Is this laptop worth it?

If you want it for gaming the NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GS blows. Other features like 3 gigs of ram, 500 gig harddrive, 17 inch screen or a blu ray player are unecceray and expensive. What are you using it for?

Unneccesary, maybe, but I still want em.

Id be using it for music production, school, usual online stuff and some games here and there...

Saw this one too, but its a fortune: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834117592

Well, if he wants a Blu-ray drive in the machine, he would be hard-pressed to find anything much cheaper. It's an awful lot of money to spend on a disc drive, but if he wants it, he wants it.

Good point.

Though why not go with a cheaper laptop and a PS3? :D

not sure what your looking to spend... but as a general rule I HATE dell and gateway... I run a computer repair shop and I see so many dells in there with blown motherboards its uncanny. Gateways arnt' too bad, but if you have a problem their support is by FAR the worst I've ever had to deal with.

I'd configure something on HP's site (they do custom builds), its probably your best bang for the buck in a name brand computer.

Im not really interested in name brand, as long as I like the design of the laptop and its powerful, Ill get it. Besides, I like standing out of the crowd.

And I have a PS3. I just want the BluRay drive for putting files on to play on my PS3 and such.

[quote name='alexandertyler']Might want to try here, they specialize in all kinds of higher end and production quality notebooks. The also have models for the budget minded buyer. I highly recommend.

I would also recomment that... A friend of mine just purchased a high end laptop from them and loves it.

and do not buy a 8600M! I have an 8600M GS in my hp and I have to overclock it to get decent performance on tf2 and ut3... go with a go 7950 or an 8800M. more power and with the later dx10 support (also on the 8600M card but at the cost of the power)

3 gigs ram isn't good or bad, ram is pretty cheap, and as long as you have 2 gigs vista should be fine for games.

blu-ray is a really expensive option... only get it if your really going to use it a lot... (make sure you have an HDMI port for using with a big screen tv as well)

2.0 ghz dual core processor should be fine as long as you have a good video card to back it up. I have a 1.5 ghz dual core and it gets the job done but 2.0 would be ideal for gaming.

Good luck finding the right laptop, I thought I had the right one but 5 months later the 8600M is showing me how weak it really is. oh well I'm going to build another gaming desktop in a year or two anyway.
