John Stuart had HMW Eric Cantor on his show last night for an interview both about his new book and well ofcourse politics in general. The 5-7 or so minutes on the show was pretty interesting, however after the show was over they kept debating for around a half hour, all of this was posted online to the daily shows site. I have to say the interview is a good watch, they have a very respectable and intelligent debate and while Cantor a few times resorts to typical political lines, sometimes he breaks the mold and really talks candidly and honestly about a number of issues.

I wanted to post it because it really was a breath of fresh air and what political anaylsis and interviewing SHOULD be. You can watch it for free here.
This was a great interview. Cantor at his least boilerplate. I was surprised.
It was as I said and you confirmed just so incredibly suprising and pleasing to watch them try and find middle ground and understand each other without shock jock politics or scare tactics(though we did still see a small amount of giving the same silly base lines that please middle America). I would kill for this to be more then a breath of fresh air and instead be the new norm...hell even if not from politicians at least from those on TV and even here at forums that discuss politics.

Indeed it would be nice, but it doesn't sell well to the fringe. Radical lefties would want Stewart to attack the guy and radical righties want the same out of Cantor. What's surprising is that the fringe probably doesn't even make up 30% of the populace so it's a limited market to begin with...

But it's the most vocal and belligerent.

and yet again it's proven that polite conversation in this country is basically over and done with.

Pretty much. People like to paint it like its just politics but you look at people talking politics here and its just as bad, at the video game boards people get their panties in a bunch over nothing too. People could try and argue that it is different IRL, but I really do not think it is, if you disagree with something its their basic god given right to act like a baboon screeching and hollering.

I think what he wanted you to say was, "HULK SMASH! AARGH. DEMOCRAT RIGHT ALWAYS."

I keed. I keed. Calm political discourse doesn't happen in this country because one side always has to pull out the strawman or get belligerent to try and "win" the debate.

That guy has the wrong attitude and wrong direction. He basically is saying yeah republicans got kicked out, now the democrats are messing up and the republicans will make it all better.

What he doesnt get is you cant be the best at say being the manager of a restaraunt if all you can do is the paperwork, sure you can do it but that doesnt mean you can do it correctly. The best restaraunt managers are the ones who know how to serve food, take an order if they are swamped, answer the phone, seat people and be able to do the paperwork. The idea of "Were republicans and we wont make old mistakes and were gonna do it all" is as closed minded and as pretentious as the idea of being just a republican. Its going to take republicans, democrats and everyother type in between to run a country properly.

You can see how focused and single minded he is, people like that only will do or listen to what they think is what they should. They wont consider other options, they wont listen, really listen to someone elses thoughts or posistion and basically do whatever they want regardless of its a good idea or not.

Too much nit picking and subtle overtones of negativity towards democrats in the guy as well. If he doesnt like them then fine, but dont make it your basis for everything.

Not to mention I got sick of him plugging his book, everyother sentence was "If you read the book" and soon as stewart asked him a question or made a sentence that he got stumped on sure enough his reply started with "well if you read the book". Sounded like a thinly veiled commercial for the book.
