Just got a Genesis, what games are must-haves?

I bought a like-new Genesis from a fellow CAG today. So far, all I have is Sonic 2 and Street Fighter II Turbo. What would guys say are relatively the best games out for the Genesis? I guess I'm looking mostly for exclusives--stuff that just can't be played on other consoles. So no sports games, no movie-lisenced games (unless they are truly great), etc. I'm looking for games that are still worth playing today, not games that were great fifteen years ago and suck now.

I would prefer games that are actually affordable, but I will pay a decent amount if its a great game. Thanks for any help!

I had a Genesis "back in the day" and I didn't keep up with what was good or not, I just played what I liked so take these picks with a grain of salt. Also, I don't know if these are rare or not.

Gunstar Heroes
Rocket Knight Adventures
Lion King
Aladdin
Vectorman
Road Rash (that doesn't sound right, but it's something to that effect)
NBA Jam
Batman games (probably weren't good, but I was a kid and liked them)
Earthworm Jim
All the Sonics
Streets of Rage games
Mortal Kombat

I also have heard these are good:
Shining Force
Toejam and Earl

I know you said no sports games and no movie licensed games, but I still play NBA Jam whenever I visit family. I also just played through Lion King and I enjoyed it, maybe it was just nostalgia.

toe jam & earl is a must have, and if you dont have a 2nd controller get one. toe jam & earl is best when played with a friend.

It's already been mentioned, but I'll throw in another vote for Toejam & Earl. I'm not much of a retro-gamer myself, but that's one game I'd still enjoy playing today.

I wasn't crazy about TJ&E 2, though. Not trying to argue with Broccoli Storm's recommendation, it just wasn't for me. It's quite different from the original in the way it looks and plays.

Shinobi III is one of my all time favorite games. I played it again recently and it dtefinatly stood the test of time.

Sonic 3 combined with Sonic and Knuckles is the best platformer on the genesis.

Super Street Fighter 2 for the genesis is my favorite version of street fighter 2, don't know why.

Toejam & Earl is great, very good co-op.

The Streets of Rage games are great beat 'em ups so are the Golden Axe games..

Warsong
Herzog Zwei
Phantasy Star 2-4
Shining Force 1-2
Shining in the Darkness
Wonderboy in Monster World
Buck Rogers
Might and Magic Gates to another world
Streets of Rage 1-3 though 2 and 3 are the sweet spot
Super Street Fighter 2
Fatal Fury 2
Aladdin
The Lion King
Gain Ground
Comix Zone
Contra Hard Corps
Castlevania Bloodlines
Raiden Trad
Boogerman
El Viento is a legendary game
Valis 3 is decent

I love the Valis series :) (although the original Turbo versions are better) Can't believe no one has put in a vote for PIRATES GOLD! Streets of Rage and Phantasy Star 2 & 4 are legendary games as well. Also Paco, you mentioned El Viento but no Alisia Dragoon? :)

All of these are still fun today (though not all "must-haves"):
Comix Zone (also available in Sonic Mega Collection & Sega Genesis Collection)
Disney's Aladdin
Disney's The Lion King
Earthworm Jim
Earthworm Jim 2
Great Circus Mystery Starring Mickey & Minnie, The
Pitfall: The Mayan Adventure
Ristar (also available in Sonic Mega Collection & Sega Genesis Collection)
Sonic the Hedgehog (also available in Sonic Mega Collection & Sega Genesis Collection)
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (also available in Sonic Mega Collection)
Sonic & Knuckles (also available in Sonic Mega Collection)
ToeJam & Earl in Panic on Funkotron (a.k.a. TJ&E 2)
True Lies
World of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse & Donald Duck
X-Men 2: The Clone Wars

Most people have said the main ones, but you really can't pass on Shadowrun. I still play in on the console, on my laptop, and on my PSP (emu's are fine if you own the game and system).

My copy of Alissa Dragoon still annoys the hell out of me. Ever since I got to like the sixth level in that game, I've had some bad blood with it. I only recommend it to the most sadistic of gamers who enjoy a through ass beating.

