees for things like new tracks, cars, levels, etc... Since parents usually dont understand video lingo maybe you can deceive them with that. And no, I am not a bad son, I just think parents are hard headed about things they have no idea about. I hope when I am 40, I am still in touch with current technology.

Yeah, thats just it. They dont know anything about it so they are weary to give their information and stuff out there. They are starting to crack I think because I am giving them some good reasons about this. Thanks everyone!
