Hey Everyone,

As the topic title states I just got a new computer and am looking for some PC games to get. I just got Half-Life 2 so you don't need to recommend that one

. My computer specs are as follows:

AMD Athlon 64 3500+
1GB RAM
250GB Hard Drive
ATI Radeon X850 XT Video Card

I was thinking about getting either Guild Wars or World of Warcraft but I have never played an MMORPG before and the monthly fee for WoW has me leaning towards not getting it. Is it really worth it?

As for other games I was thinking about getting, Battlefield 2, Far Cry, and Freedom Force vs. Third Reich were on top of the list.

Well, any recommendations are appreciated. Thanks for the help in advance.

pick up Battlefield 2 and join the clan!!

also if you are looking at FPS, check out Unreal Tournament 2004, Doom 3, and Painkiller as well. All are pretty cheap nowadays, and while I have not spent much time with Painkiller the other two are really good

Thanks Casey for info and the invite to play some Battlefield 2. If I end up getting it I will definitely have to play with some of the CAGs.

Just want to point out that I have Doom 3 for the xbox so I don't need to pick that up. Thanks again.

A game I cannot stress enough is Swat 4, which is a tactical shooter like Rainbow Six. The point of the game is to take down assailants by non-lethal means while securing hostages, disarming bombs, etc. The game's more slow-paced than any other FPS, so it's not everyone's cup of tea, but you should give it a try if you're looking for something out of the norm.

If you're into D&D-based RPGs, you can't go wrong with Baldur's Gate II, Planescape Torment, or the Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic series.

hey I just want more people to actually play with the clan and experience a great game. Mooky, Jam, Technique, Bob, and I played last night until the wee hours and it was loads of fun. Just trying to get more people in on the fun.

Surprisingly enough I picked up that for less than $1000.

Picked up an HP a1130n which has the AMD 64 3500+, 1 GB RAM, & 250GB hard drive for $625 after a rebate and coupon. The video card I scored for $350 brand new/sealed off of ebay, I used the 10% off coupon that was posted. So, $975 for all that is not bad at all in my opinion.

yea but we started playing pretty late. Jam and Mooky had work in the morning

yeah ihes right about swat 4 Its freakin amazing and very difficult ( if your trying not to kill anyone) . Far cry is worth it also .

Battlefield 2 is a must buy , just to be on the clan ;) and helping us win some matches . Casey's right about how fun it was.

Alrighty, my reccomendations are:
Morrowind III: Elderscrolls- Uber Open ended RPG, has expansions to buy and user created ones as well.
Farcry-Very nice looking and playing FPS, has smart A.I. and is a very well made shooter, though its insanely hard.
Unreal Tournament 2004-Great multiplayer FPS, has vechicals, super supported mod community, and is great for mindless killing.
Battlefield 1942 or 2-Both are amazing games, I think they are equally good in their own way, so if you're short on cash, you can pick up 1942 with expansions for cheap and then instal the "Desert Combat Final" mod for modern combat. If you got the money, 2 is also a great game with better graphics and a higher ability for informing players on what to do. MULTIPLAYER ONLY! Single player A.I. is retarded on both games.
Guild Wars-Great MMORPG, it gets old after about 2 weeks if you don't like fighting other players, but thats more time than most games can offer anyways so I highly recommend it. If you do like Player vs. Player it can last you for a very long time. Expansions will be released in the future if you want them, but you don't need them.
World of Warcraft-Supposedly Great MMORPG, This is one of those, omg game never really ends RPG's, it comes with a monthly fee, but judging by the shear number of players the game has, it doesn't seem to deter too many. I admittedly don't like that style of game, but its a "true" MMORPG where players can randomly run into each other out in the wilds and has crafting, mining, fishing, cooking, etc. all that boring everyday stuff that doesn't belong in games :D . Its supposedly the best MMORPG out right now, so if you've got a steady pay-check and want the best, go for it.
Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004-Awesome Flight Sim, though I'm guessing not many people like these anymore (since I've seen, what, 2 flight sims come out recently), flight sims are still my favorite genere. You can't get too much more realistic than M$' flight sim and it allows you to fly over real world locations which is really cool. If you're into flight sims, pick that one up.
Neverwinter Night Platinum-Excellent 1 or Multiplayer RPG, the graphics are a little dated now days, but for streamlined D and D RPG action, you can't go wrong with Neverwinter Nights. The platinum comes with the two expansions and is only $30 at BB (25 GGC).
Heros of Might and Magic 4- Great strategy game, build up armies of troops from a castle and give them to your hero so he/she can capture more castles to train more troops until you control an empire. Not everyone's cup of tea.

