Jews are bad people

I was stunned when I saw that. Normally, I don't give too much thought to what some old dude in Italy thinks but saying gay marriage is part of "evil" is absolutely INSANE.

I think calling something "evil" falls a bit outside of the bounds of "disapproving of a behavior" especially when there is a long-standing notion that Christians are called to fight evil.

He's saying it's part of a larger social evil (homosexuality and abortion are both part of it) that threatens to destroy the family structure of society. I'm not Catholic, but given what's happening and their religious viewpoints, I can certainly understand this point of view coming from the church.
 
His choice of words may be a bit harsh and blunt (and taken somewhat out of context of course), but it's hardly gripping front page news that the catholic church and its leader is opposed to gay marriage. Nobody should really be all that shocked or stunned by this. I probably would never had said it, but had he said something like all gay people are part of evil or are evil or something else like that I'd see more cause for concern. Similar to what elprincipe said, many religions (catholicism often included) look upon many ideaologies as either good or bad/evil and the catholic church sees the idea of gay marriage as bad along with many other religions. If he said gay marriage is a bad ideaology would it make everyone feel better? Keeping in mind it means the same thing and just really using a nicer word?

As for the abortion thing, he wasn't exaclty making an SAT analogy or saying X number of people died in the holocaust versus X number dying from abortions. The holocaust was an extermination of human life and I think he was trying to point out how the church sees abortion as an evil & legal extermination of human life as well, etc. Once again, not really a comparision I personally would make in the same situation, but I do not think it makes the pope this horrible, dark-hearted person everyone should hate or anything like that.
 
It was just so blunt, that's what caught me off guard. Though, if any public figure but the pope said that he would have been condemned, and he would be hated by all those who support gay rights and choice. But, since he's the pope, he remains above all that. Again, if anyone else voiced those opinions he would be despised by gay rights and choice supporters.

Though, in the world of religion, there is a difference between just "bad" and "evil". Bad is not just nicer, but it is, essentially, less bad.

Also, comparing abortion to the holocaust tends to be something seen in the more extreme anti abortion groups. You can't compare the (in their words) murder of individual babies to the attempt to exterminate entire groups of people (jews primarily). Maybe in a numbers game (I have absolutely no idea of the number of abortions performed), but no one is attempting to eradicate babies.
