... I'll be at the orthodontist's office to get four wisdom teeth removed. Joy. As of midnight, I can't eat or drink anything, not even water. I doubt I'll sleep much; not because of what's happening tomorrow, but I just haven't slept much this week, and I doubt tonite will be any different. At least I get to spend a week off work while I recover on super-meds.

Anyone else got some wisdom teeth stories?

Is there a reason you spell it "tonite" instead of "tonight," or are you just that much of a fag?

Sorry, that was rude of me, but you're an easy target.

All I know is that I have 4 wisdom teeth, and all 4 are sideways. They're gonna eventually come out. Damn evolution not being thorough enough.

My time with it was fine, I was ready to go out by that evening, though I had to stay in bed. My friend, on the otherhand, woke up during his surgery so they had to double dose him... he slept for like 48 hours after he got home.
All I know is that I have 4 wisdom teeth, and all 4 are sideways. They're gonna eventually come out. Damn evolution not being thorough enough.
I had 4. They actually came in upside down, meaning that the bottom row came in point down at my other bottom row teeth. The surgeon said they were the worse wisdom teeth he had seen in 10 years. I woke up halfway through and could feel them digging through the flesh in my mouth. I vomitted blood for a day after. Other than that it was great.

The day I got my wisdom teeth out was the same day that Street Fighter the movie came out. I saw the movie literally right after I got out of the orthodontist. Needless to say, the anathesia helped numb the painful memory of that godawful movie... although at the time, I though it was just my gums.

I went through that a couple years ago. Of course all of mine were completely out when I had it done.

I never touched my meds (hydrocodone), they're still sitting here in my desk.

Mine grew into my jawbone into the hinge so to speak. So I have to have them surgical removed. They hurt from time to time and when they hurt they fucking hurt. So I decide to quit being a pussy and get it done in the last weeks of may. My work insurance was going to pay for it cause it was covered. So I got everything planned out and I get fired in the middle of April. So I get to deal with my tooth pain from time to time for at least 8 months. 2 months w/o insurance and if I get a job say tomorrow most places make you wait 6 months or 3 months before you get insurance. Correct me if I am wrong.

Mine as well. They look like they're headbutting my jawline.

My wisdom teeth removal was relatively uneventful (which is always a good thing). I hate doctors offices and I hate needles. They put me to sleep with a needle in my arm, and all I remember thinking before I passed out was "For christ sake, let me pass out quick or I'm going to vomit" (I really really hate needles). I felt the cold move up my arm and to my chest, and then all I remember is waking up in a wheelchair when it was over. Just be sure and use the special mouthwash they give you to prevent infection and pray you dont get a dry socket. Other than that, give it a few days and you will be fine. It feels really weird being able to stick your tongue in the holes once the teeth are gone.

On a side note, they had to break one of my wisdom teeth in order to remove it, and I guess a small fragment remained in my gums... after a few weeks it worked its way to the surface and I was just able to pluck it right out.

Have fun!

*edit: I also learned from this experience that I don't know what the fuck the big deal is with vicodin...
Just be sure and use the special mouthwash they give you to prevent infection and pray you dont get a dry socket.
Yeah, I was talking to my friend's mom about it, and she warned me to follow the after-care instructions word for word. She didn't, and she had 2 dry sockets.

fuck...I just remembered I have to get mine removed...and if your nervous, well lets just say I dont see a bright horizon

Wow. I'm really hoping that i'll never have to get mine removed. I don't want to deal with that sort of pain! I've had teeth pulled before and whatnot (a baby tooth absolutely refused to come out, leading to one tooth I have coming in fucked up, I should probably consider going to the dentist about it), but I never want to get my wisdom teeth pulled.. different for everyone, I guess. Both my mom (49) and brother (27) still have theirs. I hate the dentist.. every single one i've ever had has been stupid. I've been told to swallow the flouride.. literally, I went to a new dentist after moving away from Nashville and she told me to swallow the flouride.. a whole fucking cup of it.. god that was nasty.

