Laptop Problem

CAGiversary!
Where's a good place to take a laptop to get fixed? because my sister kids dropped milk on her laptop and now the keys don't work also the laptop makes a weird noise when loading up.

Unless you decide to send it back to the manufacturer, it really depends on where you live.

I imagine that there are independent places where you can mail in your laptop and they will fix it for you, but I don't know of any offhand.

Either way, be prepared for sticker shock. You'll likely be tempted to just buy a new laptop with what they're going to try to charge you.

If you're not mechanically/technically inclined STOP READING NOW.

What make/model is the laptop? Some companies (like Dell) make the service docs available via the web. You may be able to get a replacement keyboard relatively cheaply from the company or on eBay. Replacing the keyboard is a relatively easy thing to do if you're handy, but taking apart a laptop can be a tricky thing if you don't have the service manual. If I'm fixing a laptop for someone and I can't get the service manual, I am very sure to make it clear that I can't guarantee that I won't break some hidden plastic fastener.

As for the other noise. It's got to be coming from an unsealed component with moving parts. This narrows it down to the CPU fan, the optical drive, or the floppy drive. My bet would be the CPU fan. The fan may be a separate component, or may be integrated into the CPU cooling unit. Again, you can probably get a replacement part, but this part will probably be considerably more difficult to replace than the keyboard.

If it were my laptop, I'd take it apart to determine the extent of the contamination. Then I'd use distilled water to rinse the gummed up parts. Then I'd make sure to DRY THEM THOROUGHLY before reassembly to see if they are now working. If I couldn't get one or the other part to work, I'd price replacement parts and then decide to fix or replace.
