In an apparent reversal of Susan G. Komen For the Cure's funding cuts to Planned Parenthood, the founder and CEO of the nation's largest breast-cancer advocacy agency said Friday that the group would amend the criteria that sparked a firestorm.
"We will continue to fund existing grants, including those of Planned Parenthood, and preserve their eligiblity to apply for future grants," Nancy G. Brinker, the agency's ambassador, said in a statement.
"We want to apologize to the American public for recent decisions that cast doubt upon our commitment to our mission of saving women's lives."
...
But Cecile Richards, president of Planned Parenthood, said the agency was grateful to resume longstanding relations with Komen and that she anticipated continued funding.
...
She credited an outpouring of support, particularly on on social media sites, with forcing the change. In that last three days, Planned Parenthood raised $3 million and acquired 10,000 new Facebook supporters, Richards said.
...
The AP reported that a source with direct knowledge of decision-making at Komen's headquarters said the grant-making criteria were adopted with the deliberate intention of targeting Planned Parenthood. The criteria's impact on Planned Parenthood and its status as the focus of government investigations were highlighted in a memo distributed to Komen affiliates in December.
According to the source, who spoke on condition of anonymity for fear of repercussions, a driving force behind the move was Karen Handel, who was hired by Komen last year as vice president for public policy after losing a campaign for governor in Georgia in which she stressed her anti-abortion views and frequently denounced Planned Parenthood.

TLDR: Komen cuts off planned parenthood breast cancer screening funds because planned parenthood also offers abortion services. The incredible msm and social media backlash forces them to reconsider.

Another win for progressives. Hey conservatives - are you ever going to check out this new internet thing

so have we ever figure out who was the republican who started the investigation on Planned Parenthood?

Edit It was Cliff Stearns (FL)

He might be the most recent, but not the first I'm sure.

Hey camoor, since we're now grammar nazi's on this forum, it's spelled "savvy.":D

What are you talking about - I spelled it right ;)

I had this conversation the other day. Komen should have either (1) never dropped PP or (2) doubled down on it.

But going back to funding PP, they've alienated more people. If I were to give money, it would be to another cancer foundation (or directly to Planned Parenthood at this point). Komen will only get my money if they have pink box tops on Honey Nut Cheerios or whatever product they're incidentally pinkwashing that I already buy anyway.

Komen needs to kiss a helluva lot more progressive ass to get any respect back from the likes of me.

Oh and don't forget that "partnership" with KFC from a while back, pink ribbons on buckets o' chicken. Never mind hat fried foods have a link to an increase in the chance for cancer. I'm always skeptical of these organizations.

I can't imagine a bigger fuck up for an organization like this. They crazy pissed off every pro-choicer (and everyone that doesn't give a shit about PP) on the planet and then flip and piss off every pro-lifer. I would have probably given money to them sooner or later. Now I'd rather burn the cash than give it to those idiots.

I'm not going to lie, there is no chance I would have given them money either way, but the management team is a bunch of morons. Did they hire netflix' CEO for the past few weeks?

I don't think it was directly for that reason. They've got a policy in their charter that states that they won't fund/donate to any organization that is under investigation, which PP currently is during the semi-annual congressional witch-hunt.

It was exactly for that reason. Myke's linked story's reporter saw leaked emails that confirmed it was intentionally targeted at PP.

lulz @ netflix. hahaha. yea.

We would have. My wife and I each have a charity budget. I usually give to PP, EFF, and Child's Play. My wife gives to whoever shakes her down. Komen would have gotten her sooner or later.

Plus the 'under investigation' criteria didn't stand up to the slightest bit of scrutiny.

They might as well have said "we don't fund organizations that have people working for them" because it's almost as plausible a rationale.

oh I never said it was rational or reasonable or well founded. Just that it was the reason given.

Either way, Komen is more concerned with the upper bits while PP likes the upstairs and downstairs bits so I'm cool with them since I like the upstairs and downstairs bits of the ladies.

It's similar to when Florida crafted legislation specifically designed for one person (the Terry Schiavo incident)

And this case also involves Florida. WTF is wrong with Florida.

Speaking of Komen, I've always been leary about those fucking 3-day walk fundraising drives. The whole pink ribbon thing has a nice sentiment and all, but the whole thing strikes me as a really skeevy marketing scheme when you tie it to yogurt tops and KFC. Kinda like how camoor said earlier.

Isn't Komen the group that sues the hell out of anyone that uses the phrase '____ for the Cure'? Or is that a separate organization?

I wouldn't be surprised if it was. I'm pretty sure they trademarked it.

We usually give to places we can get the biggest bang for our buck. Doctors without borders, the hunger project, and the water project. But I can see Komen getting to her sooner.

DALLAS - Nancy Brinker, founder and chief executive of Susan G. Komen for the Cure, took home $417,000 in salary in 2010, according to financial documents posted on the charity’s Website, and paid 50 top executives more than $100,000 each.
What the Dallas-based foundation spent on staff and administrative expenses included $20 million for advertising and promotion, $14 million for “office expenses’’ and more than $14 million for consulting and professional services. Another $7 million was spent on
Nancy Brinker, founder and CEO of Susan G. Komen for the Cure contract labor and $3 million for travel. Komen officials did not return calls and emails seeking comment on Monday.
Brinker, who also serves on Komen’s board of directors, traveled first class on airlines with the explicit permission of the board she chairs.

If they were honest about the ribbons they'd change them from pink to green...

Karen Handel resigns.

Now the organization is under much more scrutiny (from the public eye). Cynics and skeptics have long known they were a grift, now the public does.

Brinker will be gone before the end of March, and the organization on the whole will be a shell of its former self within 24 months.

They can go get fucked for the cure as far as much of the public is concerned.

Fark headline: Karen Handel resigns from Komen for the Cure to spend more time making decisions for your family

How to crater an organization in 96 hours. Incredible.

First of all there are many universities and other agencies under investigation right now and nothing will come out of them

 That is such bullshit. "Oh I just thought we shouldn't associate with any organization under investigation. Planned parenthood is under investigation? The hell you say..."

It is amazing.

The whole thing was a house of cards but it was making alot of folks at the top rich. Then they stepped on a political landmine.

Unfortuately, as much as we may vilify the Komen CEO and her exec cronies they will still walk away with millions that should have gone to charity.

When it comes to the rich, even when the bad guys lose they still win.