I wonder if the pain's any worse than when I had my surgery for my hernias.. I remember hurting so bad prior to surgery that I couldn't stand up and I was in bed several days post-surgery.. never took a painkiller at all. I don't know why. I remember hurting like a bitch but I never, eve took a painkiller.. like I have something to prove to someone by not taking one or something..

Mine was pretty wild. They gave me the shot and a few minutes later asked if I could feel anything still. I said yes I could so they gave me another shot, then waiting. Went to check on me again, I could STILL feel it. At this point they couldnt give me more as Id had 2 full adult doses (and I wasnt a big guy at all) It wasnt awful but just kinda scary they doubled me up yet it didnt work as planned.

The proceedure itself isnt so bad for most people. If your dentist saw them early and you didnt delay having it done, it really can go extremely smoothly. Its those people who put it off they have it the worst. (or those whos teeth are impacted but, again, small % of the population. Your dentist would have warned you by now if it were so)

Recovery is really an exercise in preperation and following directions., The prepping is simply making sure you have enough supplies to get you through the week. I suggest the following.

Lots of flavored and unflavored water. The first few days I suggest sticking JUST to straight water as much as you can. You DO have an opened wound in your mouth and most drinks are salty.

Pudding/applesauces/soup and other mushy consistancy foods. You arent going to feel up to chewing a lot so these will help. Also, do your best to give yourself a variety, hot AND cold. I found I was missing warm food a lot because I couldnt have any (and hadnt thought Id want any since it was summer)

Follow all instructions and take all medications as directed. I was trying to be macho and not use the drugs. I managed ok for a couple of days then after one nap, holy hell did it hit me. Nothing wrong with medication. They give it to you for a reason.

Rinse, rinse, rinse, and rinse. Keeps it hydrated and clean in there. Last thing you want is dry socket or some sort of uncomfortable rawness.

Do you best to keep to a fairly usual routine. Dont worry so much about WHEN you do things (if your tired, sleep) but dont stay in bed constantly "because Im sick its ok". Im a firm believer in if you act sick, you stay sick longer. So, do get dressed for the day, take a shower, shave (if you can) etc, etc. Also, I highly recommend getting outside for at least a walk around the block. It really will help your overall mood (which helps your body)

And thats about it. The only other stuff is common sense (dont stress yourself out, rely on other people if you need help, etc)

It might really suck at times but keep in mind its really only a week out of your life. And if you get bored or needed something or someone to take your mind off it, I and all the other freaks here would be happy to help.

Take care of yourself,
SDC
What the hell is a dry socket? Or do i not want to know?
A dry socket is the loss of the blood clot that is supposed to form in the hole where the tooth used to be. The hole becomes dry and can be very painful. Not fun!

I think that you are going to the oral surgeons office...the orthodontist puts you into braces.

If most of your family doesn't get their wisdoms out, chances are high you won't either... but there's always exceptions. Mine wasn't that painful. The anathesia cut out most of the pain and I just felt tired for the next 2-3 days. The pain should've become dull by then since the anathesia has worn off completely.
I think that you are going to the oral surgeons office...the orthodontist puts you into braces.
Correct, but in our area here, they share office complexes. So, the building might say "Orthodontics" but the Oral surgeons work out of there too.

i woke up in the middle of the surgery with full sensation. immediately after i woke up, they shattered one of the teeth for easier removal. i felt it. all of it.

then they noticed that my heart was racing and realized i was awake, so they gave me more anesthesia.

My best advice is to use ice packs as directed after surgery to keep the swelling down (no chipmunks please). Also, no straws, cigarettes or vigorous rinsing..anything that creates a vacuum in your mouth or acts to dislodge the blood clot. If you follow directions you'll be out and about in a couple of days. Good luck!

I, too, remember waking up after being sedated.. well, sort of. During the removal I mentioned earlier, I was sedated.. not fully, I saw the light above me, then another light, then four, then eight, then sixteen and then about 64 with this whirring sound playing in my head.. I could hear them but could only see that damn light.. I felt a tiny prick and I remember thinking that it was the needle going into the gum.. then I remember choking on my own blood..

The dentists are out to kill me

You bastards. Reminds me the dentist wants me to schedule an appointment with the oral surgeon. And I read every single word. Every. Single. Painful. Word.

