just need your help...FFXI?

CAGiversary!
I'm trying to figure out if FFXI is worth the time/money that it takes to put into it. I have enough credit, along with my discount, to be able to afford the game for a small amount of 20 or so bucks so...well..is it worth it? I've never played a MMORPG before but I've been a fan of final fantasy forever and have always been curious on how/why games like Everquest or Dark Ages of Camelot managed to attract so many gamers...what do you guys think?

FYI, my PC can't handle it so the PS2 is my only real way to go

you need to invest a good amount of time to get your money's worth out of the game, if you don't plan on playing more than 5-10 hours a week, it's really not too worth it.

also, you will basically not play any other game anymore (assuming you're hooked)

hmm..I'm sure I could find enough time for that. I'm graduating highschool in well...about a week, so I'm sure I'll have time whenever I'm not working at EB.

I bought one of those NetExtenders to play in my room on X-box live and such and now I need to find something to play on my PS2..I figured I'll need the Harddrive eventually if they keep their promise with downloadable content with certain games (eg: GT4), so I hope it'll be worth it to invest in FFXI

well financially it isnt bad but there are a few things to keep in ming
1) you have to (as posted before) play at least 5 - 10 (if not more) hours per week just to stay with the rest of the people
2) the combat is weird (if you have never played an MMORPG before) you run around for a long time and then click on enemies and hope your player wins.
3) as far as PS2 you probably want to get a keyboard which makes talking and performing multiple actions easier
now dont think this is just a bitch fest
this game is great if you want to try a MMORPG because of the familiarity of the final fantasy realm, and its cool interacting and leveling up with other people. just make sure u have the time my friend,

curious, have either one of you played/or play the game currently?

thanks for the advice though...one of the big things holding me back is knowing that known of my friends are actually going to go down with the purchase. Like I've said, I've never played a MMORPG, and I have no idea if the people on FFXI are accepting of new commers and such...

yeah i had it, and had to sell it cuz of time...i work and go to scholl both full time and so thus time is an issue....never thought i could use the word time that many "times" in a sentence, anyways i will stop wasting your...time
but yeah people are way cool with noobs and give you free crap, just dont be annoying..oh yeah i have the brand new 400 page strategy guide if you want to pick it up cheap dude

you know I may just take you up on that...I was debating on whether it was a necessity because I have access to it all the time at work....

I'm thinking now I might just pick the damn game up. I figure if I don't like it, fine..it'll be my first expierence with a MMORPG by which I can dictate my further purchases on....thanks for the help

I have a level:
32 rdm
25 whm
15 blm
10 thf
5 war

so yes, I have played and still is playing =)

I have also played dark age of camelot in the past

I would suggest picking up the original ps2 everquest. I have seen it for $5 at best buy, but ymmv. Great cheap way to find out if a mmorpg is something you would be interested in.

Yes i bought FFXI like 2 weeks back and im hooked its very very very very very fun, I play nightly for like 4 hrs each night, ull spend alot of time leveling up and meeting new ppl, aslo buying and selling stuff at the auction house is pretty fun, sorta like ebay style. I would highly recommend this game! The reason i bought it was becuz my friend talked me into it saying i wouldnt be disappointed(and i wasnt) also cuz i got it for 10.00 with some crappy trade ins and credit.
So all in all PICK UP THIS GAME ITS WORTH IT.

Also tell me if u get it cuz ill give u my world pass number so u can play on the same server as me and ill teach u the ropes.

thanks...I was wondering..how does the world pass thing work? Do you still get to keep your character on the server you first played on when you start a new one on another server?

I think tomorrow at work I'm going to finally pick up the game....any recommendations for what keyboard I should use? If theres really no need for one of those logitech ones I'll just use the one to my other computer...

No need to get crazy with a keyboard just get any usb keyboard and the world pass is u need to make a new character cuz after ur done making ur character they ask for the pass number and world.....well hope u like it

Well I went to a server other CAGs were going to, but we can never find a time to play. It's alright though, I'm having a blast playing on it, meeting new people. I got my best friend to join and we play basically everyday. I got a permanent party of 3, and it's always easy to get the other 3 guys. I dont play as much as I wish I could because of work and school. I'm done with work, but I still got school, and preparations to move back home to Miami. I still find time to play.

