Japanese PS2 games on the American PS3

Will Japanese PS2 games be playable on American PS3's? Will the PS3's region-free attribute apply to PS2 games?

There are Japanese PS2 games I want to play, but don't want to have to buy a Japanese PS2 just for that, or a modded PS2.
 
AFAIK, you wont be able to do it. The region coding allows for the developer to choose, and unfortunatly, the default option is locked. I cant remember where I got that from, so dont take it to heart... but it sounds about right.
 
not a single person has ever said if that would be the case or not.... the fact that dvd movie region codes can be bypassed on the ps2, action replay, but not games,unless you chip it or use a method to fool the dvd drive (ie swap magic). the game region detection appears to be hardware (system bios) based...

we may have to wait when review systems start to hit... or maybe wait until the system is released to find this out....
