Job choice: Clothes or electronics?

I never had a job before.. and I want to get one while I'm going to college (possibly freshmen year). Anyone have any recommendation for what kind of job I should get? Or should I get a work study in college?

I'm not too familar with both of them. All I know is that GS/BB seem to suck.. (apparently). I haven't heard anything harsh about clothes except it's like a chore you're getting paid for. I don't want to work in food really...

If I am to get a job while I'm in college.. what would you recommend?

More into the clothes dept.
or the games/electronics?
or not get a job and get some kind of work study/internship.. ?
or just not work and go towards my major and eventually I'll get something?

Or what jobs should I stay away from?

But I guess you should work in electronics/games...assuming you enjoy that stuff...I dont see clothes being fun at all to work in...
 
Go for clothes, its alot better than gaming and crap like that. By far the best job around my area though is the running the carousel at a mall around here. 7.50 an hour to sit there during the week and do homework/read/whatever. They get really busy in the weekends though. One of the girls that works there told me she gets thousands of people to ride during the weekends.
 
My exgirlfriend used to work at Kohl's (clothing store). She enjoyed it, and worked there for a couple of years. Mysteriously, after we broke up, she told me she quit because "she had to get out of there" -- I don't remember the reason why, because there was no point in listening or caring about what she had to say. I don't know if it working in clothes turned out to be bad, but she loved it at first.
 
Working at clothes stores has the major downside that they want you to be wearing whatever thier latest overpriced crap is, so they expect you to re-wardrobe every few weeks, out of your own pocket, and giving only a meager discount on their product.

Using mall stores as an example, if you worked at a place like Abercrombie and Fitch (Eddie Bauer, Polo, etc), you'd get paid just north of minimum wage ( 6-9 dollars and hour), and then have to make sure your wardrobe is updated and current with the season and products the store is selling, so you'll often end up having to drop a couple hundred dollars at the start of every season just for your work clothes.
 
Suck it up and work with food. Everyone hates work anyways, might as well hate to go to something you hate. Honestly, Waiting or being a room service guy or whatever is the easiest way for a teeneger to make a good amount of money. While I was in high school, I worked at a Holiday Inn as the bellman/room service guy and that job was awesome. Not only did I get a view of the beach at all times, I made like 15- 20$ an hour off tips, hooked up co workers, got crazy tips (alcohol...other illegal substances) and got to entertain all the girls who would come to the beach on vacation. I would still work there when I go home for breaks if the stupid hurricanes didn't knock the hotel over.

WTF.. clothing stores MAKE you buy there up to date shit so you can work there but pay you crap? oh I can hear your boss say "you have you wear our latest clothes because research shows that when they see how good it looks on you they will buy that and more!"

Electronics is ok... as long as you don't have to *push* for extended warrenties OR the company's credit card. avoid places like best buy, target, radio shack, cc, compusa and you should be ok. Also avoid commisson paid jobs. Although the more you sell the more you make sounds intresting, its just creates too many problems like bad competion between co-workers and if people dont buy crap during your pay period prepare to take home crap. Retail has a bad habbit of overworking you and paying you crap, then threating to cut your hours for not pushing there shit (EW/CCs)

Depends on the clothing store, but I used to work at a Gap and they didn't make you buy their clothes. The only real rules were that if you are on the sales floor you can't wear shorts, anything too revealing, or anything that has another company's name or logo in a visible spot. The clothes didn't have to be current or even from the store, as long as they looked like they could be Gap clothes. You do get a pretty good discount though of 50% off full price and 30% off sale, plus 30% at Banana Republic and 20% at Old Navy. Guess it just goes to show what kind of crazy margin these clothing stores make on their stuff.
 
You're a girl, right? While I campagin (heavily) for people to not work at Gamestop, you might do a little better there because of that extra X chromosome(it'd be easy for you to work a lot of nerds into reserves/subs). However, Gamestop, for the most part, is shit. They cut your hours and benefits for no reason while expecting you to perform beyond your requirements with enthusiasm. I'd try to find something that doesn't require a bullshit quota.

