I need some opinions for my geeky costume.

I know it's a ways away, but I want to start preparing for Anime Boston early, so, I need to begin my hunt for costume material. Yes, I will be in costume, like a huge geek. I need some opinions.

I want to go as 'Beat' from the Jet Grind/Set Radio games, but I can't decide which model looks cooler, the Jet Grind Radio model, or the Jet Set Radio Future model. Help me decide.

I think I like the Jet Grind Radio model better, but I'd still like to get some opinions.

I like the original model also. The second looks too fake or regular clothing altered to be some sorta thin skate boarding armor. The original looks easier to make.

Also how is it a geek to dress as a certain character.

Jet Grind Radio. It'll probably be far easier, too. Silk screen a plain yellow shirt, and find some glasses to modify.

I'm not too into cosplay, though I appreciate originality and when it's done well. Kudos to you for not being yet another Sephiroth.

JSRF looks retarded, what is up with those screws in his head? The shoulder things also look dumb. They just took the look too far, the first one is cool and not outrageous.

Yeah, I really tried to find something that hadn't been done before. I did find two pictures of people dressed as Beat at some convention, but they both did a terrible job.

Here's another great Jet Grind picture. I'm still working on finding a better JSRF pic.
I hope you have an old pair to use then. They're expensive. Wheels are cheap though.
Don't worry, I'm prepared to spend some money on this. I want it to look perfect. Is it possible to just take the middle wheels out? I don't really know anything about skates...

BTW, here are the two terrible costumes I was talking about:

Not too bad at first glance, but once you analyze it a bit :/

This one's just horrid...

Yea a lot of people who skate aggressive don't use middle wheels. You can even buy a plate that goes in the center if you really want it to be exact. I would recommended getting aggressive skates too, the wheels are smaller and you'll have an easier time balancing on them all day.

How much do those usually go for? The plate too.

A good pair of customizable skates will run you from $150-200. Thats because they fully disassemble to change out everything. Something like this goes for about $150.

I picked those to show you because they're plain, should be easy to take apart and paint the plastic/dye the inner lining, which is also removable. You could also remove the bottom and replace it with this

That goes for about $60 or so. You could get a pair of fitness skates for less than $100, however the only part that you can change is the wheels.

heres a pic my friend took at animeexpo this year, i think they look pretty good. i wouldnt worry so much about the skates, anything over 100 bucks is far too expensive

^ That's much better than the other two, but he still got a lot wrong. Especially the hair...

Yikes. I might have to go with a cheaper alternative for removing that middle peice.

She's hot.

The difference is, what, a different shirt? I don't think anyone's going to give you bonus points for accuracy.

She is hot.

Differences are in the shirt, gloves, blades, and headgear. The JSRF model is a lot more complex and would be a lot harder to make.

The accent marks over the "hi" should both be the same size/shape.

Other than that, it looks like - a little too clean, though (but I dunno how to recommend changing that).

I thought it looked a little too clean also, I know what you mean, but I don't really know how I'd fix that either.

I don't know if the accent marks need to be changed though. I'm looking at the JGR case as I type this and the one on the right is definetly smaller. I'll try to find more pictures though.

Much, much better. That's fantastic work.

EDIT: Though it may not be relevant, that second character is looking less and less like a "to" and more like no kana at all. Since people will get the reference, however, it may be moot. It still looks great.

Yea I had a feeling stylizing it would make it lose its meaning/look less like intended. I think it would look nicer on a shirt all graff like. Whipped it up real quick, if I was getting paid though it would have been gorgeous ;)

Wish I had a scanner. ^

OP you might actually just wanna get the shirt airbrushed by someone instead of doing the screen print route. If you just show the artist the symbol I'm sure they could whip something nice up real fast.

More of a graff feel.
Wow! That certainly kicks the shit out of mine! Thanks!

Where could I do something like that?
