Ken Kutaragi smart mofo or Evil ego maniac?

CAGiversary!
The E3 show in the U.S. may be scaling back but this year's Tokyo Game Show is set to be the biggest yet, according to show organizers.

The event, highlighting Japan's computer games industry, is scheduled to take place from September 22 to 24 and already 143 exhibitors have booked 1,710 booth units, the Computer Entertainment Supplier's Association (CESA) said. That beats last year's 131 exhibitors and 1,433 booth units.

While exhibitor numbers are expected to rise, the number of visitors is predicted to fall. The event attracted 176,000 people last year but for 2006 the CESA is expecting 160,000 people to attend. No explanation was given for the decrease.

To accommodate the extra demand the organizers have expanded to show to fill eight halls at the Makuhari Messe exhibition center in Chiba, east of Tokyo.

The event will begin with a keynote speech by Ken Kutaragi , president of Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. Kutaragi will outline the PlayStation 3, which is scheduled to launch in Japan just under two months after the Tokyo Game Show. Sony has yet to confirm if playable versions of PlayStation 3 software will be available at the exhibition, but it seems likely given its proximity to the console's launch.

The expanding Tokyo Game Show is in contrast to its North American equivalent, E3, which is set to get radically smaller in 2007. Organizers of the show said this week that next year's event will be refocused and consist of press events and small meetings with media, retail, development and other sectors of the industry.

OK, so think about this..... SONY rumored to be one of THE factors in E3 getting downsized b/c they didnt want in anymore on that scale. An asian based company is headlining TGS with a keynote speech from Ken Kutaragi and a big presense at the show. After the fact that they bombed in most peoples eyes at E3 in the US with pretty much with all negitive press to follow that and the fact that MS has absolutley no sucess in japan. This seems like a very smart move if indeed (again which is highly probable) that SONY caused a big portion of the E3 downsizing by stating they werent interested in doing it on that scale. Yet now TGS is getting bigger?

We all know 360 in japan is about as useful as dog poop in a room with no windows.....do you think this was all an evil Ken plan or just a really really damn good coincidence?

You're reading way way too much into this. The biggest push to scale back E3 was from third party companies like EA. I'm sure Sony wanted to scale things back too, but they've got a system to launch, and TGS offers no competition from Nintendo other then third party offerings. It's Sony's best chance to get a ton of PS3 hype and to repair a lot of the damage that happened at E3.

Hence your answer must be coincidence.....but the rumor is not EA but SONY had big hand in the "scaling down" of E3. All in all a BIG plus for SONY

The PS3 won't look as bad in JP since Japanese gamers won't give the 360 a 2nd look let alone a first look. If MS has some sort of playable Blue Dragon or Lost Odyssey it might get a good look but outside of that happening...
It also will depend on Wii having some good demos that show Japanese gamers it is more then just a novelty.

No, my answer is that it makes no sense in the long term for Sony to break the biggest gaming conference in the world where up until this point they've been dominant only to move it to a region where they already have tons of in roads made. Even if this is an attempt to marganalize Microsoft in the United States, do you honestly think Microsoft wouldn't be able to put together a Games for Windows/360 exclusive conference?

So, basically your theory is that Sony tried to downsize E3 in an effort to move the big game industry show to Japan, which would provide more favorable press for them?

Could be. Obviously Sony has more clout in Japan than they do in the US, and they will be preaching to the choir as the Japanese are not any time soon going to become faithful MS fanboys (those Japanese who DO own a 360, will likely buy a PS3 as well). Especially without Nintendo present, TGS will basically be owned by Sony this year. Microsoft would have to bring out the really big guns--like Halo 3--to have a shot. So yeah, there is some sense to the idea.

While console specific events make sense to some extent (Microsoft X06 or whatever shows, Nintendo's Spaceworld), on the other hand there is still great appeal in a show where you can actually show up your competitors. Look at all the positive praise Nintendo got for "stealing" E3 this year away from the more powerful consoles.

Still, Sony can't simply ignore the American market. Nintendo continues to be successful because they have universal appeal. MS continues to stumble a bit because they do not. Sony has been so successful for having that universal appeal, but it isn't like they can go strictly Japanese. They've got to bring in that American market, and that means blowing people away at TGS. The games really need to look significantly better than 360 games, or Blu-Ray has to blow people away, or they need to announce a ton of new exclusives. They need something to recapture American interest before launch. I know they'll still sell-out in the USA, but you do have to look beyond launch, and Sony needs some good PR.

