In-game XMB coming![custom soundtracks,ingame xmb,etc]

There's already a thread for firmware updates.

And this is a rumor that has been circulating for a while and is completely unconfirmed.

This is all hearsay and conjecture based off an equally unreliable rumor from some random forum poster who says he has an inside source from Sony. All the information he spouts about the supposed firmware info are features we already knew were coming sometime this year, so it'd be easy to whip up some bogus post about it.

Not only do we have no information on the source or where the original post or email game from, he also tries to set himself up so that he can maintain credebility in the face of his predictions not coming true. However, anyone who maintains a food skeptical mind can see he's trying to use the the concept of confirmation bias (I think that's the term), much like a carnival fortune teller would, to give himself more credebility than he really has by stating the obvious. If the update happens and there's one or two of the features there, he can say he successfully predicted it, if it doesn't happen, he can say he warned us that these updates might take some time to come out. The only thing is, we already knew these updates were coming out this year.

Does that statment include that statment??

Yes, it does include that statement, it's not a hard concept.

Since he already qualified that statement by saying that you don't believe everything you hear on the internet. Thus, you can still believe some things on the internet. His statement was cautionary about using your own common and skeptical sensibilities when deciding whether to believe anything you hear on the internet, especially when it comes with all the giant warning flags of a bogus post.

Being a skeptic also means finding the data. Youtube recording and upload support for the PS3 is confirmed, it's already in one Japanese game, and developers are reporting that it's in the latest SDK. You could download the program off the Japanese PSN right now and upload something to youtube with it.

So do I. I am very much hoping it's true as having those features out at the beginning of Summer would be a big boost for the PS3 in the US market. Over here, one of the biggest draws for the 360 over the PS3 is the ease of communication and starting multiplayer games. Even with the cost of Live, people want those community features.

However, my big fear with in-game XMB is that all they'll be doing is messaging. If they left out invites from outside a game and cross-game invites (inviting someone to play a different game than the one he is currently playing), then they'd have completely missed the point of in-game XMB.

However, I suppose if they did make that mistake, it's still easier to send a message asking if your friend wants to play a different game, and to meet up in game. However, that's an extra step where your competitor with an already functioning.

However, to get this functionality, you have to make sure every game is developed with it in mind, which we know games haven't until recently.

This is why I don't think in-game XMB is coming that soon. However Trophy support is something that can be more easily added to a game without altering the way the game loads up, so it's the most likely candidate for the 2.40 firmware.

You know for the tropy system, and accomplishment system to work, the PS3 OS will have to be running on top of the game somehow. So the fact that they got trophys to work means that in game XMB has to be working.

Actually Thomas, the XMB OS is already running on top of the game. Notice how you get online and offline messages for friends, and message received updates?

The core system for the XMB to work over the game has been there for a long time.

oh shit... you're right. lol I forgot all about that. But for the trophy system to work, obviously they've added more workings on the OS that was already running. Just hopefully they've added.. ALL that we want to be added.

I'm like Anakin Sywalker.. "I want more power [XMB] but I know I shouldn't"

videos of it just came out today... crap but proof that there's trophy and in game xmb:

also seems like in the upper right corner we finally have date and time like a few people were asking for.

also, he's playing bioshock already?

And that also shows that it's the Bioshock port developers that leaked that footage. If the Bioshock trophy wasn't a good enough indicator. Okay, so this is enough evidence for me to start believing that it'll come out.
oh and screens:

also there will be multiple sign in available on the same console which may be nice.
By "multiple sign in" do you mean like having two Xbox profiles on at the same time? I've wanted that ever since SSHD, not to mention it's just lame when other players in games like Rock Band and CoD4 are Player 2, Player 3, etc.

It can be nice signing a friend/family to play to and rank up; however, I hate it because for some games, that's the only one I can play multi-player (and in some cases I'd prefer to not sign on another profile, like for guests who rarely come by.

So many rumors, so many grains of salt to take with it. I wonder if other people on your friends list can see your 2D trophies or can they only see it in Home.
I feel as if in-game XMB is going to break a lot of things. But thats just me.
It will. I will guarantee a few games will freeze when accessing the XMB, a few games may struggle to work on various SKUs, and other things. It will all be fixed for firmware 2.41 or 2.42. I remember when we had Firmware 1.8 (the biggest PS3 firmware yet), it had several issues with Firmwares 1.81 and 1.82 fixed.

On the other hand, there is a faked GTA4 video with what looks like in-game XMB.

I don't understand the need for people to fake something like this.

So we'll have to see in June.

In the end though, it doesn't matter all that much if there are fakes. We know these features are coming, it's only a matter of when.

The PS3 will be much improved by their additions, finally levelling the playing field between XBL and PSN, but not completely. The big thing is that it'll be free for only slightly less functionality.

Now all they need to do is change the whole account sign up and settings pages to not use the web browser, and stop developers (like Konami's ID thing) from using the web browser instead of making their own in-game forms.

I got a feeling we'll see the update before MGS4. It would be perfect timing: biggest game on the system, new bundled systems, and the features they have been promising for what seems like a lifetime.

I didn't see this listed in any of the other threads (can't seem to locate the one specifically for firmware updates), but here's another grain of salt.

If true, would be mighty interesting to suddenly have all of the 40gb units with PS2 BC. Most likely false, however, due to a number of typos and other oddities.

I say this is definitely fake. The wording is just "off" from the usual changelogs.

Sony could release firmware 2.36, 2.37, 2.38, and 2.39. But in reality, Sony never said Firmware 2.4 is coming soon, all they said was sometime this summer. Summer starts June 21st and ends in late September. If someone feels Sony is only releasing these minor firmware updates to annoy us, they are mistaken (I think their might need to be a firmware update because a few games I recently got (mostly Commando 3) is having series network issues that caused me to have to manually power my PS3 off from the back. Also, a firmware update might fix the issue there might be with some with a PSN Card.

Sony themselves never gave a date for firmware 2.4, and those complaining about Sony disappointing them, can only blame themselves since Sony NEVER gave a date over Firmware 2.4 and is staying quiet.

However, the guy who said this, is not someone I trust (He was wrong about 2.0).

Let's just say, I doubt even Sony themselves know what will come in Firmware 2.4. I believe they want to get certain features working in it, but there's no guarantee they will all make it. Why announce something when you aren't sure either.

Not you, TMK. I swear to fuckin' Christ Sony could frizzle fry his parents, mutilate his pet ferret, and even pee in his mailbox - and the poor child would find some way to think of it as either (1) a net benefit or (2) his own fault.
