I Need Some PS2 RPG Suggestions

thegame310

CAGiversary!
I am a total newb to RPG's, in fact I have never played one RPG (cept for PSO on DC which I still play to these day and I love) I mostly play sports games... and they just lose there appeal after awhile, any good RPG's or any other games you guys can suggest?

Thanks alot

A Newb CAG'er

The Final Fantasy series is pretty much the best introduction to the genre there is... I'd go for FFX... it's cheap and it's an excellent game (though it seems to be sort of love it or hate it among RPG fans.)

Yea I agree... people are going to come in and start recommending some crazy hardcore stuff like Shin Megami Tensei or Disgaea or something, but just stick to FFX (or any Final Fantasy game), those games are always easy to get into and get your feet wet.

Dragon Quest 8 is a good one to start with. Simple yet fun battle system and fun overall....nothing too difficult.

Whoa, no way. The game has spots where you really have to level up and there's some pretty difficult fights even early on... people new to the genre would probably be crushed at the first boss.

All RPGs require you to level up if you have difficulty with a boss, unless you actually have to think about a strategy... or be lame enough to look for a walkthrough.

I agree. Dragon Quest VIII isn't exactly easy. I have played a bunch of RPG games (I guess 50% of the games I have played are RPGs) and I still struggled with a few boss fights in DQVIII. The first real fight with Dhoulmagus was a pain in the ass, at least for me. I guess my characters were just not strong enough (even though I could crush the regular enemies in the area with ease). It took me three attempts before I give up the fight the boss fight temporarily only to run around aimlessly leveling up my characters (I hate games that force you to do that).

Shadow Hearts Covenant, and Suikoden V

As for Final Fantasy X.. I don't get the hype. It's nothing but walk from A to B as you follow the arrows on the minimap, and watch the cheesy storyline at between the A's and B's.

Dragon Quest VIII. Fun game, but not the best choice for a first RPG.

Good RPGs to start with:

Shadow Hearts
Suikoden
Final Fantasy IX

I would agree with the rest of these fine CAGs.

Suikoden 3 or 5 are good. The Shadow Hearts series are very good.

If you are just starting out FFX is a good place to start. (Especially if you enjoy watching movies)

Suikoden 3 has a wretched battle system and the story only really shines if you've played Suikoden 1 + 2 (imo, anyways).

Someone said FFX is very linear and has alot of movies, well, that's perfect for a starting RPG. The battle system is easy to get into yet pretty fun as well.
