I think this is a repeat topic that goes popularly unanswered, but I shall try anyway…

I’m just looking for a great consumer wireless router. I don’t need or particularly want draft-n, but I’d take it if it came with the best option. I’ll be hooking up a couple of PCs, a Wii, PS3, and 360. I’ll be happy with a something that gives me a lot of things to play with, and good wireless connectivity (preferably over g).

Here’s what I’m looking at right now:

D-Link DGL 4300 – Gigabit switch, and GamerFuel packet filtering seems pretty cool. Apparently has good range, but it seems to be sort of old-hat technology. It came out two years ago, has a single antenna, and obviously no MIMO.

Buffalo WHR-HP-G54 – MIMO, and flashable with DD-WRT, which apparently gives lot of options I may or may not have use for.

ZyXel X-550 – MIMO, dipole antenna. But ZyXel?

So, is MIMO technology really worth anything, or should I trust the 2-year-old reviews and go with that D-Link?

Yes, I'm posting in the PC forum... I’m not really looking for a deal, and I’m just sort of after the PC user experience with any of these routers. I think the tech-level of this forum is the best fit.

Well from my personal experience, I wouldn't ever buy another D-Link, mine crap out after six months, and on a computer gaming forum I go to, other people's D-Link have also crap out just as fast, even the high end "gaming" routers.

i use the same router 90% of the world uses....Linksys WRT54G .... works liek a charm....360, laptop, desktop and DS connect to it on a normal basis.....also stream movies from my pc to the 360 through it with no problems wirelessly

I work in the internet repair/support department for a large ISP and one trend I have noticed is that Linksys routers give their owners much less of a headache.

I personally own the WRT54G and have yet to encounter an issue with it, and in my house three computers (two wireless, one wired) and two 360's (one wireless, one wired) use it. It's a great all around router.

I own a Buffalo WHR-54G and think it's a great router. I got it for $50 about 1.5 years ago because the WRT-54Gs were still $90.

The new firmware for the Linksys WRT54G (and I think now the WRT54GS) sucks ass. It's no longer Linux based. I got a G around this time last year, and it was horrible. I got a GS which rules, but only because the firmware isn't a piece of trash.

I don't know if there have been any new firmware upgrades, but I'd avoid both the G and the GS for right now.

I use the Zyxel....and it sure is better than Netgear and D-Link for sure. Been using it for 5 months now and never had a signal dropped once.

there is TONS of free custom firmware for the WRT54G's if you dont like the linksys firmware

Apparently the WRT54G V.5 is the non-Linux version with crippled RAM, and the WRT54GL is the version that's still on Linux (Hence the L). The WRT54GL is the top rated router at New Egg.

Just so you know where I'm coming from, I've got a D-Link DI-524 that I'm fairly happy with (it's been reliable, but its range isn't good), and I'm replacing a Linksys BEFW11S4 which is... ancient and giving me trouble.

Thanks for all the responses.
