It won't read Shenmue. I've finally got the time to dedicate to the game, and my DC won't freaking read the disk.... All of my other games work. I thought I might have had a bum copy, so I bought another copy and that won't read either. It goes to the white Sega screen and then sends me back to the Dreamcast dashboard. So uh, yeah... Help?

Don't return that copy of Shenmue the same thing happen to me also.I recived a mint condition Shenmue for Dreamcast and dreamcast have a hard time detecting all 4 cds.I was supious that not even one cd will boot.I did a little research and found out that older version of dreamcast won't read several game properly.I try my friend dreamcast and all the cd work with no problems.

I know model HKT-3020 won't work thats the version I got

Ah, I too have an HKT-3020. But what I don't understand is, I've played the game on the system before. Why it won't work now is beyond me... And I'm sitting on two copies of Shenmue, so I figure return the extra and get a different DC game. Also, is there any way around this problem? I'm dying to play this game......

I remember someone in gamefaqs say use a boot disk or use a program. You can try cleaning you lens I doubt that will work.It is strange that the other dreamcast game works while shenmue doesnt

I feel your pain. My Shenmue Disk 1 is dying. I can't get past the part where you first feed the cat without the game freezing. I guess I will have to get another copy. I hope my Dreamcast isn't dying as well.

Is there any other way? I'm so illiterate when it comes to using boot disks or other methods of "hacking" per say. Maybe the lens needs a cleaning, but still... all of my games work except Shenmue. Meh, I'll click around google and see what I can find.

I have a problem like that too....either the game wont start or it will work for awhile and freeze at some point. Once it was at a loading screen for 10 minutes before I turned it off, and another time the controller just quit working...the game wasnt frozen or anything, the controller just stopped working...

Does the discs have any scratches? Even though most usually play even though it scratched, if it heavily scratched near the center(the bootup section of the disc) that mess the copy up.

I went through 3 different copies of Tony Hawk's Pro Skater at Gamestop when they cleared out all their DC games. The only problem was exactly the one you're having, it would get to the Sega copyright screen and then go back to the dashboard. Some games just have problems reading on certain models of DC.

Nah, the disks are in great shape. I got it to play a few months back, but I racked the game once wrestling season started(no time for video games, and I don't want any distractions...). And I tried another copy of the game and it did the exact same thing. I think it might just be my Dreamcast is crapping out... but I duno, it can play back ups/cd r games but it can't play Shenmue.

Hey, my Jet Grind Radio started doing this! Here's what I do:

1) Put in game, and let the thing load through as far as it'll go.
2) Turn off system.
3) Unplug power cord from the back.
4) Re-plug power and turn back on.

I don't why, but it works. At least for me.

I've gone through the opening of Shenmue 5 tmes already, and the furthest I've gotten is right after the cat part at the beginning before the game fails me...is it worth trying again or should I just give it up?

It's working again.... magically. I was going to try out what DuelLadyS suggested, and it loaded perfectly. Thanks for the help, and I'll probably post back once it stops working again...

Okay, it loaded up, I left the room to take a leak, returned and it was frozen. Now I'm back to page one. I'm displeased again....... Oh well. And I can't get DuelLadyS's trick to work either :(

Aww man no way...crap I just bought a Dreamcast i better read Shenmue I ordered it off ebay, if not I'll kill Mi SELF!!!!

I have a couple of games that are absolutly perfect, not one scratch, that will not play. Doing exactly like you described, tries to boot then goes to the white dreamcast screen. I have four dreamcast's, and it does that on all of them.
I have over 50 DC games, & all the rest play perfectly.