and finally...
Half-Life 2-IMO best one-player FPS action you can have on the PC. If you've got a computer able to run it, buy HL-2. Great story, great action, amazing graphics. It's still pricey, but I'm sure here on CAG you can find it for under 40$.

Those are my suggestions. However, those are the games that you could buy. You must not forget the plethora of free games available for download. I will quickly go over the best I've found so you can download them when your short on cash or need a new game.

Gunz: The Duel- Sweet action 3rd person shooter with melee weapons in addition to guns. Has an RPG quality in that, you kill people and get exp and money. Exp levels you up to use new items and money lets you buy those items. Very nice for a free game, though its still a little buggy since its in beta, but it will remain free even when it goes commercial.

Conquer Online- Diablo IIish MMORPG with nice handdrawn backdrops and 3D characters. This is basically a generic RPG complete with level grinding, loot finding, and Player Vs. Player action. You can even mine omg! Seriously though, its quite fun, but the PK system lets you kill anyone anywhere, so you gotta be careful with your stuff since you drop it when you die.

Gunbound World Champion- The classic game of artillary, only with crazy things instead of tanks. Use a variety of weapons to kill people in this turn based strategy shooter in the vein of artillary. Apparently this game was better before its "World Champion" edition, but it seems just fine to me though I never played it before. Killing people earns you money to pimp-out your little dude with stuff that improves your stats. Entertaining and Fun time killer.

Maple Story-Another free MMORPG, only this one is 2D side-scrolling. Its also all in anime style so that may or may not appeal to you. Typical pick your class, kill monsters, level up action, but the side scrolling is a nice break from typical RPG's.

Thats the best free games I've found. I hope this "guide" helps you, and happy PC gaming!

if you are talking about free games how can you forget Wolfenstein Enemy Territory?

Also I saw you are pretty new to PC games so you may want to check out older titles as well that you can score cheap.
Mafia, No One Lives Forever 2, and all the Medal of Honor games can be found for fairly cheap (I excluded Call of Duty because I have not seen a deal on that in a while)
Just want to point out that I have Doom 3 for the xbox so I don't need to pick that up. Thanks again.
It looks and plays better on the PC. And you can't get the expansion for Xbox ;) . Don't get into any MMO's. Pick up Far Cry and Painkiller as suggested.

also you may want to check out America's Army. Game is completely free, but since it is used as a training tool as well as meant to be fun there is a pretty large learning curve and campers a plenty since there is a huge time limit in between rounds.

Also Rainbow Six 3: Raven Shield is a good game to snag on the cheap as well. Great multiplayer game and tons of user made maps

Thanks everyone for all the help. I think I am definitely going to have to pick up Battlefield 2 now. I think Half Life 2 & that should hold me over for a while. Eventually I'll pick up Far Cry and some of the other games mentioned. I still have The first Freedom Force that I might go back and play. I also have Tribes: Vengence that I picked up a while ago at Traget for like $7, I haven't had a chance to play it since my old computer kept on crashing when I tried to run it. Hopefully I'll be able to join up with some of you in Battlefied 2 once I get it. Again, thanks for all the info.

You shoulda gotten more RAM. I got half the processor (Athlon XP 2900+), half the GPU (9800 SE) but one and a half times the RAM. You should stick another gig stick in that system so it can really smoke.

Went out tonight and picked up Battlefield 2 and Far Cry. I'm going to get everything setup tomorrow and then hopefully I can get together for a game with you guys sometime.

Far Cry is supposed to have a ton of bonus content for AMD 64 bit processors so make sure to download it. I can't speak on what exactly is considering I have a P4 but you can check it out for yourself
I think you would need the windows 64 bit version.
you may. I don't really know the whole story behind it, only that it was exclusive to the 64 bit AMD processors.
