Jobs at Gamestop/EBGames

Hey all,

I've been looking for a job for a while, hoping to avoid retail. It looks like i might end up there for a little while at least. I'd like to at least maximize my happiness while i'm there, and just wondered if anyone here had experience at GS/EB?

Have you worked there before? What was it like? Pros/cons? Recommended? Etc. Etc. Pour your heart out.

Like i said, just wanted some input about jobs at this place.

Thanks a ton!

I've not worked there personally though I was offered a job there. Unfortunately, the consensus seems to be that it's a terrible job.

The only pro is that it's a total bullshit job and you get paid to do pretty much nothing 10.5 months out of the year.

Too bad you bring down minimum wage, get no commission, and are pretty much forced to be a dick to the customers and pressure them to buy subscriptions and discount cards. Oh, and you get to repeat whatever the week's retarded tagline is ad infinitum.

Pros: Extremely easy job, get to talk about games, free rentals, discount on used games

Cons: Pay sucks, can be a lot of competition for the job, your fellow workers will be extremely lazy which is amazing since you practically do nothing anyway, you will end up spending a lot of your paycheck in the store

I actually enjoyed my time working there, but it definitely wasn't because of what I was taking to the bank.

While I agree with this, the local EB here isn't like this at all. They are friendly, speak to people like normal people talk to one another, and never push subscriptions / discount cards (only when it's appropriate, like a dude is buying 10 used games or trading in 10 games).

Yea, I know of alot of EB / GS's around here that are like you described, but every once in awhile there is a decent store out there.

I've got an app for a store right now, I'm pretty confident I can get a job there (since the manager knows me pretty well), I know the pay will be minimum wage and the hours will be nil but at least it's something to keep me busy. I never thought about working for the evil empire but this store is really cool and friendly so I'm contemplating it.

I occasionally thought about trying to get a few hours on the weekend there since I enjoy talking shop with the guys, but I would probably regret it pretty quickly, unless it is as easy as advertised. Though they probably wouldn't hire me at all just to work some weekend hours. It wouldn't be for the money, but I suppose it would cover my game purchases.

I've known a few people who work there just for weekend hours, espically during the holidays, so it's not too far fetched. In fact, they are looking for people who just want a few hours a week to help out and aren't going to want 30 + hours (which is what the manager told me).

I wouldn't mind the discount either because there are too many new games coming out that are going to be EB / GS exclusive, like SMT: Devil Summoner and Summon Night 2.

Unless they've changed it since I worked there, you only get discounts on used items.

You're a lucky lucky man. One guy at my local EB will ask me at least 3 times if I want a GPG or Edge card, and he's tried to sell me a second copy of Guitar Hero when he knows I already own it. (I talk GH with everyone there most times I go in, including him.)

my friend who works there said he receives the discount on new and used games and used systems.

seems like the easiness of the job is outweighed by the fact that you have to meet quotas for subscriptions and pre-orders, or else get fired.

I'm not sure what their requirements are but it's always sad when an employee practically begs me to preorder something just because they hadn't had any luck in the previous few days.

15% off new.
25% off used w/discount card.
Also are employee discount stacks with all the deals expect for B2G1F.

I currently work at GS. It's not a bad job at all. Yeah the hours suck right now, but I enjoy it. My co-workers are cool (except the new assistant manager, but I'm not going to get into that here), the job is easy and the discount on games is nice.

As for meeting quotas on subs and preorders, that's completely up to your manager. For example, mine is really apathetic about that. He doesn't really care. Which is why we do good in sales because people know they won't be hassled by us. Yet my friend, who transferred to an EB, says that they're anal about preorders. Plus, unless you're a manager, your quota is only like 1 or 2 preorders.

Discount is 15% off everything, even new. It stacks with everything too. Also it is nice to be able to "rent" games from the store. Saves me from buying crap like Dirge of Cerberus.

[/quote]Hours suck as in you don't get many? How are the shifts broken up there?

Our hours got cut a lot the last couple months. Hence why they suck now. We close at 9, and usually we stay until about 10-10:30 to clean up the shelves. Because our hours are so bad we can't do that. We have to leave by 9:30. Which means a lot of stuff just isn't getting done. Like properly zoning the walls.

Shifts are usually open-5pm and 5-close. Give or take 30 minutes. Weekends are a bit different since it's busier, so there's more people working. Like Saturday I'm working 12-5.