I had Pirates Gold! For a while, but I hocked it. I already had Pirates on the PC. Plus I really needed the dough.

And you can't compare genesis valis to turbo valis. That's an unfair comparisan. Though the turbo one does have anime scenes and redbook audio along with more color, doesn't it move slightly slower then the genesis one, along with having less enemies?

I also forgot Ecco the Dolphin, Mutant League Football/Hockey, and Starflight

De-cap attack
Ranger X
Rocket Knight Adventures
Lightening Force
insector x
thunder force 2
thunder force 3
Quackshot starring Donald Duck
Zoom ( very cheap addictive puzzle type game )
General Chaos is one of the best games ever!
Forgot about this one, it is a solid game, too. No love for Shadowrun from anyone else?
If you are into real-time strategy games, you can't go wrong with "Dune: The Battle for Arrakis".
Damn I forgot about that one. Use to steal my uncle's genesis to play that all the time. Very good game. Wonder if he still has it.

Mutant League Football
Mutant League Hockey
Quackshot
Tiny Toon Adventures: Busters Hidden Treasure
Beyond Oasis
LandStalker
Shining Force
Shining Force 2
Comix Zone
General Chaos
Gadget Twins
Crusader of Centy (Another Zelda ripoff)
Mick and Mack: Global Gladiators (Recycling minigame!)
Rocket Knight Adventures
ATP Tour Tennis
NFL 95
Ren and Stimpy's Invention
Aladdin
The Jungle Book
The Lion King

I could go on and on

Mutant League Football and General Chaos have aged like shit, in my opinion. I just fired up MLF a few months ago and sold it almost immediately, it's just not that fun anymore.

My memories made it better than what it was. Same with General Chaos.

Skip the genesis, get the X'Eye unit.

And Mutant League Football is still fun with friends.

Paco: I think the turbo Valis games are a bit faster actually, but I haven't played the genesis ones in a while. Either version though, you can't go wrong. Valis 3 is a fantastic game on Genesis (I'm just a bit elitist since I happen to own a TurboDuo :p ) I have an X'Eye unit, but the CD part of it doesn't ever read discs :(

I don't remember, I did recall that the first Valis moved incredibly slow. And I do know that the Turbo Duo's processor is incredibly weak in comparisan to the Genesis. on top of that, the Cd unit shares processor with the main unit, unlike the Sega Cd which had it's own processor that worked in conjunction with the main genesis one.

And you have an X'eye too? Cool. Mine didn't work either! But I cleaned the inside and cleaned the lense with alcohol and then just moved some of the stuff up and down and now it works fine. Weird but great. I just love the AV input this thing has. So much more clear then the RF my regular Gen 2/Sega CD combo was using.

I have to add Battletoads / Double Dragon to my recommendations. I picked this up recently and it floats my boat pretty well.

a few more...

Gaiares - easily one of the best side-scrolling shooters for the Genesis!
Herzog Zwei - if you can find it... a great fast-playing sci-fi RTS.
The Revenge of Shinobi - Long challenging levels, lots of fun
Strider - 2D Capcom platformer. 'nuff said.
Star Control - an addictive mini version of the head to head space combat found in the legendary PC/3DO title, Star Control 2 (might be tough to find)
Turrican - a great explorative platform shooter
Zoom - a quirky 3D puzzle game

TMNT hyperstone hiest
Aladdin was a lot of fun when i was a kid
Sonic 2 was my favorite but all the sonics were great
MK
Road Rash was great...race motorcycles and wreck other people with chains
Street Fighter of course

i never owned a genesis but these were the games i played at my cousins house when i was younger. good luck

I was wondering when someone was going to Mention Herzog Zwei and MUSHA. Screw what everyone says, but I'll throw some love for a lil RPG called Sword of Vermillion. Has anyone mentioned Target Earth at all? And the music to Garies still chimes in my mind. That was one of the best shooters EVER!!! Revenge of Shinobi was the best of Shinobis. Streets if Rage 2 was the best Bare Knucle game. Forgotten Worlds was another fave of mine.

