I'm wondering because my friend just got the FF13 Lightning Bundle and we realized that unlike the US systems, the JP system uses X for Cancel and O for Confirm. I'm going to get mine in a couple of weeks so I'm wondering if there is any way to change it so that the orientation is like the US system. This seemed to also affect a few US games as well, so it can get kind of annoying having grown up hitting X for Confirm and O for Cancel. Thanks!

Play through the Metal Gear Solid series a few times and you'll get used to it.

It's mostly likely written into the Bios/Rom/whatever if it's affecting normal US games as well.

Yea, I was kind of disappointed when it wasn't like that in MGS4. You'll get used to it, it's just one of those weird odd things but it won't take long.

If it's anything like the PSP, it's just a simple setting in the flash memory.

I think you're out of luck though, because the only way to change it on the PSP was through homebrew. Sony doesn't give that option.

Sorry for double posting, but I wanted to bump this up so the OP could see it.

Anyway, no, it's confirmed that it's not possible. The closest workaround is rewiring a controller to switch the buttons, but that could become a pain. I think you'll just have to get used to it. (Besides, isn't it only like that in the XMB, and not in games?)

Thanks for all the info guys! Unfortunate to hear that this cannot be changed. The annoying thing is not so much that the buttons are switched around, it's that it's inconsistent. In some games O is cancel, in some other games X is cancel; it gets confusing.

Actually Sony asked for X to be confirm and O to cancel for US games. Very few games used the other setup.
Wow...I never thought it was any different. (sorry, i can't really help)
In Japan maru (aka 'O') is basically understood to mean correct answer, while batsu (aka 'X') is basically understood to mean incorrect answer.

My best guess is that the reason why 'X' is used to denote the correct answer in the West is because it's commonly understood that "X always marks the correct spot (like the destination on a treasure map)".

In short, it's a cultural thing.

To the OP:
You're screwed. It's a firmware thing. Your only options are to either wait for Sony to add the option to the settings on the XMB, or attempt to upgrade the Japanese PS3 with a USA firmware (might work, might not work, might not work and brick the PS3). A rewire of the controller wouldn't work as that would then mess up the mapping of the controls in game.

IMO, just deal with it and enjoy playing on a "unique" PS3. :)

Actually, Nismobeach that sounds very logical. I've been playing FFVII with O being Confirm and X as Cancel, I thought about changing it, but I decided not to.