I hope they do it, because I think Sony has brought a lot of good to the game community in a lot of ways. They still have some of the best exclusives outside of Nintendo. I'd hate to see the console completely fail.

They dont have to, SONY as a brand name is very very well know and as said they have been E3's showhorse for sometime...now failing there this year, topped with costs for the show they got what they wanted brandwise from E3 and now its only helping there competition at this point. It makes a whole lotta sense for them to do this (leave E3) especially since they do own TGS pretty much. And a seperate windows/xbox event would be known to gamers as where E3 even had celebrities and tv coverage for the average joe. E3 got alot of the gaming community in the light from the creepy dark corners of D&D and "must be a dork" persona that gaming had to the general population and even talk shows (ala The daily show episode of him playing halo2)

I think SONY had a big hand in the downsizing of E3 b/c it just makes ALOT of sense for them. At the same time it was THE place for gaming community to shine for only once a year (even though goofy BB or Blockbuster/EB/Gamestop employees abused to get there they did get the message out to people about the games they saw) and hopefully it wont downsize to some crappy meeting.

To be quite honest the industry is changing as a whole, take for instance XBL. Ok so why do you wanna go to lets say IGN to read a review of Halo3 if you were able to DL it and play it for yourself? Do you care what some site (some with alligences to companies like SONY or MS) when you yourself can actually play them? When Ps3 and XBL get the online all set up and a head of the game they will be pumpin out demos and reviews and even dev. interviews to keep you in the loop, i mean why not? why go to IGN or gamespot if you see it right on your system? I mean if it gets to the point (which it will) where the progress of a game is reviewed or the developer is interviewed and its put right on the XBL marketplace for you to watch I bet sites like IGN and Gamespot will start to lose some customers...alot of them as far as consoles go. I think the little guys are the ones who will be shut out here in the future...gaming sites to go bye bye and small dev houses wont have the funding to make full fledged games or now even get the idea out to the public (since the public cant go to the "new" E3)

Again back to one of my other posts (if you can handle my typing) we as gamers are in a very odd spot in the coming years, we are forced into a format war (that we dont want) production costs are on the rise so we will not be seeing a whole lot of "exclusive" titles except for in house publishers like microsoft studios or any of SONY & Nintendo's in house so dont look for too many new and original ideas all though there will be some as most games will be available on 2-3 consoles. We are in a fight for an entertainment hub for the living room, watch for that keyboard & mouse and web surfing and digital distribution of games & MOVIES ala DL. Costs are getting retarded for systems/hardware/DL's/ and games (not that its never happened but its getting to be more accepted) All i know its a good time to be a gamer and at the same time its not like it was before by any means

Why are you only seeing this only as a coincidence or an evil plan?

The first implies odd forces at work, synchronized to some ethereal clock humans can't comprehend.

The second is a douchebag fanboy rant.

Why can it not just be, gasp, a cause and effect situation? Which is probably the case. It doesn't have to be only one or only the other. It can be a legitimate third option. There's probably even fourth and fifth legitimate options if you think about it long enough. Cost is one. Well there you go.

If there was another American show that became larger in the light of smaller E3s, would you have the same theory?

No.

In fact, we'd prolly have your bizarro Sony counterpart bitching about how Bill Gates beats baby children with other baby children.

I got it the losters in your pants pinched you and blurred your vision! (ps always lovin your avatar)

I said "do you think" which implies thinking as in your own opinion, just b/c i presented 2 options doesnt mean you were forced into them I didnt post a poll or anything..geesh.

If Bill gates does bash babies do you honestly think he couldnt buy his way out of it...lol.

I highly doubt (on a serious) note that if E3 in fact downsizes as greatly as they say we will have any real show to match it for at least 2-4 yrs. As far as fanboy rants go i pick on SONY but i pick on MS too...as of late SONY just has too much to even keep up with, but down the road ill have a PS3 and a Wii...fanboy means I am about the company or what it respresents...sorry im about games..plain and simple

PS- Keep up the good work on the avatar

Agreed. Although, my sources inside Sony CEA have stated, and provided supporting examples, that KK is indeed losing his mind. You know what they say, genius' are also borderline crazy.
