I need help with Rock Band for Wii

I received Rock Band for Nintendo Wii as a gift. I have the entire guitar hero band set. Upon trying to play the game using only the guitar (again its a guitar hero guitar), the guitar was recognized by the wii during the menu. I was able to control the cursor using the analog stick on the guitar. When the game started, the guitar was not recognized by the game and it only recognized the controller and would only let me use the microphone. What do I need to do to get the guitar to work with the game.?

Is this Rock Band, Rock Band 2, or Rock Band 3?

Rock Band 1 does not recognize the guitar hero guitars.