I overlooked the fact you have to be up to date. This is hard coming from a person who spends their money on electronics most of the time than clothes. My friend works at a clothes place and now I remember she said all the stuff you guys mention "can't show the logo", "no revealing clothing" etc. But yea I'd always like clothes discounts.. but damn to update my closet of clothes is harsh on my wallet. That's more like one up for the electronics side.

And those are kind of nice discounts. That's why I always hate buying clothes at full price knowing it's worth so much less.

Did you ever see them again doing that? haha well for some reason.. I don't think BB will allow that... and would fire me or something... Yea I do playing with electonics and games that's why I was interested in taking a job there.

If I did work at BB.. does knowing there is some corporate BB company office building nearby do any good? MY friend said her bf worked at BB for a few months and soon was recognized to work in the corporate office. I'm saying corporate as a headquarter place for BB.

I haven't even thought about amusement. I should try that.. in the Mall of America there's a little Camp Snoopy in there.. ha I'll think about it. I always see those people bored and whatnot. I'd be tempted to wear my headset or do homework.

My friend still works at Kohl's. I remember I went to visit her during work and I helped her out a bit. All I did was fold clohes and hang them etc. A lady even asked for some fashion advice "I'm looking for a conservative top like this.. is this good?" That was kind of hard to answer, because people tend to answer their own questions. She said she wanted to switch jobs anyways.. so I'm not sure.

Stocking is simple and nothing is bad, I guess it's the easist thing to do.. but considering I have to wear some kind of updated wardobe every season is kind of a killer.

In a way I'd rather do hotel work.. but I don't think it's often you see a female do it. Sad to hear the hurricane blew it away. But food.. I can't even stand when I'm making eggs in a closed kitchen or being in a cafeteria. I'd want all the windows and doors to open so the oil and smell just go away. Basically I'm kind of paranoid of oil or something.. And now I'm really hungry.

I was thinking work study be nice.. just because my dad gave me that advice. He's the one who doesn't want me to have a job/ever get one till my 2nd year in college. I'm just trying to pay off my gas and insurance and get a few games here and there with a job.

It's kind of hard to pick what and what. I'd rather go more on people's experience in what stores here and there. My mind set is kind of Gamestop and such (also the poll has that as the highest).. but how is that and college? I want to be a full-time student, but for the first year.. maybe I should not (kind of assuming it's going to be easy-ish after facing years of IB stuff and going to take the test which makes up college credit scoring high enough). But thanks guys for the current input.. if anyone else has a say.. go ahead and speak.

I have to disagree with the female thing. GS sucks just as bad whether you're a male or a female.
 
also to work for a used game store is crap, not only because of the management, but to have people whine or get pissed because you offer 6 dollars for a game you paid 50 bucks for and for them to turn around and sell it for 39.99 used :( I've actually just browsed in a gamestop for a few mins and listen to kids just coming and and saying, can i see that game, how much is that game in the window? I really don't like there additute everytime you come in or call in with them asking you to preorder something your not intrested in buying.

here is a thought...im not promoting it or anything but here are a few ideas..

office clerk-type, copy, call, memos,fax, catalog, originize, email

work in a public school system-Dispite what people think you DON'T have to have a teaching degree to work in a school (unless you want to be a teacher). Assistants pay is so so (dont expect 40k a year) but the hours you can't beat usually from 7:30ish to around 3pmish and weekends off. No overtime. Descent days and sick leaves .

Well, I remember that when I was working there, I'd do at least 15% on my reserves everytime I was scheduled, sometimes I'd do as much 35-40%(the requirement is about 10%) I wouldn't overperform on hocking the GI magazine, but I was usually within range (a little over or under). Well, on one of those days that I was kicking ass the DM comes in and tells us the company is cutting our discount, and that I wouldn't be able to get that raise they promised me when I was hired . I was making bare minimum at the time, and they swore, fucking swore they'd get me at least $6. However, in light of all that, the jerk-face asshole tells us that we need to get our numbers up so we could "close out the quarter with a bang". I mean, seriously, what the flying fuck? I also know that they'll cut your hours for any reason, and if you're part time(which you will be, just like I was) that means a huge screwing (I was getting no more than 2 hours a week at one point). Additionally, my managers were complete bags of ass. One got fired from stealing from the company, and the other who took over got fired for being incompetent. I remember the time he left me (a lowly GA) to deal with about 100 angry Madden 2005 fans when our shipment was late to the store. Other times he would just leave for 2 hours at a time (which he wasn'tsupposed to do since I was just a GA) without clocking out so he could get high/do whatever else.
Recently, I know from my friend that they've cut health insurance for their employees. That's ok ,though, since they posted record profits! Go Gamestop team!

