Is xbox system link cable just an ethernet cable?

do you have to get an xbox compatible cable to link machines, or will an ethernet cable from my computer work just fine? I assume they could make more money if you have to have a special one, but maybe its just nice and simple.
thanks :?:

It's [the Xbox link cable] ethernet cable, yes, but it's a crossover cable, not patch.

You need a crossover cable to connect xbox to xbox. You use patch cables if your xbox is hooked up to a switch/router.

I'm gonna have to say no on this one. The cables are completely different. First off, the System Link cable is in Xbox green, so it matches well with your xbox controller S cables. Secondly, its more expensive which would mean that its most likely got a higher rating. Higher ratings are good. Everybody loves higher ratings. Microsoft and the crew for Queer Eye would appreciate it if you bought their cable, and it matched your other cords. Fashion has a price people.
if you are looking for one for cheap, the Toys R US near me has them for 7.50
Cheap??!

That is ridiculously expensive, go to your nearest electronic or computer store and pick one up for $1.50

I am talking about the official system link cable

Just buy a cheap CAT5 cable. I had an old uber-long crossover cable sitting here that I "un-crossover-ized" and I've been using it for months, not problems. You're just paying for the name.

no way man the monster brand system link cables are the best

They are nitrogen injected and sealed for noise free connections. Which is even more bs than their video or audio cables cause a digital connection is 0 or 1 so noise isn't really a problem. But if you got money to burn check out your pc store and buy a crossover cable then send the extra money to me.

ya, monster cable is worthless. IMO a long crossover cable is pretty worthless. Here is what I do. I made a 1 foot crossover cable. Then I bought a inline couple. I then hook the crossover to the inline coupler and then to a patch cable that is the length that I need.

Im suprised microsoft didn't make the network on the xbox be autoswitching. Alot of the newer mobos and nics let you hook two computers together with patch cables
