The problem is I have a 30 GB iPod and my notebook only has a 40GB Hard drive so I decided to erase all the music from the library and my computers hard drive and just keep it in my iPod but now I bought one of the portable drives and i was wondering if there's a way to copy all the music onto there, thanks in advance for any help

You can't directly move your library from an ipod back to a computer.
There are some hacked tools to let you do it, but I don't know how well they work.

You'd need to rip all your music to one of the drives attached to the computer, then copy it to the iPod.
You can always back up the computer's music library to DVD-R and then delete it.

you'll have to get one of those programs arbiter mentioned. part of Apple's method of combating "stolen" music is to not let you trade or take music off your ipod. which sucks.

Have an idea, but i'm not sure if it'll work-- If mytunes lets someone see and DL the music on your ipod, that could be an option.

tsk tsk tsk.....Tis an easy question. Itunes nor the Ipod directly will let you copy straight from the Ipod, but there are plenty of Itunes alternatives that will allow you. Yamipod for one I know can do this extremely well. It's been some time since I used it, but I believe ephpod could do it as well. I know that anapod will let you transfer files from your Ipod to PC and vice versa.
