Is anyone else more into buying dvds/games then enjoying them?

When I first joined this site I went on a 6 month game acquring binge. Whether it be through buying or trading with other members. I went from having one system and about 10 games to getting every system except for PS3 and Wii and well over 100 games. The crazy part? I dont hardly play any games except for stuff thats a) on xbox live and b) my friends have.

Now I've moved out of that game purchasing phase and I'm doing the same thing with dvds. I have the mentality of "oh well it's $5.49 now and its unlikely I'll find it at such a low price again .. I better buy it". My backlog of unwatched movies is getting ridiculous. I'd say nearly 60% of my dvd storage area is movies with the wrappers still on.

I'm wondering does anyone else here feel this disgusting compulsion to continually buy games/dvds not necessarily because you want to play/watch but because you just want to have it or because you wont be able to find it as cheap in the future?

If I pay for shit, I'm going to get my money's worth.

I find it ridiculous that some members have so many games/do what you do.

i usually rent games

and i'll only buy movies that i love and will watch over and over (at least twice a year), AND when they go on sale

for TV shows, I have a $1-1 episode ratio that I try not to break. If each episode is costing me $1 or less, and it's a show I love then I'll buy it.

most movies have to be a great deal for me to buy them

last time i bought stuff i didn't LOVE was during the BB glitch for BOGO 9.99 special editions

And just to clarify my post in the OP. I wouldnt buy something if it werent something that I'd want to see in the future. For example, I wouldnt buy Beaches just because it was $5.49 and I didnt think I'd ever be able to find it as cheap. I'm talking stuff that I sorta want anyway. A perfect example of this being the fact that I just bought Bloodsport for $4.99. It's a movie that I like but I couldnt care less if I own or not ... but I figured for $4.99 why not?

I did the same thing as you with games (we even joined around the same time), went overboard till sometime in the middle of last year, then started the slow-down followed by a massive sell-off that's been going on for the last 9 months.

I've managed to avoid doing the same for DVDs, for the most part. I don't really buy that many single DVDs since the type that I get value out of my watching multiple times are few and far between. My TV season collection has grown, but I've restricted primarily to those shows that have finished their runs so it's self-limiting.

i gotcha

I think Bloodsport is a good example. While I enjoy that movie, I would just never buy it. If I felt the need to watch it I would rent it.

Stuff I lay down cash for can't be stuff I just kinda like that's at a cheap price.

Examples of movies I've purchased, Office Space, Big Lebowski, Brazil, etc...

But when I saw, say... Little Nicky on sale for $5.49, i was like 'score!'. Lots of people hate that movie but I could watch it twice a month and never get tired of it. :)

so, now it sits on my shelf.

Everyone is different though.

plus you can always sell stuff on Ebay. i do that a lot of times.

But with DVD rentals climbing, it's cheaper to buy a movie like Bloodsport for $4.99 than it is to rent it twice.

I hardly buy any DVDs (outside of TV on DVD) because I just don't see myself watching most movies more than once every couple years or so. I will occasionally buy a DVD for cheap (new or used) if I figure it's worth the cost for one watch. Games I buy because they take longer than a rental to beat and I can generally sell them on eBay for just about what I paid when I'm done.

Landing a deal on a game is a big part of the fun, but it has to be something I'm interested in playing as well or I don't bother.

I used to have the burn really bad -- particularly with DVDs.

Now it's only mildly bad.

I think you and I were seperated at birth. :) When i first started both games and movies i would watch and play them as i got them. Now i got into the "deal" groove and cant seem to stop. On the plus side Im getting great deals. i have piles of sealed games and movies bought at great prices that would take me forever to play and watch. If you figure out how to stop the compulsion let me know.

you're right

but i would never rent bloodsport more than twice a decade

i remember it well enough to watch it in my head

haha

and that value ratio is different for each person

also, i use Netflix so the $ amount per rental varies really...

damn, now i want to watch bloodsport again!!!

Then all you have to do is close your eyes, that is if you havent reached your twice a decade quota right. ;)

Well, maybe I'm missing something here, but wouldn't "enjoying" DVDs and/or games always come after buying them?
Sucks when you buy something new and you gotta rearrange everything since your stuff is all alphabetized
yeah... yeah.... me too, me too...

i have discs separated into three categories...

