Les Stroud vs. Bear Grylls

Magehart

CAGiversary!
Which one do you think is better on their shows? I Personally have to go with Les. Doing all that without having people to talk to AND carrying around a bitch load of equipment has to take a lot of physical skill. Don't get me wrong, if I could choose one thing to bring with me on a deserted island Bear Grylls would be a damn fine choice. He's like the Macgyver of nature. But when it comes down to it I think Les Stroud just edges out Bear.

I prefer Les as well. Although, I've warmed up to Bear.

At first I hated Bear, just because it just seemed random and a little more extreme and dangerous. Like, the stupid kind of dangerous. But once I started thinking about what Bear does is supposed to be life or death/extreme emergency situations, as opposed to Les' surviving, I found it much more enjoyable than I did before. I just think of it as, if you HAD to scale down a waterfall in 10 minutes as opposed to finding a safe way, then I guess it's ok to watch.

The other thing about Bear and Man vs. Wild is that I've noticed that he seems to conveniently find things. For example, he was in the mountains and came up to a huge ravine and needed to get to the other side. And then conveniently he found three ropes attached to a tree that went all the way across the ravine to the other side. And in the desert island one, he conveniently gets rescued after three days at sea.

One thing I like about Les is that he tries out a different, "survival tool," on each show so that you can see if it actually works.

No question .. Bear Grylls. He's the man. And as I said before, he could hunt down and kill Rambo with his bare hands and then finish that up with a cup of tea.

Les hands dowm. Les goes in alone so he if something bad would happen he would die. Also on Survivorman Les says the hardest part of surviving is being alone.

Bear isn't alone like he has said. but he has more then one person with him. In the Africa show when they're near the elephants he says "hang back guys.". Plus I wouldn't doubt if the camera people help Bear out.

I don't think so, I think his camera crew would make to much news. IIRC a normal camera crew is two camera men, audio guy, lighting guy, producer and a fixer.

Now Les would make a trap that Rambo would never see and catch him that way.

I think every time I watch Survivorman in the back of my mind I'm always wondering if he'll die or get seriously injured or something.

Technically, Bear says that his camera crew isn't allowed to talk or help him out in any way...unless it's a life or death emergency. I'm not 100% sold on that. For instance when he heard a noise in the jungle and though it might be a bear. It was the middle of the night, he was running his ass off and the camera crew had all their lights to shine the way.

If Les were in the same situation he'd either wait it out, or run his ass off by himself. Then have to retrace all of his steps to pick up the camera he set up. :)

exactly I just checked out Les's site and he says new season starts in late February.

Les Stroud.
He's all by himself, and he has to carry all the camera equipment on his own. He has to be more cautious, since if he screws up, he's stranded. Bear seems too careless at times, but he can get away with it, since he has back-up. Plus, Bear kills too many animals, while Les rarely does. Les is really environmental, and seems to care more about what he's doing.

Exactly. I always thought Steve Irwin was careless at what he did.

Sweeeeet.

Not sure if I'm confusing it with another show, but Bear did have a guide with him and the camera crew carrying around a gun on the rainforest show. The crew even came on camera after Bear had heard the weird noises at night and they shared stories about how well the crew slept and what they had just had for breakfast.

That said, I like seeing the more extreme cases that Bear does. I enjoy his show, if not for the fact, that he'll just try out crazy ass things that you know he doesn't have to do just for TVs sake. Take for instance, drinking the water from elephant dung or jumping into freezing cold water just to show us how to survive that.

Both great shows, though.

I don't remember that in the initial broadcast. However that sounds familiar. I haven't seen it, but I think I heard them say something about, "After the show listen to the crew...blah blah blah...just go online at discovery.com"

I wonder if they just integrated the extras in the episode now.
Does Bear have his own folk-rock CD? Yeah, I didn't think so. Les Stroud wins.

That sums it all up right there.

The other day I watched a few more episodes of Survivorman... you really get a feel for how Les feels when you hear him start bitching about HAVING to film himself and how hard it is on him. At first you think "he hates his job" but when you really think about it... that dude has balls. The only thing he ever carries the average person might not have is his multi-tool. But some of the other shit he had and tried is amazing. I'm almost 100% sure nothing he's tried is stage (like lighting a fire for airplane fuel and a battery). Or breaking apart the camera for the fibers/paper in it was tech too.

I think Bear would give him a little more of a run for his money if he didn't have his camera crew because everyone knows psychologically a week alone is the worst thing ever. Plus Bear never does a full week, it's always a few days.

Steve Irwin? Or do you mean Bear lol.

(just to stay on the quote) Steve Irwin was a genius and probably one of the worlds best humanitarians. The guy really never did anything wrong or bad.
