Sorry guys to make a new thread about this but I finally joined the PS3 community. I just bought it off a guy from craigslist and it seems flawless. Anyway, I have a few questions.

Whats the process to install linux on your ps3? I googled it thinking there would be a lot of documentation on it but it seems that I'm not finding as much info as I'm hoping for.

Also, anything that a new ps3 owner should be aware of?

You can boot the PS3 to Yellow Dog and use it just like you would a PC... i.e. use office, firefox and all of the things you would do on a normal PC. Right now it isn't very fast though because Linux can only use 256mb of the PS3's memory architecture.

So no additional functionality as a game machine, then? Like not playing emulators or the like. Oh well. I've already got a mac mini as a real computer in my living room.

Well, you can do everything a Linux PC could do, so yes, you can actually run emulators on the Linux partition, but it wouldn't be any different than doing it on your PC (except probably slower).

Congrats on the purchase.

Its a good console if you look pass all the hate.

My favorite interface and multimedia console. Very fast fluid and functional.

Thanks. I can see why you like the interface so much. It does flow very well.

My only concern now is that I've kept the ps3 on since the afternoon to download demos and it's been very slow. I'll have to look into why it's taking so damn long. I haven't even finished one yet! Also, the heat output of this thing is huge and I can feel my room heating up haha

Congrats. Right now I'm using mine as a PS2 with a 1st party wireless controller, although I did enjoy Resistance immensely. Maybe I'll play it again with a bumped up difficulty level.

Thanks everyone, especially to those who posted great links for linux on ps3

it seems that I overestimated its capabilities and will hold off until newer developments have been made

until then, I'll just enjoy the games ;)

Make sure you have plenty of cooling space. As long as you're not playing PS3 games, the heat coming out of the PS3 should be minimum. It's a little hot, but not that hot.
