"Laborer" from El Salvador charged with Chandra Levy's Murder
I admit, you make a good point, but to maximize effectiveness you might want to add in some satellite-based infrared monitoring in addition to the radar and some automated laser turrets in case some get through.
How about a slightly underground processed nuclear waste storage facility running parallel to the Rio Grande?

I say slightly underground so that enough radiation leaks through that anybody moving through the area at less then 20 mph gets LD90, but surrounding communities aren't affected.
Not that the numbers aren't relevant, but I'd just like to point out that all noncitizens aren't necessarily illegal immigrants, and the numbers from New York (which make up a significant number of the total) and Colorado (not that significant) include all foreign-born inmates, not just noncitizens. Also, the crime rate would depend on the comparison of those who have committed crimes to those who haven't, not just the percentage of prisoners who are illegal immigrants.
Ah, good points. Numbers could be a good bit lower since non-citizen would include legal immigrants who haven't earned citizenship yet.

That's what I get for not clicking the link and reading up on what the stats really meant!

yeah, those numbers dont differentiate bewteen legal and non-legal citizens, so take it for what its worth. i should have been more specific when i posted, i figured since i put "non-citizen" that would be clear enough.

You post was fine, I just missed the "non-citizen" part since I just glanced quickly when taking a very short break from work!

I owe you an apology, I feel, dmaul. I totally forgot about your field of study when I made the mykevermin comment. So if you would like to pontificate on any study you are aware of concerning incarceration and illegal immigration, I'm all ears and eager to learn.

@koggit, The issue, as far as I see it, is illegal immigration and the consequences that brings. That's what I'm discussing. If that's unacceptable, then I guess you are done.

I agree with Ramastoria, I don't really want a crackdown on illegals, or any crazy new border security. I'd love to just start with enforcement of existing laws.

The reason I feel so passionate about this issue is not just because of my wife, but because I actually love immigrants. I love mexicans. I love asians. Most of my friends I've been hanging out with lately are all immigrants. So I listen to their frustration about immigration policy in this country. I WANT more of them to come here. I want immigration reform so it isn't so confusing and expensive. I just think they should have a background check, and be cleared and somewhat tracked by the government. I just don't think anyone, of any background, of any criminal history, should so easily be able to come here as they are now.

No apology needed at all. As I said it's not my area of expertise within the field, I'm knowledgable on it from grad school studying for comp exams and having to cover corrections in intro to CJ classes--but it's not the area I do my research work in etc. So Myke would have much more to say on correctional issues.

In any case, I suspect it's something there is no good stats on. If the DOJ just has "non-citizens" lumped together then there is probably no national source on how many illegal immigrants are incarcerated. Maybe some state level data somewhere for some states, but I'm not curious enough to go digging for it.
If you want to help the less fortunate, donate to the Salvation Army. Tax money should go to benefit tax payers.
Or support international groups that help the less fortunate in places like Mexico and Central America. Or - here's a thought! - support tough border enforcement coupled with increased legal immigration. That way, the less fortunate (but honest and hardworking) immigrants who deserve their shot at success and the American dream take the place of violent drug/human trafficking "coyotes," gangs, sex slaves, etc.

Whatever your position is on illegal immigration, you'd have to be delusional to think most media outlets don't tiptoe around the issue. A "jailed laborer"? How often do legal immigrants or others get called "laborers" in that context?