Dry socket. Shattering teeth. Waaahhh.

Relax, its not that bad for MOST people. Plus on here most want to have an interesting story which "Yeah, mine was easy" isnt.

If you follow everyones advice, you ll have the easiest go of it you can. Your teeth are how they are, sideways, straight, upside down, whatever. Worrying about how the experence will be wont change that or help things in the least.

My teeth were screwed up, needed braces more than most. But, oddly, never had a problem with wisdom teeth. The orthodontist once said that I had a very large mouth especially for my size(can't tell from looking at me, as my lip area is on the smaller side, it's just huge inside), and that's probably one of the reasons. All my wisdom teeth are in and I don't have any problem with them.

They kept me awake for my procedure. Did the whole laughing gas thing. Ya know, they call it laughing gas for a reason...and I think my Doc had dreams of being a comedian 'cause he kept tellin' lame ass jokes. Thing is, even though you know in your head they aren't funny, you laugh yer ass off. Seriously, I had tears streamin' down the sides of my face.

Recovery wasn't too bad after that first day. I did throw up once but I think that's because I tried drinking some Gatorade too soon afterwards. Never needed any pain meds...just didn't eat anything that required chewing for about half a week, went back the next Friday for them to take out whatever stitches didn't dissolve and that was that.

When my sister had hers removed it did not go well. Turned out that the part that was in the socket was way to big to be pulled and they had to surgically saw it off. She lost a lot of blood that day.

OUCH...

i had all 4 of mine cut out, had no pain afterwards, needed no pain medicine, and ate a hamburger for supper that night.

but i guess some have different results.

Hopefully it'll go like mine did. I stayed awake, only had the happy gas. I was fully recovered two days later, eating whatever I felt like. Oh, and the only drug I used was Advil. So yeah, best of luck to you.

SDC's advice/story is the one to pay attention to.

Also, when they tell you not to eat or drink for 12 hours prior to the operation, they aren't fuckin' around. I rec'd a lesser anaesthetic b/c I drank 2 oz. of water the morning of my surgery.

Which meant that, much like SDC, I was groggily aware of the majority of the procedure as it was happening to me. On the other hand, I felt nothing other than a lot of digging and crunching. Trust me, it was a good time.

I was up and about immediately after the surgery, but I kept asking (5 times or more) if I could have my teeth to take home (since all 4 were impacted, and had to be crushed before removal, no, I could not take them home). I did, however, coerce my wife (though not at the time) to take me to the toy store since I behaved so well at the doctor's office.

Ever drink half a fifth of spirits in one evening? Well, that's what you'll feel like after the procedure. Have a wheelchair or someone sturdy handy.

Who's driving you?

I have to get mine out some time this summer, but luckily for me, only two need to come out. All four are in, and none are impacted. Hell, if it wasn't for the fact that they had some cavities in them that the dentists feel would be too hard to fill and then be too hard to keep clean, I'd be keeping all four. So I imagine that this will be sort of like when I had four other teeth removed. It hurt, but not that bad. But who knows.

*Knocks on his wooden desk*

My Dad.

And hey, whaddyaknow, I didn't sleep. Maybe that's for the better, and it'll help the anaesthetics.

Had all 4 extracted the week after xmas. I waited till I was 38.

Could have gone to work the next day, but didn't.
2 days of movies and games while on Vicodin :)

Do follow the post instructions, it helps.

Been there, done that.

IT HURTS!!! IT HURTS SO fuckING BAD AFTERWARDS!!

You will be holding bloody gauze in the back of your mouth for at least 10 hours, it is the nastiest thing, pulling it out covered with spit and blood every 10-20 minutes.

Have fun :)

PS, you may want to hold off on the painkillers today and just take over the counter drugs. The painkillers can cause nausea, and combined with the nasty things you will be experiencing it could cause you to vomit, which could rip out the stitches.
I didn't take any painkillers at all, I just took ibuprofen. (still got a few days off)

I actually had a good experience. They used an IV on me and I was out almost immediately. When I woke up it was all over with. I didnt have too many issues afterwards, besides tasting blood for a while. I was so high on Vicadin for days, but did manage to start and beat Red Faction in the few days I was out. It was a new release at the time and was a kick ass game.

