Is Sega in trouble of being bought out?

The Sega that exists now is only a shadow of it's early-to-mid 90's self anyway. I'd love it if Sony would buy them out and put their internal studios to work on Sega IP - maybe they could convince Level 5 to reboot a real Phantasy Star series. Also, it's a shame that Sega CD and Sega Saturn games aren't yet a part of PSN. There's got to be a potentially bigger audience there than gametap. Lastly, Sonic needs to be put out to pasture so the focus can go to Sega's rpg, action-rpg, and action-adventure titles - a Nintendo purchase would guarantee more hedgehog misery.

I would see the Dreamcast to MS connection personally, but I also think buying out Sega would be a waste of money. Platformers are a dime a dozen now days, and Sonic just isn't as big of a name as it once was several years ago.

Nintendo would probably bring Sonic to it's former glory, the recent games try to be too "Cool" and "Badass" which just ruins the idea of a "Mascot with Attitude".

SEGA can get back to it's former glory...
it's just up to them to do so, and stop being so damn lazy with development.
Yakuza is a good example the SEGA hasn't lost their touch.

SEGA, Capcom, Konami, SNK, all need to come back to their former glory.
As they REALLY are mere shadows of what they all used to be.

When has Sega not been in danger of being bought out? I can't remember a time since right after the Saturn where this hasn't been the case (or close to it).
Dear Nintendo,

Please buy Sega and hire Yu Suzuki to do Shenmue 3.

I'd love for this to happen (heck, I'd love EA to buy out Sega if it meant hiring Yu Suzuki and getting Shenmue III. But, Nintendo makes money by not making moves like this.

I even wonder if Nintendo bought out Sega if Sonic would reach its former glory. My guess is that Sonic would be a joke of what he use to be, much like when the WWE bought out WCW (wrestling businesses). They didn't buy it out to make it great, they bought it for the video library and to kill it. I fear Sega would be all but finished if Nintendo bought them.

This was my first thought when I saw that other thread, as well. Like someone said, though, this has been Sega's position for years at this point, since didn't they partner up with Sammy for this exact same reason?

Honestly, though, if anyone *would* buy them out, I'd rather it be Nintendo. Obviously, the only thing worth owning Sega for at this point is the IPs, and I think Nintendo would actually treat them well. Microsoft... well... we see what they've done with Rare. Now, to be fair, Sega recently seems to have realized what they've become, as evidenced by Sonic teaming with Mario, the Sonic RPG by (expletive deleted) BIOWARE (!), Nights 2 (while a mediocre game, the heart was in the right place), and the upcoming Sega Mascots Tennis or whatever the hell it's called.

To me, that at least shows that they maybe, just maybe, have realized that they've become a joke of a company, and potentially want to fix that.

Oh, and because someone mentioned the Vince McMahon analogy of buying rivals... first, still one of the most horrbile, ego-stroking things ever... second, I just can't see Nintendo being Vince McMahon. Then, let's be fair, could anyone possibly treat Sega's IPs worse than Sega already has?

Ultimately, if someone were to buy them, that person would be a-ok in my book if they'd just give us Shenmue 3 (which, as much as I love Nintendo, would be absolutely mind-blowing on 360/PS3. Of course, this is Yu, so building a new engine would take him nearly another decade anyway, so maybe putting it on the Wii isn't such a bad idea. )

The old Sega has been dead for years. They sometimes bring out some decent software to keep them above water for a while longer, which will probably be the case again.

Honestly, I was hoping the Namco + Sega thing would have happened, even though, Namco has had some flops themselves. All of a sudden, my hopes were destroyed when Sammy seemed to step in out of nowhere :whistle2:(

Who doesn't want Tekken Vs Virtua Fighter? At the very least, it's an interesting idea.

The company to be bought by someone else. I wouldn't mind MS, Nintendo, Namco Bandai or even Capcom picking them up.

Sega isn't even owned by itself. It's no longer a separate company on it's own. Sega merged with Sammy last year, so that, I would assume, would be the reason for the poor quality of games that's come from them over the last year.

wtf is up with sega? i miss the dreamcast era sega...crazy badass games that you had to fucking wade through....

where is Seaman 2 for the Nintendo DS?
Samba De Amigo for the Wii (Use 2 nunchucks)

C'mon sega! get original again!

QFT. The Sammy merger was the worst thing for Sega.

Their main business is Pachinko machines, not videogames.

Unless Sega starts making games worth playing again, whomever buys them out (which is inevitable, I think) is only buying a recognized name and IP.

It's strange to think that, in 5-10 years' time, Sega might be held in the same regard that "Atari" is right now.

In the immediate future, whatever company buys them will benefit substantially from it, even if their titles (VF notwithstanding) are absolute tripe.

Even if Sega goes under we'll see a resurrection sooner or later. Just be careful not to get die in the next 7 years.

Honestly, I don't see how this warrants another topic on the subject. The article is based off of the news in the other topic, and all it does is introduce speculation and opinion about the news, essentially what was happening with the posts in the other topic, not something that normally warrants multiple topics about the same subject.

On the subject of the Seeking Alpha analyst, the guy does make a good point. Sega still does have IPs that, in the hands of a skilled company, could become big names. On the other hand, Sega-Sammy's acquisition trail has been a troubling as of late, and may become somewhat of a liability on the end of the acquiring company. In any case, the most likely candidates for a merger (Without a hostile takeover, unlike Sammy) are Nintendo (Good financial backing, currently on good terms with Sega), Activision (Has plenty of capital around thanks to Guitar Hero, may want to look for more IPs), Bandai-Namco (Large conglomerate with many of the same markets as Sega-Sammy, potential for cross-over ideas), and THQ (Worked with Sega in the past, may be able to spare some financial backing).
Who knows, maybe Microsoft will try to buy Sega again.
Eh, we might regret that when they release Shenmuerun; a multiplayer-only online FPS that's comes out around the same time as Halo 4.
