(I can't believe I missed this the first time.)
Why do you think we should increase taxes because the government can't curb spending? I want to buy a new car, does that mean my employer should automatically give me a $50k raise?
What's really nice about this approach is that it lets carriers raise their fees and then point fingers at the government. These companies already make hundreds of millions, if not billions, in profit. Instead of taking this out of their already hyperinflated salaries, the CEOs just pass the buck onto customers.
We shouldn't have to pay for the company's fees and they shouldn't have to pay for the government's inability to handle money.
On top of that, what do you think will happen when all these fees and taxes start accumulating on Average Joe? He'll either have to get rid of a cell phone or cut back in some other form. Either way, that takes more money out of the economy. That is a bad thing to have happen in a recession/depression.
Instead of fixing the problem and doing some internal grooming, the government just milks us to feed it's horrendously obese labor appetite and exacerbates the issue.

And, well.. wow. How the hell can anyone bitch about increased taxes with the unfathomable deficit we're facing?