You're absolutely right. From what I observed though, the one female employee we had did better than the males, and she managed to get a ton of reserves by doing this thing where she'd lower her head, pop out her chest a bit, and kind of plead with her eyes when she asked for one. And some people who go to gamestores, you have to admit, just go nuts over "teh boobiez". Again, though, I agree. Working at Gamestop was one of the worst experiences I've had in the job market (and that's saying something). If they ever go under, I'll make the drive to OSU and we can celebrate with dinner and throwing rocks at the closing stores (I'm sure they have a few in Columbus). I'll buy.

I shop exclusively at GameCrazy and retail places (like Best Buy, Target, etc.)... but, the times I've been in GameStop and EB, I've noticed that - and this is every time - there are customers throwing fits. From mealy-mouthed nerds complaining and fat, middle-age women whom have no idea what they're screaming about.

Also, and this is funny to me, any time I've seen a female clerk, there has been a customer who won't leave her alone, "hitting on her" -- I put that in quotes for a reason.

Work study/internship
These jobs tend to pay very well (around here, work study jobs pay at least $10 per hour while jobs at game stores pay $6.75) and you can probably find something that can help you get experience in your major. Internships are great in that they pay really well and you get direct hands on experience with whatever you are interested in majoring in.

I regret working at a game store my freshmen year (and part of my sophomore...still working there).
 
From my experience... I prefer getting jobs at local places. Typically, the rules there are less strict and it's more of an easy-going atmosphere. If you work at a big chain place (Best Buy, Gamestop, etc...) it's more likely there will be more rules to adhere to.

I wouldn't work in a game store. I've never heard anything good about working in one of those places.

I worked at a newspaper as a bitch and got paid minimum watch. I really hated it at first, but towards the end of my stint there, I'd go to work and sit on the internet for two hours at a time. Ultimately, it turned out to be a cool job.

I worked at a grocery store for a year, and hated it. The only reason I was able to stay alive working there is because, with it being a mom 'n' pop shop, we were able to get around with slacking a lot, especially during the night. Seriously, some nights we could go in there and just sit on our asses and play games like "Spread Eagle" (a game, that's not sexual inneundo or something) in the back.

I worked at a park board and got paid to play kickball, basically, with kids for 4 hours a day. It was a fun job. Got to be outside, had very few responsibilities and I really enjoyed it.

I start at Menards on Wednesday. We'll have to see how that goes. I'm getting paid really well for around here ($10.60 on weekends), and I finally get to work in a store in a department. I've always been a bitch at the jobs I've went to, so this should be a welcome change.


I would say that the pay is usually better at chain stores, but you take the good with the bad. Like I said, expect to have more rules to follow if you choose to go to a place like that.


Good luck. If you parents are feeding you money, last as long as you can. It's not really the attractive option because, to be blunt, it makes you look kind of pathetic, but who gives a shit? As long as you can be supportive by someone else, I say do it. My parents cut me off of all income (I mean, aside from my place to live) in about my sophomore year of high school, and to be honest, it sucks. The reason I share this is because I think once you get a job, they're going to stop feeding you money, and you'll be very surprised at how often you blow money on random problems that pop up.

oh yea mom and pop stores or small business owned stores are ok, I use to work for an award store for awhile..it was ok 9-5pm m-f, 10am-2pm Saturdays. pay was meh and no insurance :(
 
Go for work study in the school library. Especially if the school has like a music library or art library type thing. Nobody ever goes into those, and if they do they'll know what they want. You get to sit and do your homework or read while you get played. You normally even get a computer with a good internet connection to play with.

If not, I've spent summers working in Target and Starbucks, and Starbucks is actually quite a nice job. It depends on which store, but most workers and managers I've encountered are decent to work with (unlike at target).
