Late to the GC party

Yeah, yeah. I fell out of console gaming by and large when I felt like the N64 was a huge waste of time and money, and pretty much just got back into it with a Wii.

With that said, I totally missed out on some really awesome games I now have the opportunity to play for the Gamecube, but I know next to nothing about it. I have assembled a minor list based on hype and name dropping of quality titles to look for, but I need some affirmation/recommendations/guidance.

I ask you: What games do you recommend on top of these? Are there any you'd remove? And perhaps most importantly, do you know where I can good deals on these on the cheap? I'm... not a savvy consumer. Trading is good.

Super Monkey Ball 1 +/- 2
Wind Waker
Super Smash Brothers Melee
Metroid Prime 1 +/- 2
Resident Evil 4
Viewtiful Joe
Super Mario Sunshine
Prince of Persia SoT
Donkey Konga 1 +/- 2
Mario Parties?

I already picked up Battalion Wars for $10 on a hint from another thread. Also, recommendations that will be overlapped by possible Wii buys are not so good. ... also, two gamecube controllers, wavebird or otherwise.

That's all. Promise. PM's with prices from trades are encouraged.

If this is even in the right thread?

Search the "Gamecube" forum, and you'll see about a dozen threads asking the same question. If your looking for a specific deal on a game, then it goes here. Hope that helped.
REs, VJs, PoPs, MPs, and MGS are good, along with Eternal Darkness.

Wind Waker, Metroid, Resident Evil 4, and the first Prince of Persia were all really great games. I would add Beyond Good and Evil, Donkey Kong Jungle Beat(with Bongos) and Animal Crossing. As far as accessories go I stay away from Wavebirds because they have no rumle feature and waste batteries unless you get some rechargables. Pick up Zelda Twilight Princess too if you're not planning on getting a Wii. I played the Wii version through and was very pleased with the game, although I think I like Wind Waker a little better.

I think the point the OP made is that he HAS a Wii, but never had a GC, so he wants suggestions for GC games.

I second Paper Mario. Great game.

Eternal Darkness is a classic that a lot of people overlook, definately pick it up (you can find it dirt cheap). Starfox Adventures gets a bad rep but it's a really well done Zelda clone with amazing graphics (especially for a 5 year old game) and can be found for $10. Timesplitters 2 and Timesplitters: Future Perfect are great FPS games that can be found cheap (they were done by former members of the Goldeneye/Perfect Dark N64 teams at Rare). Sonic Mega Collection is a great way to get all the classic Sonics without waiting and overpaying for them on the Virtual Console. NBA Street Volume 3 is the best NBA Jam-style basketball game ever made (and the Cube version has unlockable Mario characters). Since it's an older sports game it can be found cheap. Soul Calibur 2 is an amazing fighting game and the Cube version has Link as a playable character; it can be found for 10 bucks at Gamestop. Beach Spikers was an amazing volleyball game put out by Sega for Cube 4 years ago; it used to be dirt cheap but I haven't seen it on shelves in a long time. Mega Man Network Transmission was a quality original Cube Mega Man game based on the GBA titles but with traditional Mega Man Gameplay; it can be found for under $10 as well. Mega Man Anniversary Collection and Mega Man X Collection are also great values on Cube (and much cheaper than the individual games would cost you if they ever appeared on the Virtual Console). Until January 31st you can get the Cube version of Gun (a quality western action game) for $5 with the Toys R Us $5 off coupon. I hope that helps to get you started!

FYI: get a Wavebird. They're actually incredibly efficient on batteries, and as I don't care about the rumble feature, probably the second-best wireless controller ever made (the Wiimote being #1).

Also, games:

Tales of Symphonia
Baten Kaitos 1 & 2
Batallion Wars
Beyond Good & Evil

also if you do not have a dreamcast get skies of arcadia: Legends. That is a great game but like many Atlus games, it was put out of production even though it was amazing so you will not be able to find it dirt cheap maybe like 30-40 20s if your lucky.

Atlus never touched this game, it's made by Sega.

I'll third Tales of Symphonia and Second Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes. I'll also mention that, if you enjoy Star Wars games, Rogue Leader and Rebel Strike were enjoyable for me. Resident Evil 4 is a good choice, but also don't miss the REmake and Resident Evil Zero, because they're system exclusives. And REmake is still gorgeous. Oh yeah, and get both Metroid Primes.

I wouldn't call the Gamecube a party but there's a few really good games on it. Get Metroid Prime and Eternal Darkness, they're both extremely cheap, you can probably get both for under $10 combined. Skies of Arcadia Legends is a great RPG, definitely worth grabbing. I'm not a big fan of the Mario sports games, but Mario Kart is a great multiplayer game although the single player is pretty simple. F-Zero GX is pretty cheap and solid as well. I have yet to get MGS or Wind Waker, but I want to and you should too.

The Timesplitters games are awesome, but I have them for PS2 so I'm not sure how well they would work on the Cube.
Wait wait wait, you thought the N64 was a huge waste of time and money, so you got a GAMECUBE?! Uh, ok then.
I thought he said he bought a Wii and was using it to play Gamecube games. Nothing wrong with that.

Resident Evil 4, Metroid Prime, Wind Waker and Pikmin are essentials, IMO. Also, you should probably just find someone to kick you in the balls as hard as they can - repeatedly and often - instead of buying Starfox Adventures and Wario's World. It's way more fun.

I was just going to mention Ikaruga.... but now that I think of it, it may melt his face!

F-Zero
Mario Kart
Metroid Prime.... Echoes if you like the first
Skies of Arcadia, if you can find it
Soul Calibur 2* especially if you are a Zelda nut
Super Smash Bros Melee
Resident Evil 0 and 4
Cubivore.... quirky but SOOO much fun
Pikmin 1 and 2 if you like slow mental treks in your RTS's, great games!
Alien Hominid,... unless you're getting a 360

Games to stay away from, cause I'm prejudice.

Megaman Anniversary Collection..... the controls will make you insert your Wiimote up your @ss

PN03.... you might as well shoot yourself, archaic controls that feel like 1989, think Virtua Fighter on the Genesis, with a gun :(

That's pretty much it. :)

Super Monkey Balls 1 and 2 are amazing.
Pikmin 1 is great while 2 was lacking.
Mario Party 4 and 5 were good, but 6 and 7 were pretty bad.
Mario Baseball was excellent.
Star Fox Adventures was great imo even though a lot of people disliked it.
Paper Mario: TYD was great.
Resident Evil 4 is a must have.

I also think the Wavebirds were fantastic.

A bit late but i recommend:

1) Resident Evil 4
2) Zelda Twilight Princess
3) Zelda Wind Waker
4) Eternal Darkness

Those are "must-haves" if you own a GC

Oh yeah;
5) Metal Gear Solid: Twin Snakes (if you've never played the PSX version)

If you don't have an XBox or PS2, both SNK vs. Capcom 2 and Pinball Hall of Fame are decent titles that don't get a lot of pub.

Does anyone else think there should be a "New Gamecube Owners" wiki page? It could have a brief discussion of things a Wii/Gamcube owner should know, along with recommended/necessary peripherals and lists of the must-have, pretty good, and mediocre games. Maybe it could include spotlights on the multiplatform games that were either best on the GC (I know, not many) or ones that were exclusive to the GC?

That way, we could just post a link for each of these threads that pop up and be done with it, and obsessive Gamecube owners wouldn't need to keep reading every post like this thinking there's some gem in the Gamecube library they missed.

Just a thought.

Sounds like a good idea.
