Im thinking about buying a psp after my old one's lcd cracked.....but i hear rumors about a newer, BETTER. PSP model coming out is this possible? or should i just go ahead and buy the current version?...is the newer one gonna have anything new other than cosmetic changes? Please reply :)

I dont think anything is confirmed, but they are considering it since I got a survey from psu asking about what I would want to see on a revised psp. color, features, price, etc etc
I wouldn't wait though, if they do make one Im sure it will be a while before we hear or even see anything about it.

I would buy a current model PSP simply for the opportunity to install custom firmware. It is far more useful as hacked hardware than it ever was as a closed proprietary gaming system.

Buy it now. New PSP rumors have gone around before the PSP launched. It's just people thinking that they'll add a battery-killing hard drive. (HDD = moving parts. Flash memory = no.)

There's nothing they could substantially add to a new PSP without making a whole new platform.

I saw this a while ago.

I actually just got a psp (refurb). I never thought I'd own a portable game system again since i am grown, but i travel a lot and once i read up on psps running emus, etc. decided to get one. I have had it for like 2 weeks, and i got it all setup with tons of nes and snes games, dvd rips, and more. I only have a 2 gb card and the going rates for pro duos is retarded. If they follow through with this I think it makes the most sense. for the psp to truly compete with things like ipods etc it needs better storage capabilities. But like others have said I wont hold my breath, i am just gonna keep rocking with this one.

Only rumored. At this point in the game Sony is much more likely to put out a PSP 2 in a year rather then redesign the system in a year.

Dudes. Think about this. The PSP has NEVER had a price drop, much less a second model. You are SAFE in your purchase REGARDLESS of when it is.
Retards, the psp is going to have a significant price drop this year.
If Sony is still selling the thing decently, they won't. At the most, it may be cut to $150. Sony would like to make as much as they can on the PSP, to offset the loses on PS3.

PSP is an awesome handheld and definitely worth the full price.

I think that before Sony releases a psp2 w/ a hard drive, they definitely need to get the online for psp up and rnning, so that it won't have to be tied up w/ the ps3 to download games. I really wish that Sony would drop the price of the psp to about 129.99, and then release the new version w/ hard drive for about 199.99, or 249.99.

Personally I doubt they'd release one with a hard drive. And I doubt the current model would hit $130 any time soon. Maybe $180 or 150 at the cheapest by the end of the year.

I think PSP should at least come with a 1 GB memory stick at its current price. $150 with a memory stick would be the best (I say memory stick because people won't have to go out and buy one).

Agreed though I wish you'd knock off the PS3 love.
Agreed though I wish you'd knock off the PS3 love.
Well, ever since the update came on PS3, I've been loving it a lot (I much rather play my PS1/PS2 games on PS3 by saving games to my HDD, along with it just being much easier to quit games by pressing the PS button instead of holding the reset button).

Well, I am happy with the PS3, so oh course I love it (In all seriousness, I never thought it would happen). ;) PSP still gets my main support though (since PS2 is started to die a little and PS3 just doesn't have a lot yet).

I'd still drop the price, and dammit, if Nintendo drops their price then the hell with it. My thing is at some point in time Sony is going to have to get consumers to believe that the psp is the better product, and it's worth it to spend a little extra to own one. I think that the psp is safe, just as long as the price isn't over double the price of the competition... like it has been.

Just ignore him. I'm pretty sure he's one of our more obvious trolls (ie, NEVER has anything productive to say). He's just looking to rile people up.

Why does everyone want a hard drive in their PSP? The UMD perhaps sucks, but a hard drive?

Do you honestly think Sony will allow it to be user replacable? Just look at the iPod, unless you baby it, expect disaster.
I think the UMD drive is great, but just needs to be faster.

People want a HDD for they can store a crapload of PS1 downloads from the PS Store.
Or they want it to store a crap load of pirated PSP and PS1 games.

Precisely! People like having innately like having a collection of games in a box.. it's quick and easy to jump in and out of various game.
I really hope that Sony can find a way to support good homebrew apps, and stop piracy (a goal from Sony's perspective)... HOMEBREW... good apps... good games... these are the things that psp has to do well.. People want their psp to do things... a hard drive 20 or 30 gb would be great.. plus you could let the psp run a linux os (like the ps3) thus giving the psp some great options.

Is Sony opposition to homebrew and aps more of a desire to limit thier liability under thier waranty? Think if someone bricked thier system because they added a program they thought was ok and now wants a replacement.

Homebrew applications can screw up your PSP, if you're not careful. Installing any Homebrew should automatically void the warranty.

The UMD drive doesn't suck, and I don't baby my iPods. I've dropped both a 3G and 5.5G multiple times with no problems (not intentionally, but it's happened). Never had an issue with an iPod.

That said, I don't want a hard drive in a PSP, and I have no idea why Sony would include one.

Not to mention, a hard drive would massively cut battery life and increase the unit's size.

I didn't mean it really sucked, just what I have interpreted from reading this forum. Perhaps, suck is the wrong word.

If the UMD was faster I think it would probably work better, but would be much better if Sony would allow affordable UMD recorders and blanks. UMD is like just a bigger capacity Minidisc. When will Sony learn?

I don't want a hard drive because

1. They are fragile
2. It moves
3. It will die someday, no matter what
3. They eat batteries for snacks

And I doubt Sony would allow it to be user replaceable. That might work, but iPod like integration is not a good idea.
The nub has to go though. That thing just ruined PSP. What the fuck were they thinking? Did they not even try to play a game with it?

I still enjoy my PSP. PSP Radio, NES, Genesis, Playstation all work almost perfectly. And there are some pretty good PSP games too. Metal Gear, Tales of Eternia, Lemmings, the 3D ports from Capcom...

And in regards to the actual topic, if there is a new PSP model it won't be much changed. They have to support the current library of games already out. So, they probably won't be adding features and most certaintly won't be removing anything.

Perhaps a new PSP system altogether like from Playstation to Playstation, but it seems too early for that.

What I don't understand are the rumors about doing away with the UMD drive all together (as opposed to adding a hard drive or flash memory in addition to UMD). How does that make ANY sense at all? That's not PSP2, it's a completely new platform, since every single game produced prior to the change would be incompatible with the new hardware. Anyway, I could see them adding a hard drive theoretically, but part of me thinks that they won't, since it would reduce sales of memory sticks and would also probably make the device bigger and *more* expensive, which is just what it doesn't need.

I doubt that the UMD drive is going away anytime soon, as Jack Tretton hinted at its revival (with lower prices) in the future as they educate studios that charging more for UMDs (even UMDs of movies nobody wanted) was a retarded move.

UMD as a movie format isn't related to UMD as the PSP's format. There's always been this bizarre thing like that UMD's are somehow bad if there aren't UMD movies...like that has anything to do with anything. (By that logic the DS is a complete failure  )

I like the PSP's analog stick. It's responsive and works well in most games I've played. I'd like a second one, but to an extent it's just developers being lazy. The PS2 was the first system with standard dual sticks, and on consoles we had six full years of 3D games with no or only one stick, yet people act like it's impossible to make a 3D game without two.

And UMDs...geez. I don't know what the transfer rate is, but if you can stream stuff off in a real Grand Theft Auto game, it's clearly not unusable, and it wouldn't surprise me if it's faster than a PS1's drive. And geez, it's a friggin portable with an optical drive! It's the first one ever, and it works! That's amazing, yet the PSP keeps getting irrationally bashed-even though it's a generation more advanced than the next closest portable.