Sword of Vermillion is available (now or soon, I can't remember which) on the Wii Virtual Console.

I've only seen it mentioned once, so a big shout out for Contra: Hard Corps. Hard as hell (never beaten it) but it was my favorite game on the Genesis. Close second would be the Sonic and Knuckles + Sonic 3 combo. Always loved playing as Hyper Sonic.

Enjoy the system, and try to track down one of those six button controllers, as they are far more comfortable, and will make Street Fighter actually playable!

No one has mentioned BEYOND OASIS

Or about CRUSADER OF CENTY?

What about DYNAMITE HEADDY?

Perhaps the legendary SHINING FORCE 2?

The much under appreciate LANDSTALKER?

Relatively unknown games, only Shining Force 2 and Centy will cost you, but it's ALL WORTH IT.

Alien Storm

Rolling Thunder 2 & 3 along with Splatterhouse 2 & 3 I'd throw in as honorable mentions, also McDonald's Treasure Land Adventure is a solid platformer that was only on the Genesis. Maybe it's just me but I always liked Wings of Wor, a solid side scroller shmups IMO.

streets of rage series, shining force series, shadowrun, scooby doo adventure game. \
Theres some great hex strat games , master of monsters, just about any Koei game.

Target Earth and MUSHA are two of my favorite games of all time.

T.E is impossible without the cheat.

I'd also like to mention the EXCELLENT X-Men 2 Clone Wars

I picked it up while X-Men Legends 2 was out [loved it in my youth] and it made me dislike Legends 2 even more..Clone Wars was an X-Men game done right and the closest thing to the INCREDIBLE arcade game.

Another game rarely mentioned is Kid Chameleon, if you want to play just a huge, intimidating platformer, this is the one, I don't think I ever came close to beating it..HUGE game

And while not perfect by any standards, there's a really cheap [now] and decent version of Samurai Shodown for the Genesis, not a bad game at all, not arcade perfect in anyway, but pretty good.

Back in my super hardcore days, I beat Target Earth without the cheat. I also beat Contra Hard Corps. I did like 4 different endings. Landstalker was alright, just that the ending sucked balls. If you need some 6 button controllers, PM me. I have about 6 of em. Oh yeah, Kid Chamleon was one of the worst games ever. Eternal Champions made use of my six button controllers and no one could beat me if I used Trident. If you get a Sega CD, get the Sega CD verision. Way bloodier and funnier.
Lightening Force
thunder force 2
thunder force 3
Seconded, seconded, seconded.

Second also for NBA Jam - still a great game to play with friends (especially when you sink buzzer beaters from across the court ). I also have to second all the notions for Aladdin and Lion King, both are excellent games (and challenging, at least for me).

Also, the 6 button controllers mentioned previously can be had for little money from ebay (they're sold in 2 pack lots by many members). They're advertised as official controllers, but frankly I think they're just cheap knock-offs. Either way, they work fine for me and look/feel just like the 6 button controllers I bought back in the day.

Kid Chameleon is also a really fun, interesting game...thinking about it makes me wish I didn't sell it for chump change for FF7 :(

As far as the SF editions go, I prefer the Championship edition for its inclusion of Hyper Fighting. Also, I think it has more characters than Super.

Out of the games that I have(good ones) I made three different lists on what I think:

Must Buy Price Doesn't Matter:

Contra: Hard Corps
Gunstar Heroes
Mega Bomberman
Castlevania: Bloodlines
Sonic & Knuckles

ToeJam & Earl 1 & 2
Streets of Rage 1, 2 & 3

Ristar

Sparkster
Two Crude Dudes
Battletoads
Bubba 'n' Stix
Earthworm Jim 2
Kid Chameleon
Joe & Mac
Subterrania - Not very easy, but fun none the less.
Holy shit! I thought I'd never see this game in this thread. Good form, man.

I'd say my list but it's all been hit already.

Streets of Rage 3 should be in the buy at all costs. It can usually be had for around what, 20-30 dollars?