I had my four wisdom teeth yanked earlier this year (it wasn't fun), and the following week I was doped up on painkillers. Of course, I ended up making a couple of mistakes around the office that week and got seriously chewed out by my boss, who couldn't care less that I'd had four teeth removed and wasn't feeling great. What an SOB a-hole.

Needless to say, I left there a couple of months later after nearly six years of employment. I was long overdue for a career change anyway, but it really is times like this that you can truly see what heartless bastards some of the people you work with can be.

The Codine they gave me.... so good. I can really understand how people become addicted to painkillers. If you're lucky you'll get a good doc and they'll help you out.

gl on the procedure.

I had my wisdom teeth removed and let me tell you, be afraid...be very very afraid. I went under General Anesthesia and I kept waking up in the middle of the surgery, with no pain killers or anything...I was screaming as he pulled out the teeth in front of the Wisdom Teeth by accident. He said "Oh fuck" and jammed another IV in the other arm until I went under again. When I woke up I was missing 8 teeth and I had a hole through the left cheek where the drill slipped off and went through my cheek. He kept saying "Oh God Im sorry", but I was totally out of it and when he told me to wait in the lobby for my ride, I slipped and broke three ribs. I started puking cause of the pain and boy did the puke burn the empty sockets in the gums. It was a real scary experiance but I plan of just putting ice on them and praying this is all just a bad dream. Good luck with yours!

My wisdom teeth grew in fine. Well the 2 top and bottom on my left side grew in fine and my top on the right side grew in fine. But the bottom right side one has never showed up yet. The only thing I hate is getting food stuck in your back teeth. Now thats a bitch.

i was supposed to get mine out probably around 6 months ago...but ive been putting it off for a while now....i just dont think about it unless they start to hurt...but i have to do it really soon because they're somehow effecting my hearing....when i open my mouth up, i can hear my ears pop and i can hear better....my teeth are fucking long...not long like buckteeth (sticking out visually), but long in my fucking head....they dont hurt except for every couple of months and the pain lasts for about a week each time....right now they hurt like hell and when i touch the gums near them (gentle or hard), i get this shooting pain in my ear, like someones stabbing me right in the ear with a needle

i think ill call them now...but another reason ive been holding it off is that with my job, we don't get benefits....so its $1200 straight out of my cheap ass pocket....that's A LOT of goddamn games

I have to get mine as well. I think two or three are impacted. Scheduling an appointment this week I believe.

Only major tooth work I had was a pulling which involved a big needle into my mouth (I have no idea how I just sat in that chair and took it) and a guy with a pullin tool in my face.

Don't know what to expect out of this experience - but here's to hoping I don't wake up in the middle of it.

I had all four out at once and it was pretty uneventful. I'll reiterate the advice to get some ice on your jaws as soon as possible - a bag of frozen peas works well.

Also remember, nirous oxide is your friend. :D

the regular dentist that i have will give me Codiene whenever i want, all i have to do is tell him my teeth hurt....but i don't take advantage of it because i dont see how people can addicted to anything such as drugs or alcohol....Codiene makes the pain go away and makes me fall right asleep....nothing else....i guess i just don't know what being "high" feels like because ive never done drugs....but if ive felt it before, it's nothing that special

At least I get to spend a week off work

????

A WEEK?!? For your wisdom teeth? I hope nothing serious ever happens to you like an ingrown hair, you might be out for a month ;)

I had 2 of mine removed, the one on the right grew into the tendon of my jaw and ripped a hole through the flesh of my cheek. I had lockjaw for about a day before I had it removed. Going to an oral surgeon is the way to go. Get knocked out, wake up and its over. I hear stories of people getting infected and such, but even with the severity of mine I never had one problem and the next day I was fine.

I wish you luck, you won't need it though. You'll be fine. No biggie.

that's what im using....it would cost $1000 more to get an iv put in my arm and only $60 more for laughing gas