It isn't for everyone, definitely not for everyone. The CAGs I originally played with got bored with it. Personally I'm a bit addicted, and really is the only game I need.

I don't play as much as others, but I do got a LVL 19 RDM, 15 BLM, 4 THF.

I'm personally on the Ragnarok server. I don't believe any other CAG is on that server though.

The worldpass allows you to join a specific server, otherwise you can't select which server you join. I don't think you would want to have more than one character at different servers. You will be wasting your time doing everything twice.

Any usb keyboard will be fine for FFXI. The game is actually fully playable from keyboard alone. It's very efficient as well.

yeah, the game is very addicting and well worth it, i had never played a mmorpg before this but it's well worth the $13 a month to play

the game starts off kind of slow, but once you gain a few levels you will be enjoying the game a whole lot more because of all the different areas you can explore

the unfortunate thing about this game is that part of me now feels that I really don't need anymore single player games to play, this can entertain me easily for the next year

I'm getting it this weekend, I've never played an mmorpg before and am exciited as hell to try. I finally got online last weekend and bought a keyboard at EB for $19 and so far have only played amplitude online and it kicks ass. Lot's of fun. I'd say give it a try, if you don't like it, then you can always sell it.

Never played a MMORPG before, but a couple of my Xbox Live buddies convinced me that I would like this game. Picked it up and it is kinda slow early on. Once I gained some lvl's and got use to everything I have had no desire to play anything else.

I'm on Titan server in Bastok so if you hop on that server I would be willing to help you out. Curently I'm a

LVL 25 Monk/LVL 11 War named Karnak kicking a?? on Qufim Island.

Speaking of which only 3 hours till i get out of work and hop back on FFXI :)

Maxflight you dont have to tell me. My weekend was spent in Valkrum Dunes trying to find a decent party that knew what they were doing. Left Qufim cause i was (25/9). 2 days 4 deaths and 2 more new people added to my blacklist I stopped Sun morning.

I actually cant wait to get the advanced job so I could start a Sam or Ninja. Now if I could only figure out a way to start mass producing gill I would be set. :)

For anyone interested in this game I have 2 FFXI/HDD set ups that I will sell or trade. I had a level 23 monk/10 warrior, but I got bored/pissed easily with the battle system so I am back on EQOA Frontiers. I will sell for $70 shipped each, or trade for a GBA SP. Pm me if interested.

so I'm going to pick this game up tomorrow..I was just curious..anyone have any suggestions or tips on starting out?

is the game pretty balanced? I mean...in terms of jobs and such..does one class typically overpopulated the game or one just ridiculously more powerful?

I FINALLY PICKED IT UP TODAY!

Ha, well I have my last exam for HIghschool tomorrow and I'm out so I'm trying my hardest to wait till tomorrow afternoon to open it. Damn, it's so hard to wait...

I bought FFXI with the EB trade-in deal, and finally installed the hard drive and loaded the game this past Sunday. My first game of this type ... at first it seemed very complex and confusing, but the learning curve doesn't seem to be too bad.

So I have spent a few hours beating up rabbits, worms, and giant beetles. I'm only a level 5 Warrior so far -- I figured it was a good idea to spend some out in the forest getting some points.

I'm interested in some new user tips as well. I'm not sure what the best use of my time is--join with a team, do missions, etc?

Start talkin to NPC in your town for different quests so you can earn your self some gil and get to know the surrounding areas better.

Also you can do the earlier missions for Rank 1 and they will accomplish the same.

From my experience I really didn't start teaming up to form parties untill I hit lvl 10

Well not like you get the choice, many CAGs are spread out in all the servers. I know there are 3 are about 5-6 of us in Diabolos, but to be honest we don't see much of each other. I don't feel like buying another world pass just to get wasted. So maybe someone will get you a WP and you can join their server. If not, it is entirely up to you. There is another thread that mentions what server and players and all that. It's called "Give us your FFXI info". So you decide if you want to keep creating/deleting characters until you get the server you want, go random, or wait for a WP.
