LCD TV Recommendations

qlos

CAGiversary!
I'm in the market for a 52 inch LCD TV.

Plan on using it mostly for gaming and watching sports.

Any recommendations? I'm leaning towards Sharp (LC52D64U) but Sony and Samsung make comparable models.

Any help is appreciated.

Well those 3 are probably the best :p. I got a Sharp after hearing how great they are and it's nice. I wouldn't go for the Sony unless you have extra money since it will probably cost more than it's worth compared to the Samsung and Sharp.

Sharp will probably be the cheapest of the 3, but Samsung won't be too much more expensive than that, so if price is an issue I'd see which out of a Samsung and Sharp has the features that you're looking for.

sony's new xbr4 lcd series blow every other lcd out of the water and come the closest to having a plasma tv picture quality (not quite as good as plasma but close), but they are also the most expensive (rightfully so)

a lot of the large sharp tv's had some major issues like banding i believe (check avsforums.com or cnet.com and you'll see)

I own a sony bravia. I love it. I got it on an open box, someone had taken it back because they couldn't afford it or something. Got knocked down from 999 to 460! Its clear, great sound, and just the right amount of inputs for my old systems and the new!

I have the Samsung 5265f and it is absolutely stunning. Whatever model you get, I can't recommend Amazon enough. I got my lcd back in June for $2925 shipped with no tax, about $950 less than Best Buy/Circuit City/Sears at the time. You can get my exact model for around $2450 now; they've also released a 5271 in the meantime which I believe has a slightly higher refresh rate, but that's about it.

thats what i dont get, if plasmas are really better than LCD's, why are people in the market for lcd's? burn in and stuff is very rare nowadays so i dont see how someone can be devoted to finding an lcd.

generally there's 3 other benefits, lcd's usually have less glare (though some new ones from sammy among others have a shiny screen that is worse than plasma's glass with anti-glare, etc), usually weigh less (though same situation, the lcd's, specifically larger ones and the one's with shiny screens just about the same or maybe more depending on the model), and consume less power

other facts are lcd's are easier to get a higher resolution out of, so you see models with 1080p for less than a good plasma with 1080p would cost, and also that they come in a bigger variation of sizes

if you want a 40-60" tv, plasma offers the best PQ still, but there is so many myths, plus lcd's look better in showrooms since their brightness is cranked, but take a top plasma and top lcd home and the plasma will win out in a regularly lit room (as opposed to a warehouse type setting in a store with numerous flourescent lights)

trust me they both have their own issues, which is why there isn't a clear dominator or only one HDTV type of picture right now...

I own a 50" Plasma and a 42" LCD and the quality and brightness with LCD is way better than the Plasma by far. I see the Plasma as the VHS and the LCD as the DVD it's the new model.

you are out of your mind, you have to be comparing a crappy plasma to a decent or good LCD, because on par (make, model, features, etc) the PQ of plasma's is better (say taking the best against the best, aka Pioneer vs Sony, or even the second tier Panasonic vs Sammy)

in fact brightness is one thing that LCD's have going against it, they wash out dark scenes, detail is lost and the images are way to bright, even the high-end LED backlighted Sammy 81 series with local dimming hasnt solved that issue (and in fact washes out scenes by making them to dark, LCD hasn't found a middle ground and probably wont because by then a new technology that is affordable will make LCD's and Plasma's obsolete)

Don't forget to get a lcd tv that has QAM tuner built-in. You get free basic cable and hd channels, that is if you have cable internet service.