Films
Live Action TV
Animated TV

My time to game play time seems to be off set a lot so it feels like I'm more into buying them than enjoying them. I do enjoy getting a really good deal though. Some of the games just don't keep my attention as much as I like them to.

i keep that in a waterproof container, submerged in the tank of my toilet.. .along with my glock and some tabs of E

Yeah I have a backlog of 100+games mostly for my Xbox, but also some for my PS2/360/PC. Now I am selling the majority of the ones I know I wont play. I went game crazy and was obsessed with having the "perfect" collection that I found myself with games I knew I would never play, but just wanted to have to make my collection look good. I usualy just rent DVD's so at least I don't do the same with them.

It's all in the sport of scoring on a sweet deal. I think it's a game to obtain a video game/DVD at a price below retail and having the sentiment that a great deal was had or getting in on the cheap (penny strategy guides!)

I've got about 80 PS2 games I haven't played nor will I have time in the upcoming decade, and yet I continue to acquire GBA and DS games.

It's a blessing that systems are eventually phased out. If the PS2 hadn't come out, I'd still be collecting awesome PS1 games that would undoubtedly be in current production.

If collecting electronic/digital media was a competitive sport, I'm sure there'd be many athletes on CAG. :hot: We're a bit of junk and pack rats, though.

For movies no, absolutely not , I buy what I want to watch, a 3 dollar turd is still a 3 dollar turd when you get it home and everyone knows a bad movie seems to last forever. I don't really get much thrill from getting some super cheap game unless it was something I wanted to play at some point, I think a lot of people on this site fall into the trap of buying something they never in a million years even thought of playing one day.

I have hundreds of games. I want to play them all eventually but I may die before I find the time. I also have a stack of unwatched DVDs but it isn't nearly as bad and I'll get caught up on them once I finish school.

It's not a good deal if you're never going to watch / play what you bought, then it's just wasted money. Sure, you can say, "Oh, in the next 10 years I will definitely get to my 80 PS2 games!!" but unless you quit gaming right now and never buy a new system, no, you will never get to that many games, so it's like flushing money down the toilet.

After having my daughter born last year I've realized that time is too important. I only rent dvd's these days. Don't have the time to watch movies over again.
As for games; I am renting with gameznflix for Wii games. Too bad they don't have DS games but I buy those on sale and sell them online once I beat/grow tired of them. I use that money to buy new games I want.
I don't have money to waste anymore and not enough time to waste either. But I used to like collected movies.

I buy DVDs because thats what I collect. People collect stamps or hair clippings, I collect DVDs. I buy movies that are praised by critics so I don't regret buying what I have. Except for my Marvel movies.
Can you imagine if this were the year 2100 and your grandson finds this box filled with highly praised movies on DVDs like the Godfather.

Since you are a collector does that mean you leave them all sealed and preserved? You know like some people who collect stamps keep them encased so no air or dirt can damage them. :)

Got the same problem. I buy too many DVDs that are still in their shrinkwrap (especially tv series like Buffy, Angel, Gilmore Girls).

Not all collectors have their stuff sealed.:)

i buy movies that are praised by me. imo, most critics are completely insane. especially the more well known ones. i rarely love critically acclaimed films.

:)

also there wont be any players that will play DVDs by 2100
lol

it will all be super hi-res holographic feeds from a set top box

maybe in 2050, but in 2100 the image will be sent directly into your mind with an embedded interface chip

dude that is fucking sweet

in 2100 i'm gonna make the topic

'Is anyone else more into receiving direct transmissions of movies/games to their embedded interface chips then enjoying them?'

i predict big things for that thread

I bet by 2100 someone will devise a virus that will bring dire straights to our environment. They'll probably crush the corporations with a mild touch. Maybe even crash our whole computer systems and revert us to papyrus.

it'll be just like Mad Max

except Mel Gibson will be a lot older

i call shotgun!

I voted yes because I was like that for the longest time. Nowadays I play more than I buy, mostly due to being a poor college student, but I don't think I'll start the binge buys again. I barely even look at the deals here because I just don't care to buy anything.

This thread just got way more interesting. "2100: The fall of man"

nope, i only buy movies that mean something to me and I know I will watch more than a few times.

As for games I usually play something to death before I move on to something else.
