I'm just watching the Padres game and mom and dad are talking about the neighbor giving us a free 32' hi def tv. I was like wtf? Lets take it!

So we go over there, and turns out it's not a HD TV, but it is 36 inches though, which is a huge improvement over my cheap ass 20' tv with mono sound. So we're wheeling it over, and the TV slips off and the screen now has minor scratches..

I'm just like OMG.. I can't believe we just dropped this hugeass tv. So now there are scratches now. Anybody know how I can make the scrapes less apparent?

Wow, free tvs are always nice. Sucks that you dropped it. I dont know if there is a way to get scratches out of glass. If its on the sides, maybe you could use a marker or something.

Well, you can do something like smearing toothpaste over the scratches and polish with a very soft cloth. The toothpaste acts as a very mild abrasive and wears down the glass near the scratches until it is all smooth. I don't know how well it works on something like a tv or even glass, but it did a good job of reducing the scratches on the crystal of my watch.

Edit- I googled this and they say it works well on glass and mirrors, so I feel if it can work on a mirror, it should be fine for a tv.

I'll try that right now.. Thanks.

Well, I have to watch Batman Begins now.. so I'll get back to cleaning it later. Should I leave some toothpaste applied to the tv? Or is it best to apply toothpaste and wipe it off right after?

don't leave any toothpaste on the TV, the glass isn't going to absorb it.

batman begins was so awesome

i saw it yesterday. the hallucinations were cool as hell, especially one particular session of the bat interrogating burlap bag head

Firstly, pirate movies are WRONG! ;) But if you can't get the scratches out you might want to head over to a local pawn shop/electronics shop and see if you might just be able to get a new glass panel out of a broken tv.

Yeah, I'm thinking he went to a theatre to see Batman Begins.

I just came back from the theatres.. Batman Begins was fucking awesome.. I'll definitely be buying it when it's released on DVD.

Anyway, about this tv.. I applied toothpaste and wiped, but no change. This sucks really bad.

Don't just wipe. You will need to sit there and polish it for a while to get any sort of result.

He means the screen of course.

I'm pretty sure they make glass polish [for polishing windshield wiper marks off of classic car windows] . Try pricing / hunting some of it down . It may work . Better yet research it on the net .
Good Luck !
Will these Toothpaste/Glass Polishing solutions work on say, scratched CDs/DVDs?
Hmm...probably not, but if it's scratched to hell you might as well give it a shot.

I do not know about the glass polishing solution but toothpaste has been known to work on CDs and DVDs. But it has always been last resort tools.

Toothpaste is known to work for cleaning cds..

Anyway, I wiped again for almost an hour with toothpaste and no result. At times it felt like I couldn't move my fingers and they were stiff. Sucks..

I will go to a auto/repair store tomorrow to ask if they have anything to wipe out scratches.

Man, I still can't believe you weren't more careful with a big, fragile and expensive piece of electronic equipment like this. You're probably quite fortunate you didn't completely destroy it.

Then again, I'm just jealous I didn't get a free big screen color tv from a neighbor. :D

I didn't drop it.. they did. My neighbor and his son we're wheeling it over. I guess they weren't as careful because they weren't going to have it anyway. But I won't complain because it was given to me free. If the scratches bother me that much then I'll just pawn it.

The neighbor was wheeling it over in a small cart, and it just sliipped out, so I didn't drop it. I should have held it down to make sure it was more secure, though.

actually I've been reading up on it, and you have to use toothpaste with baking soda in it, preferably gel based. But that doesnt make the scratch go away, it just softens the edge so maybe it doesnt disrupt the laser so bad, in the case of CDs. It probably wont visably reduce scratches though.
I cry a little everytime I pass over this thread. It is such a bummer.
I've been having flashbacks of the tv dropping.. a whole lot since yesterday.. haha. I still can't believe it..

Really.. where have you been reading that? Please link. Every site I've went to says to use plain white non-gel toothpaste. If anything, I'll head over to big lots tomorrow and pick up another sub-$1 toothpaste and try again.

If you can feel the scratches in the glass, it's very unlikely that you can restore it to its former glory. Smaller scratches can be repaired with jeweler's rouge or a similar high-grade polish. Any kind of polishing that is done is likely to affect the screen, as many tubes have special coatings, so it will inevitably turn out to be noticeably different from the rest of the unpolished screen.

Also note that the glass used to make TV screens contains a large amount of lead in it, which is one reason they are so heavy. If you try to polish or in any way grind or sand the screen, you would be releasing hazardous lead particles in to the air, which may or may not be more deadly than the high-voltage electronics contained in the TV. I'll leave it up to you to find out, if you so choose.
